Best carpet colour for stairs and bedrooms?

It’s currently cream. ON the stairs and floorboards in bedrooms which are cold, noisy and LEGO falls down the gaps. Stair carpet is totally filthy and minging after 7 years, two kids, dogs cats, messy husband etc. So it needs to be dark enough to not suffer the same fate

I’m not an embracer of grey. Each bedroom is a differing shade of blue.

I’ve looked and looked but the only carpet I’ve really liked is a massively impractical herringbone flatweave that is slippery and delicate

Do most people have the same carpet throughout? What colour apart from grey and cream is The Thing?

We had a Heather purple in our hall and stairs and it still looks great after 7 years. Used grey/brown in the living room with subtle flecks in and it doesn't show any marks up. I think it was called tortoiseshell.

I love the plaid styles just now, subtle and like a previous poster said not like kilts. I would go for something like this for stairs and upper hallway but a plain neutral for bedrooms. Have attached one of my current favourite plaids.

Brilliant ideas. Thanks all. I need to
So some proper thinking, but you’ve given me something to think about.

I definitely lean towards flat rather than tufty but appreciate that props comes with its own issues. I’m just not used to carpet. This is our first home and we’ve not had any before except on the stairs and landings

And as such budget is unknown. I’ve no idea if itlll cost £100, £1000 or £10000. Whole new world

If you don’t have straight walls, carpets with plaid or stripes can look wonky.

@Hithere1981 Bought summer 2008 ago from Allied Carpets. The invoice says "Natura Berber - Sand". Because of our Floors (concrete) we went for heavy duty underlay and good thick carpets and have not regretted it. And the mixed nature or the colour is really something I can recommend!

GlowWine · 18/02/2018 13:48

That should of course be Natural Berber

In our house, it would have to be a gritty dark pinkish brown so that the cat sick didn’t show. Dining room shade would be called “Dropped Takeaway.”

Bleachable polypropylene all the way. It holds up so well. We have just put it in living room + kids' rooms in a pale mushroomy colour.

We have stripes on our stairs & landings (put in by previous owners). I love it & carpet fitter admired when fitting new carpets but also said he doesn't do any stripes any more, it's all grey. But I had grey in last house (ahead of the trend, put in 8 years ago!) & they were a pain, marks really showed up (especially baby sick which was phase we were in at time).
