Best carpet colour for stairs and bedrooms?

It’s currently cream. ON the stairs and floorboards in bedrooms which are cold, noisy and LEGO falls down the gaps. Stair carpet is totally filthy and minging after 7 years, two kids, dogs cats, messy husband etc. So it needs to be dark enough to not suffer the same fate

I’m not an embracer of grey. Each bedroom is a differing shade of blue.

I’ve looked and looked but the only carpet I’ve really liked is a massively impractical herringbone flatweave that is slippery and delicate

Do most people have the same carpet throughout? What colour apart from grey and cream is The Thing?

No.
I have one colour on the stairs, landing, 2nd stairs and top landing, but each bedroom has its own different carpet.
Mine is beige. Too easily marked though. I'd have preferred something that wasn't plain but there isn't much choice in the price I was prepared to pay.

It probably won’t be your “thing” but I have a dark brown (a very restful dark chocolate colour) on the landing and in two bedrooms. Other bedrooms are floorboards. It is a really versatile colour. In one room the walls are pale blue and in the other they are a greyish neutral. The rooms have good light but there is absolutely no problems with the carpets. I think they look stylish, especially with crisp white bed linen and white woodwork. I’ve done pale carpets - but not any longer!

Try Alternative Carpets for darker colours that are natural. My carpet has a cut velvet finish. Be careful about the stair carpet because a slippery one will be dangerous.

I was going to say warm brown. Mushroom. That sort of thing.

Pythone · 16/02/2018 07:04

How about a low-pile herringbone? I'm looking at this one to replace our cream stairs and hall carpet which has similar dog-related issues!

I'll be watching this thread as I have the same requirements - no grey!

NC4Now · 16/02/2018 07:07

What about a beige textured carpet?
Or stripes? Are they a bit overdone now?

Addy2 · 16/02/2018 07:16

Our stair carpet is brown. Very muck and stain resistant.

LadyB49 · 16/02/2018 07:22

Mine's a warm mushroom with texture.. It's on the stairs and ¡two of the bedrooms. Been down 15 years and still good.

Motherof3Dragons · 16/02/2018 07:32

Hi,
I love sisal carpets in a natural golden-brown colour for (wooden) stairs and hallways (you can even get them with a herringbone pattern).
I also prefer the same colour tone throughout - it‘s a better visual flow for the layout. I would then use a colourful rug in the kids- bedrooms, as you‘d be able to change that easily. Too many different carpets in a house would irritate me Smile

Tulips2lips · 16/02/2018 10:55

stripes on the stairs/landing!
I like stanton stripe in this collection:

An then plain in the bedrooms.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/02/2018 11:21

One of those mid-shade colours that has slightly different coloured flecks in it - I don't mean the very obviously flecked ones, though those are OK if you like them.

Any completely plain colour is going to show every little bit, and lighter ones will obv. look grubby more quickly.
We had a plain dark one in this house when we moved in and it was a nightmare - showed every tiny little bit and only ever looked really nice when just vacuumed.

Haint · 16/02/2018 12:09

it's so hard isn't it? i don't want dark, as well..it's dark, don't want light as it gets dirty

I has seen a lovey, patterned sisal, but the shop said it doesn't react well to spills and is difficult to spot clean

Actually Tuplis, i do like some of the ones on your link- certainly something to think about

Don't get sisal. It stinks if it gets damp and doesn't clean easily.
I'd go for a more pet coloured carpet or cork flooring.

Bluntness100 · 16/02/2018 14:00

Ok,, this might be a bit of a daft question, but why don't you have someone in to clean it? It's less than fifty quid to have someone come in and do it. All carpets will be filthy if you don't clean them. Buying darker so you can't see the dirt isn't really the ideal solution...Confused

nythbran2 · 16/02/2018 14:06

Bright red! Not so light as to show every mark, not as dreary as brown/grey. Walls and woodwork brilliant white.

WattdeEll · 16/02/2018 21:58

Tartan carpet looks fantastic. There are lots of muted shades around, nothing like Kilts. I have seen one in a heather colour which is just stunning, another in green/blue tones and a beige. Love them all. It moves away from stripes but it still an easy pattern to live with.

Haint · 16/02/2018 22:28

It’s not worth cleaning. It’s very very thin and must’ve been the shittest, cheapest carpet put in just for selling the house. It’s so thin that you can feel the spikey bits on the stairs

We have a vax. It’s pretty good but this carpet is beyond redemption

My mum has a rusty orange on hall stairs and landing. Looks good still after 7or 8 years of mucky Dad and dog.

Or what about a teal kind of colour? Sort of mid blue/green?

We have a stone coloured wool Berber in living room and bedrooms which looks awful but only been down three years. I think they all go manky unless you're very strict about no shoes in the house.

madmother1 · 17/02/2018 08:24

I love my striped stair carpet. It hides all sorts and looks very funky 😊

Bluntness100 · 17/02/2018 08:25

Ah, ok, needs to go then,,,mine are cream and ive a carpet cleaner too, I'm happy to do downstairs, but for some reason hate dragging that sucker up the stairs, might get a dude in.

I'd go for a mushroom/beige colour. But get decent quality and if you have it regularly cleaned should be fine. I like the idea of a tartan one too. Those muted checks look great.

grasspigeons · 17/02/2018 08:29

Mine is a brown basically. I don't love it but it isn't dark enough to show fluff but dark enough that it doesn't look dirty after 2 years. It goes with our blue bedroom and our cream and red lounge.

GlowWine · 17/02/2018 08:55

What's your budget? We went for a thick mixed oatmeal type colour closed pile wool carpet throughout the house, partly also for insulation, and it's held up well even in the high traffic areas ( you have to cross the living room to get to the kitchen). I try to attach a photo with pen for scale. When I chose that 11 years ago they had it in several neutral-ish shades. The mixed colour means I don't have to hoover every day Blush and where there have been spills they've disappeared with a bit of scrubbing.

After years of headaches with wool, I am getting bleachable polypropylene for my stairs!! Probably in grey. Obviously if you buy a twist carpet it will hide more than a flat colour.

whiskyowl · 17/02/2018 09:12

Do not buy sisal or any kind of woven carpet if you have a cat. It is basically a gigantic scratching post. I speak from.bittr experience.
