Anyone got a Nest or Hive thermostat, or an alternative?

I'd like a more controllable thermostat than I currently have, but finding it hard to differentiate between them all online.

I'm relatively worried about the online security aspect so would welcome info on if one is better than the other security wise as well as general functionality.

Thanks in advance!

I've got a hive one and it's great! I love that I can control the temperature from home! Especially during the cold weather. Today I was able to see that the house was 11C, so I set it to 15 through the day so my cat wouldn't get too cold.
Give also has a boost function so you can turn on the heating for half an hour, just to warm up a little. It was useful when my friend was working from my house one day and couldn't work out how to use the thermostat. I just did it for her.
Can't advise on security though :/

I have a Nest, I love it! I can control it from my phone but it also knows when I'm away from home & turns the heating down but senses movement in the house if I'm away & DH is home.

Security wise I'm not sure tbh. I'm pretty glued up on that side of things, my WiFi is secure etc but I'm not sure what anyone could do with a Nest? Happy to be educated?

As far as I know it talks to the boiler & that's it.

We have a hive. It’s brilliant.

Crumbelina · 28/02/2018 07:24

Love, love, love my Nest! We have one at the moment but are planning to have 3 when we complete the house renovation. Bit extravagant but it'll save us money in the long run.

OctoberOctober · 28/02/2018 07:51

Looking to get something similar when renovations complete. Leaning towards Nest at the moment. Presume you need a separate one for each zone?

mommybear1 · 28/02/2018 09:58

We had HIVE in the old house absolutely loved it. We have had a new heating system now and have a Honeywell Comfort system it's clever but it's no HIVE in my opinion Shock

BeatlesJuice · 28/02/2018 09:59

We've been advised to have Evohome although I'm not sure about the relative merits over Hive or Nest. How much did it cost you? We've been quoted roughly £50 per radiator for the thermostat, £200 for the controller thing plus fitting. It's not zoned per se if I understand correctly but each radiator can be controlled individually so you have more control over each room.

Rufffles · 28/02/2018 10:01

Have a look at Netatmo. Less well known as Nest or Hive, but the same idea. Their app for iPhone is incredibly user friendly. Absolutely loved it in our old flat but we left it there when we moved last year :(

ShastaBeast · 28/02/2018 10:04

Hive here and it’s great. It’s stopped working a couple of times and the helpline has been very good at resolving any issues. All minor and quickly fixed. We have Next at work but it has to be wired in compared to the Hive with batteries that last ages, this means you can take it to different rooms depending where you are. We have a couple of light bulbs too.

Crumbelina · 28/02/2018 10:08

We're going to have one zone in the large kitchen extension (as it has underfloor heating), one for the rest of the downstairs and one for upstairs. I think we'll spend most of our time in the kitchen so I don't need other rooms to be heated unnecessarily.

I have a Nest and I HATE it. I want to turn my heating on and leave it on but it gets to temperature and turns itself off again while telling me it's hot enough. I'll be the judge of that thanks Hmm

Doik · 28/02/2018 11:24

We have a Cosy which was free when we changed energy supplier. I really like it but I don't think it's advanced as some of the others and I probably wouldn't pay what they're asking for it.

Feezles · 28/02/2018 11:37

We love our Hive! We picked it over Nest because, at the time we bought it, Hive let you control hot water but Nest didn't, and we valued that over the better automated learning that Nest has. That was 4 years ago now, though - so that might have all changed.

We have never had any issues with our Hive, it has always been great, and I love that it integrates with our Alexa too, so we can do voice control. They have also expanded into things like sockets and light bulbs, so we can control those via the App and via Alexa too. Love it!

We love our Nest and have the smoke alarms and home security camera too which are also great.

RaspberryPi1 · 28/02/2018 19:11

Tado. Based on your location, so shuts down automatically when you leave, and heats up when you are on your way home.

Great multi room thermostats

StarsBrokenAgain · 28/02/2018 19:13

Ooooh it's looking quite equal on the Nest vs. Hive. Hmmm.

Happy to see the alternatives as well - thanks!

Keep coming with any why either are better...

The security aspect - I just meant how hackable everything is. An escalating concern...

We have HIVE, along with several other HIVE features like the lightbulbs. Can't recommend it enough, when we moved we had it all installed again as we missed it.

Fletch80 · 28/02/2018 20:48

We have HIVE. The only problem we've had was fixed with a quick call (they can talk you through a re-set over the phone). We use it for heating, water, sockets, lights and security. Sockets is handy for re-charging phones and iPads etc, set the socket to switch off after two hours or whatever.
We have the security sensors on exterior doors so if we are away and someone opened one of the doors we would get a text message, we also have a HIVE camera in one room to keep an eye on the dog if we're out. In the same room we have the lights set to gradually dim/ increase, again for the dog's benefit.

R8SSO · 01/03/2018 08:58

I've gone with the Evohome as none of the others (Hive, Nest) could do what I wanted.

I have 4 radiators upstairs each one an individual zone with unique timers setup for each day plus their own temperature settings. Downstairs I have 4 zone underfloor heating each controlled separately too. Really pleased with it all.

lemontova · 01/03/2018 15:58

We have Nest and partly chose it over Hive because the thermostat dial looked prettier. We've been really happy with it.

fatasapancake · 01/03/2018 18:41

Evo Home here (connected home is DHs (work) speciality - he spent weeks researching and boring me about it :-) )

I love it and we shaved about £25 a month off our heating bills by being able to make very minor adjustments like turning kitchen underfloor heating down by half a degree and setting zones to heat up 15 minutes later.

I have just asked him why Evo Home came out above Nest and Hive and he says it can do more and you can create your own zones where ever you want.

He says that he was considering that we live in a largish draughtyish Victorian house when he chose and that Nest or Hive might be more suitable for a more modern house.

fatasapancake · 01/03/2018 18:43

Also, DH says if you can be more specific about the security concerns you have, he will try to give a more specific answer.

fatasapancake · 01/03/2018 18:53

On hackability, the majority of products that have been hacked connect to the internet in an insecure way. Hive and Eco Home only connect back to a known good secure location and you 'talk' to them via that. He assumes that Nest is the same but doesn't know for definite.
