Would you replace this kitchen?

Was watching Selling Houses with Amanda Lamb last night and to my surprise horror saw the same kitchen as mine featuring as needing to be replaced so the house in question would sell

I didn't think my kitchen was that bad, a bit tired maybe and I never really liked the tiles much

I would like to sell my house in about 3-4 years once my dc would be leaving home and thought that I might replace at that time (possibly just the door fronts and worktop/tiles)

I am wondering whether I should do this now so that I can enjoy the new kitchen or whether I should wait so that the kitchen I choose is more modern at the time and probably in better condition

Would be grateful for any opinions on my current kitchen (is it that bad?) and also whether you would look at updating now or in the future

Would you replace this kitchen?

It's hideous, I'd absolutely rip it out. It looks fairly new though so I'd be annoyed at essentially paying for a new kitchen that's so gross.
I'd rather find somewhere not done up since the 70s so you're more financially justified in ripping it out.

PrimalLass · 12/02/2018 20:13

'Hideous'?? That's hideously rude.

UnimaginativeUsername · 12/02/2018 20:16

Hideous seems like a gross overstatement.

CountFosco · 12/02/2018 20:18

It's hideous, I'd absolutely rip it out.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

It's not what I'd choose myself if I was buying a new kitchen now but it is a perfectly inoffensive reasonably new fully functional well designed kitchen.

Bluelady · 12/02/2018 20:20

It's a perfectly inoffensive kitchen. Hideous is just plain rude - and untrue.

Yvest · 12/02/2018 20:21

Hardly hideous or gross. Slight exaggeration no?

daisychain01 · 12/02/2018 20:24

It makes me sad to read people saying to replace a perfectly good looking kitchen. Consumerism at its worst. People would give their eye teeth for a lovely kitchen like that.

bakingaddict · 12/02/2018 20:24

I would change the tiles, the black/grey colour is just too imposing and pick some accessories to freshen up the kitchen but otherwise it's OK

DuchessMinnie · 12/02/2018 20:35

It's very similar to ours and we're not considering replacement for years yet. I thought ours was ok when we moved in 3 years ago but have noticed that everyone else seems to have shiny white kitchens now. In 10 years time I think the shiny white kitchens will look dated too.

falang · 12/02/2018 20:47

I only discovered a few years ago that people get new kitchens because they just fancy a new one and I was flabbergasted. I always presumed that people spent that amount of money on something because the old one was falling to bits.

I agree. I have an old broken down gallery kitchen. I would kill for a kitchen like that. All that space, cupboards that aren't falling off, and did I mention the space!

DustandRubble · 12/02/2018 21:02

Definitely wouldn’t put me off. Clean. Looks in good condition. About a million times better looking than the kitchen in the house we bought.

4yearsnosleep · 12/02/2018 23:08

Our kitchen looks a bit like that. Didn't put us off of the house as I knew I'd knock through or do an extension. Our first house also wasn't dissimilar but again we bought it knowing we could live with it. If you're not fussed, I wouldn't bother changing it. If there's stuff YOU don't like then change it. Amanda Lamb irritates the hell out of me showing people houses that weren't suitable before she made them change them Hmm

MrsFezziwig · 12/02/2018 23:24

The dark tiles look a bit depressing so you might want to replace them if you can do it cheaply, for your own enjoyment.
Kitchens are personal and if I was buying your house I wouldn’t thank you for putting in a new kitchen just before you move. It probably wouldn’t be to my taste and I wouldn’t appreciate a hike in the selling price to cover the cost of the kitchen you’d put in.
(and I have just moved from a house with a 1980s kitchen to a house with a 1960s kitchen. Neither myself nor, I’m pleased to say, my buyers were put off at all).

Magstermay · 13/02/2018 07:33

We sold recently and had a hideous old 80s kitchen in there. When we had an agent round they told us not to replace it to sell as it might actively put people off if they thought they’d have to rip out a new kitchen they didn’t like.

As is clear from this everyone’s tastes are different! I personally find it inoffensive and it wouldn’t put me off, although it’s not what I would choose in a shop. The only thing I would consider is changing the tiles for something neutral as it will lighten it up a bit and I think the black tiles date it a bit.

whiskyowl · 13/02/2018 07:58

I think you could update that kitchen relatively inexpensively by swapping out the doors for something a bit more recent and changing the splashback. Would cost a few hundred.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 13/02/2018 08:01

It’s fine. It wouldn’t put me off buying a house. I would live with it like I am my current kitchen.

I think kitchen tastes are very varied so it’s daft to put a new kitchen it to sell. I personally hate clinical white kitchens but most people seem to love them!

OuchBollocks · 13/02/2018 08:07

My kitchen looks a lot like that. Our house was built in 2005. I replaced the dark tiles with white metro ones and re painted, which helped. Would I fuck spend £10k+ replacing a perfectly decent kitchen. If its the Amanda Lamb one from last week (elderly Asian couple) weren't their cupboards literally rotting?

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 13/02/2018 08:19

Unless the doors are falling off and there's mould everywhere, a slightly dated Shaker kitchen (identical to mine!) is not hideous and gross.
Maybe the poster who used those words would like to show us their kitchen? Grin

nuttyslackster · 13/02/2018 08:37

The kitchen would neither be a detraction nor a selling point for me. As someone else said, you could live with it or justify upgrading it if you wished, so I'd leave as is or upgrade the tiles only if you think that would be something you'd enjoy living with in the meantime.

specialsubject · 13/02/2018 08:40

Wood finish is dated? But the catalogues are full of it!!

Apparently the current look is white gloss, no handles - doesn't seem very practical and in a big kitchen will look like a hospital store room. Each to their own.

Moreisnnogedag · 13/02/2018 08:50

More importantly op did you tidy up to take that photo? My kitchen only looks that organised moments before my ILs arrive!

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 13/02/2018 08:56

No, not for selling. Unless you are selling a house that it very obviously doesn’t fit with and it would be devaluing your property or making it less desirable (eg character cottage or a v expensive period home, or if it makes your kitchen look very dark).

I replaced a very similar kitchen to yours a couple of years ago (maple cabinets, dark tops, dark tiles) but it wasn’t for selling, it was for ‘living’. Plus, ours was falling to bits. It looked ok on the surface but there were irreparably wobbly and knackered doors, bodged plumbing and slippy floor tiling. Plus it wasn’t ‘in keeping’ with the house.

Catra · 13/02/2018 08:57

A kitchen like that would put me off buying a house unless I had the money to replace it. Dated isn't the first word that springs to mind, it's just not to my taste, especially the dark tiles and worktops.

NotQuitePerfect · 13/02/2018 08:58

OMG that is identical to our kitchen!

Any yes it’s in a house built about 11 years ago.

Not the most up-to-date, but clean, functional etc.

As we are staying here for the foreseeable, we will probs update in 1-2 years time. I wouldn’t replace it if we were selling tho Wink
