An a complete novice so bear with me
Moved into a rented property. My landlord has refused to do anything about the backyard but it's in a state . As the pic shows , weeds , moss everywhere , dirty flagging, badly weathered walls etc. Now I don't have a huge amount of money to transform it but really want to make it as nice and as child friendly as possible . I have a budget of around £400 but can stretch to £500 at a push ( I know that isn't much !).
I have 3 dc- 12,11 and 2. The older 2 might want somewhere to sit outside when it's warm and the little one would probably love an outdoor toy or two like maybe a mud kitchen and a slide or a water table .
Where do I start ? I really want to make it clean, attractive and homely .
All suggestions appreciated .
Thanks .

Yay! Please post an 'after' pic Smile

PrimalLass · 18/02/2018 14:50

You'll be amazed at the difference it makes.

Jetwashing will splatter the walls!

Do the flags first, seriously, bleach left on for a while and a stiff brush should shift it, use eye protection, cover all areas of exposed skin and work carefully, neat bleach will burn you and burn through clothes so strictly no kids or pets in the area until it's all done and rinsed away.

moonmaker · 18/02/2018 17:22

Doesn't it look amazing now !!!
Advice needed
He said the walls need a through jetwashing and repointing (because the jetwashing would destabilise the structure and loosen the mud . ) He said the Mould would not fully go off the walls without this procedure but I really can't afford to have this procedure done . Would it be strictly necessary or can I find a cheaper way to remove the Mould to prep it for painting ??

Wow look at the colours!

FellOutOfBed2wice · 18/02/2018 17:57

Blatant placemark to see how this turns out.

wowfudge · 18/02/2018 17:58

Scrub the walls with a stiff brush and a solution of Jeyes Fluid. Rinse everything - using a hose will be easiest and let it dry thoroughly.

trickyex · 18/02/2018 18:00

I would just clean them and make do given you are renting.
Spend the money on things to go in it, table and chairs, solar lights and plants.
See if you can get some kids toys from freecycle etc?

PurpleDaisies · 18/02/2018 18:02

Did nobody else think this was another thread about anal bleaching? Blush

Op it looks absolutely amazing after the jet wash. Am definitely considering getting mine done now. How much did it cost?

Smashpumpkin · 18/02/2018 18:02

Looks fantastic! I can’t get over the difference!

Frouby · 18/02/2018 18:10

That looks so much better!

I had a similar back yard at the old house and like you was renting. I used some of the bamboo screening to cover the manky old walls. B and M and Wilkos are the cheapest places I found. If you can get a couple of lengths of timber and run them horizontally along the wall. I think dp used a hammer and decent sized nails or a hammer drill might be handy.

Then buy a cheap industrial stapler (about a fiver from B and Q) and staple the screening to it top and bottom.

I had hanging baskets up, and loads of pots of flowers. And a little table and chairs. Dd had a few toys out there. A sand pit and a little paddling pool for summer. Try and get a hold of those foam squares for a paddling pool to sit on.

We had loads of lovely evenings and days out there. We eventually did get around to sorting the massive overgrown garden out that was down steps but we still tended to sit in the yard.

The most important thing is that it is clean and safe. Then somewhere to sit and some outside toys. Then your fancy bits like flowers and pots.

Again wilcos and b and m are the cheapest places I have seen for pots. Just be cautious buying huge ones if you are on a budget as they will cost more to fill.

PrimalLass · 18/02/2018 18:16

What a difference!

I agree to just scrubbing/hosing the walls. Spend your money on pots and trellis.

PrimalLass · 18/02/2018 18:19

We have eucalyptus trees and it grows v v fast. You could get a small one now, put it in a massive pot in the corner, and it would put on height quickly but not get unmanageable. Also food for free greenery at Christmas.

MumGoneMild · 18/02/2018 18:20

So much better now Op!

HisBetterHalf · 18/02/2018 18:21

diluted bleach solution will get rid of the green slabs. You could try looking on freecycle for outside toys or gardening stuff (bench, pots etc)

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 18/02/2018 18:24

My.garden was similar and I put down a load of dark green foam tiles that have holes in for drainage, when DS was crawling. They've stayed down as they're nice to walk on, even sit and lounge about on. They were cheap, not hugely pretty but very practical!

Sorry - my phone only showed the first few comments when I posted! Looks great.

moonmaker · 19/02/2018 11:46

I've sprayed some algae and moss killer on the walls, hopefully that will get rid of the green for now

Just got back from local paint shop and purchased a wire brush to get rid of the remaining flakes , some stabilising solution and some magnolia masonry paint ( all suggestions off this fab thread Smile). Might get to painting it next weekend if it's dry!

Anyone here ? The wall ha sharply any green now after a few washes . I've been chipping at itbwith the wire brush but it seems like an endless task as taking some flaky bits off causes non flaky parts to become flaky and I end up taking more off . I've ordered a wire brush drill bit to speed up the process . Don't think we'll be painting it this weekend as it's too cold !

moonmaker · 23/02/2018 13:27

Hardly any green, sorry

I can't wait to see your finished transformation photo! That after shot of the paving is amazing.
