Anyone got a Nest or Hive thermostat, or an alternative?

I'd like a more controllable thermostat than I currently have, but finding it hard to differentiate between them all online.

I'm relatively worried about the online security aspect so would welcome info on if one is better than the other security wise as well as general functionality.

Thanks in advance!

We have a wave which is a Worcester Bosch one. It is ok. I like being able to turn it on and off remotely

Thanks fats that is super helpful in general but also the hack ability question. Really appreciate it!

Hackability was my main security concern Smile

What does 'more controllable' mean? are you just looking to be able to turn on/off your boiler from a smartphone?

I have a Drayton Wiser system and would thoroughly recommend it. We have a lot of radiators in the house, and the Drayton system includes relatively inexpensive TRVs (~£40 from screwfix) which means we can control each room independently.

I would definitely install another if ever I moved.

Here is an article about hacking the wave blog.rtwilson.com/hacking-the-worcester-wave-thermostat-in-python-part-1/

It made me laugh. Phoning up the company to ask for an api. He is hacking away and not getting very far. I think you are right to worry about the internet of things but in a domestic setting the risk is fairly low for these gadgets.

We’ve got a Nest and we’re really happy with it. We chose that over the Hive as we’ve got the combined smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and, if CO is detected, the boiler shuts down. Hive doesn’t do this (or didn’t at the time) and it was quite important to us.

We have a Tado, love the geofencing so it turns the heating on as it sees you coming home.

4yearsnosleep · 04/03/2018 02:01

I'm fairly sure that the Nest can handle different zones of heating. Can anyone confirm this at all please?

We we will have 3 zones, one for underfloor heating in the extension, one for radiators and one for the rest of the house. Is this possible with Nest?

Thank you

We chose the nest as it was bought by google a couple of years ago for a few billion pounds. We thought that google are in the know with the latest technology, new ideas etc (and the control is better looking!).

We’ve got Nest. Not just the thermostat but the cameras, smoke alarms etc. It’s a great system. It also integrates well with Alexa, Phillips Hue etc. It’s pricey but worth the money.

We had Hive in our previous home. It’s good too but I prefer Nest as an overall system.

It doesn’t work with Siri though, in case that’s a problem for you.

DH late to the party has just started banging on about Hive yesterday. We have two teenage DC who move frequently about the house from room to roomwith IPADS and phones. I am very sceptical as DH has the instruction booklet for the heating timer hidden it takes me two months of reminding to adjust the timing of the heating after the clocks have changed (so nearly always have to manually put it in when I’m cold but I am generally overly hot rather than cold) and he works very long hours so if we are all reliant on him setting things up from his mobile we will be snookered? We don’t have u dergloor heating the boiler is about 5 years old so I am struggling to see the benefits.

vegascouple · 26/11/2018 10:32

It's easy, you have the app on both of your phones and the thermostat can be manually changed in house also, I'll attach a picture of ours right now.
The app that is, I'm no tech wizards and even I can easily do this.
Atm me and DH are in a HIVE war, I turn it up and he turns it down 😂 all from the comfort of our phones while he's at work and I'm in the house.

Anyone got a Nest or Hive thermostat, or an alternative?
Amazonian27 · 26/11/2018 11:07

Thanks Vegas couple but is it not easier just to put on as your passing the hallway manually??
If i’m At home if I am cleaning it have just got back I am not cold but if I sit a little while on days like today I am bloody freezing so don’t want DH messing with the heating from the comfort of his small modern cosy office.
I would rather spend the money getting the house painted. I feel guilty asking for a Christmas present as money fairly tight so this seems like an unnecessary extra at this time other than the novelty value of another app?? Or am I missing something or is gadget man?

AgathaF · 26/11/2018 11:10

We have Tado too. Easy to use, and great that it turns the heating on when it knows you are nearly home.

WardrobeDoor · 26/11/2018 14:33

We got our Hive installed today. Bought it last week with the £100 off Black Friday deal. It is so so simple to use and nice to sort out fro. The sofa rather than at the controller in the kitchen. I’ve set different temperatures for different times and days. And can still set by twiddling the knob as I walk past in the hallway.

I don’t think anyone actually needs it but it is undoubtedly easier to use

Amazonian27 · 26/11/2018 15:03

Thanks I think it will still be a no from me then as it doesn’t offer that much. We have a dog so rarely go away much. I will start by again asking him to adjust the times of the current controller tonight since the clocks changed rather than waste time researching Hive etc.

sdaisy26 · 26/11/2018 20:12

@Amazonian27 I was sceptical but we just got a hive (dh installed it himself the other day). It’s amazing! We had an ok-ish but not that brilliant thermostat before but with this I can lie in bed and ask Alexa to change the temperature. It’s so much more controllable than anything we’ve had before.

user1484400574 · 26/11/2018 20:22

We have Hive with lights set to it also. Were away on holiday in Tenerife last week and could remotely check the temp of the house when away as we put the heating off. On the morning of the day we returned, we remotely put on the heating for us coming back to a warm home. The lights are timed to come on when darkness falls and go off in the morning.
Never had a problem been installed for over a year now.

Amazonian27 · 26/11/2018 20:27

sdaisy26 & user those examples found good.
