What do you think about this quote to fit my Howdens kitchen.

ihatethecold · 28/02/2018 14:21

It’s a medium size kitchen from howdens. Approx 11 units. It’s doesn’t include the worktop fitting. No island.

£4.2K plus vat.

This includes removing the current kitchen which is smaller.

I think it’s very expensive. It’s the builder that is doing other building work for us.
This quote does not include extra electric points, lights or fitting any flooring.

Nope. The world is full of kitchen places and kitchen fitters.
Shop around.

xyzandabc · 28/02/2018 16:16

That is very high. We paid 3k Inc VAT. That was fitting about 20 units, and worktops and taking out the old kitchen. Also we moved some electrics about so included that too. Was meant to take 2 men 2 weeks but they were done in about 6 days and did a fab job.

PoofShazam · 28/02/2018 17:21

Married to a kitchen fitter - his response to your quote was "how fucking big is the kitchen?!" Confused

DH charges around £1500-£2000 for two men to take 5 days and he says they'd get yours done well within that. This would include fitting worktops and any appliances, he's even been known to include the tiling/splash backs if they can do it within the 5 days.

He said your builder will be contracting the work out to a joiner who is probably only charging around £2k and your builder has added extra on for himself, hence his reluctance to give you a breakdown of your costs.

QuitMoaning · 28/02/2018 17:50

Just had a bespoke kitchen and utility room fitted. I think it was 28 units in all including an island. There was no old kitchen to remove and it didn’t include worktops or splash backs but it did include plumbing and basic electrics (we had electrician for advanced stuff)

Took one fitter a total of 11 days including snagging and plinths.

£2,700.

QuitMoaning · 28/02/2018 17:51

Just to clarify, that was fitting costs, not supplying anything, (that was paid separately)

ihatethecold · 28/02/2018 18:31

Thanks.
We have emailed the builder to ask for a breakdown of the costs regarding the kitchen.
We have said we are surprised at how high he has costed it.
I have also asked a friend to get a quote from her DH who fits kitchens.

have you committed? Sounds expensive

ihatethecold · 28/02/2018 18:42

To him doing the building work? Yes pretty much but we can find someone else to fit the kitchen if we are not happy with the quote.

OP posts:
Flomy · 28/02/2018 18:46

Tell him you cant afford any of it. I reckon you could save at least 50%.

TheInvisiblePieceofShit · 28/02/2018 18:52

Im paying my kitchen fitter £120 per day.

He's doing pretty much everything. Im moving electrics and running, ceiling is coming down, moving a doorway, havibg understates cupboard fitted with electricity and shelving for pantry use and he says 3 weeks tops so £1800 all in. Im doing my own painting and I need to pay a man he knows to cut my worktop but Hes providing electricity certs the lot.

Yours sounds v v v expensive.

TheInvisiblePieceofShit · 28/02/2018 18:55
  • plumbing not running
Aw12345 · 28/02/2018 19:00

Sounds like a rip off to me! Also don't think Howdens are the best quality... We went to diykitchens.com and then got a local kitchen fitter...saved us a bomb and units much better quality :-)

SheSellSeaShells · 28/02/2018 19:06

blimey that's a huge quote .... Also I second diykitchens.... my kitchen is bloody lush from there and we paid a local to fit it too. Way cheaper than Howdens, Wicks and others we looked at... and top quality too.

ihatethecold · 28/02/2018 21:38

I did visit DIY kitchens and yes they are great kitchens but if I’m honest I need an easy life at the moment.
Life has been very stressful and the thought of being responsible for the kitchen being completely right in terms of measurements etc is too much for me.
My diy kitchen quote isn’t much different to Howdens.

£5K to fit a boiler.

Please tell me you haven't paid that. Ours cost £1400 (inc VAT) which involved disconnecting a 1950's floor standing version.

PurpleTraitor · 28/02/2018 21:50

We paid £4,800 for our kitchen. That’s all we spent on the entire project and it was completely gutted.

Small to medium sized kitchen. Eight short units, two tall units, two wall units and a kitchen island with power.
Removal of old kitchen. Redo of electrics, moving some plugs and creating two new sockets. Plumbing for dishwasher. Plumbing for fridge.
New oven, new job, new fridge freezer and new extractor fan.
Under unit lights and new ceiling light.
Splash backs and worktops, fitted.
Flooring, edgings and kick boards, fitted.
New blinds for windows.
New internal door and windowsills.
Plastering of a newly exposed area.
Cost of paint.

The only thing we did ourselves was paint it.

mummyhaschangedhername · 28/02/2018 21:52

What is he doing to the boiler to cost that much? If it's pretty much a straight swap then that's way too high.

Kitchen fitting price is extremely high.

Houseworkavoider · 28/02/2018 21:53

It would be around 2k here (Cornwall).

ihatethecold · 28/02/2018 22:06

The boiler is being replaced and moved 6 feet to the left
Also re siting the oil tank from back to front.
We haven’t paid yet and have asked for a breakdown of the 5k quote.

senua · 28/02/2018 23:13

You are aware of the concept of the "I don't want to do this job, I'll price it so high that they will go elsewhere" quote?

ihatethecold · 01/03/2018 06:48

I am aware and that has happened with a couple of quotes we got for the project.
This builder has quoted all the other work at a price we find to be acceptable.
The whole project is approx 85k to 95k.
This is the first part we have seriously questioned.

OP posts:
another20 · 01/03/2018 11:14

Is the project already in progress? - if he is quoting as he goes along - has he has you by the short and curlies - as you need your boiler and kitchen fitted soon ie not able seek quotes and wait?

Get other quotes - present them to him and ask him to re-quote if he wants the work......or just go with someone else.

We moved the position of our boiler by 8ft also.

another20 · 01/03/2018 11:14

They are both easy stand alone projects to quote for.

PETRONELLAS · 01/03/2018 11:19

That’s too much. Howdens cabinets are already made up so not even flat packed, which must reduce the time to fit them. I felt everything was ‘£5K’ when our building work was done. It’s too much even if includes tiling and plastering and flooring.
