What would the original flooring look like in a 1920s or 1930s house?

Looking online, I can see a lot of black and white but I think that's more Victorian? I still like the black and white but I'm wondering what would have been more likely. Has anyone got their original floor still?

Tor's hallway is a similar width to ours and I've got a 1930s semi.

Tors33 · 25/02/2018 20:19

My hallway is very narrow the front bay window had to be taken out to get sofa and chairs in

I grew up in a naice 1930s detached - it had lovely parquet hall, quarry tiles in porch and kitchen. Receptions & bedrooms were floorboards and I think always carpeted, though at least one had boats dark painted round edges, so maybe large rug (or maybe the carpet fitting was just not so good round the edges back then??)

Oak floorboards in most rooms, quarry tiles (yellow and terracotta patchwork) in kitchen and mosaic in the porch and first small hallway.

My 1930 house is very modest and lacked any decorative features from the moment it was built (no lovely bay windows or anything). It has terracotta tiles in the entrance, then basic wooden floorboards that I guess would have been covered with lino. I think beautiful parquet and tiles are probably a feature of naicer period homes.

Just asked my mum and she said my house was built in the late 1800s so tht wld be victorian wouldn't it

PigletJohn · 25/02/2018 20:31

this is a Terazzo hall floor in a 1905 Edwardian house of somewhat grander style. The kitchen, scullery, pantry, downstairs WC and under-stairs cupboard were also floored with Terazzo, but without the fancy pattern, just an indigo border.

Tors, yes, Victorian and a stunning floor. Very lucky!

Alabasterangel6 · 25/02/2018 20:39

Those beautiful floor tiles are Minton tiles, just in case anyone wants to know!

Very common at that time to creosote the edges of the floorboards in black and have a central rug.

Tors33 · 25/02/2018 20:39

Pigletjohn that is a lovely floor

whoareyoukidding · 25/02/2018 20:50

I'm also fond of old-fashioned small-tiled front paths that you see on older properties.

WazFlimFlam · 25/02/2018 20:53

Tors, that is Victorian

PigletJohn · 25/02/2018 21:13

Tors

Seeing it reminded me I had last seen it when a tiny tot. The house had a makeover in the 1920's when electricity went in, and some of the original features were replaced in Art Deco style, AFAIK then it had been carpeted and not seen the light of day (except during carpet replacement) for the best part of a hundred years.

I sloshed a wet mop over it to brighten the colours for the photo, as it had not been polished.

MrsSchadenfreude · 25/02/2018 21:19

1923 here, and parquet throughout.

borntobequiet · 25/02/2018 21:27

Those are beautiful tiles. What other features remain?
Don't let your DP loose on any of it.

borntobequiet · 25/02/2018 21:32

Sorry, that was for Tors.

SwedishEdith · 25/02/2018 21:32

Lovely floor Piglet.

And serious Envy - again - at parquet throughout.

I love a tiled pathway as well but we don't have a gate directly in front of our front door so can't do that.

I'm in a 1930s semi. The porch is black and white tiles in a pattern and the hallway is narrow oak floorboards, about 1/3 the width of standard floorboards. Each house in the road is different. I think the purchaser could choose. Some have patterned tiles (which I'm jealous of) some plain red quarry tiles and some floorboards.

emsyj37 · 25/02/2018 21:41

Our last house was a modest 30s semi and that was parquet all through the downstairs - current (and 'forever' house) is detached, built 1935 and parquet throughout aside from quarry tiled porch. Kitchen has been extended and so no longer has the original floor, altho the previous owners have done quite well at keeping as much of the original stuff as possible (front door, windows, skirting etc).
Fitting parquet is so expensive now tho.
Would love a Minton tiled hall. We don't plan to move again so I will probably never get one, but they are my favourite style of hall.

ShowOfHands · 25/02/2018 21:45

I live in a 30s semi. We have quarry tiles in the hall and would have been oak floorboards with obligatory tar outer and rug in the middle except there's vile pink 70s carpet on top of the boards. Matches the woodchip paper and peach corner bath a treat. We're slowly ripping out the horrid stuff.

Thinkingofausername1 · 25/02/2018 21:47

What stunning floors everyone! I want a 1930's house GrinSmile

namechangedtoday15 · 25/02/2018 23:08

Tors, beautiful floor.

1930s here. Red quarry tiles in kitchen which were beautiful but someone had stuck limo to them and despite our best efforts (and professionals!) we wouldn't remove limo residue and had to replace Sad

namechangedtoday15 · 25/02/2018 23:09

Lino!!

PickledLilly · 25/02/2018 23:18

I live in a 1930s semi and it’s bog standard badly fitted floorboards throughout. I’m very jealous of all these lovely floors!

Clankboing · 25/02/2018 23:29

I have a 1930s house. It has original parquet flooring downstairs.
