Would you replace this kitchen?

Was watching Selling Houses with Amanda Lamb last night and to my surprise horror saw the same kitchen as mine featuring as needing to be replaced so the house in question would sell

I didn't think my kitchen was that bad, a bit tired maybe and I never really liked the tiles much

I would like to sell my house in about 3-4 years once my dc would be leaving home and thought that I might replace at that time (possibly just the door fronts and worktop/tiles)

I am wondering whether I should do this now so that I can enjoy the new kitchen or whether I should wait so that the kitchen I choose is more modern at the time and probably in better condition

Would be grateful for any opinions on my current kitchen (is it that bad?) and also whether you would look at updating now or in the future

Would you replace this kitchen?

It looks absolutely fine to me. I think replacing kitchens to sell a house is madness. They're so personal. I wouldn't buy a house with a newly fitted kitchen. I want to have the pleasure of designing my own.

OakFlooring · 12/02/2018 18:10

Exactly what bluelady said. Don’t replace it.

PrimalLass · 12/02/2018 18:13

Nope. Leave it be.

OutyMcOutface · 12/02/2018 18:14

I would 100% replace it. If I were buying I would factor that out of my deposit money.

PrimalLass · 12/02/2018 18:15

But Outy, what if you didn't like the replacement either?

PrimalLass · 12/02/2018 18:16

OP, you could maybe remove some wall units and put in shelves instead. That would lighten it up.

No, it's fine. I would replace the chairs though - they do look dated, maybe some brighter stools instead? I would accessorise with some brighter colours.

Jammycustard · 12/02/2018 18:19

I’d be pleased to see that kitchen; the house I moved into had a brand new kitchen not to my taste. I can’t justify changing it, whilst yours I could.

OutyMcOutface · 12/02/2018 18:20

@Primalass I can deal with not liking or something being slightly dated (like the white gloss kitchens or the cream shaker style with black worktops) or just not really my style (like the mate black ultra modern stuff) but the early naughties look I really hate, it's right up there with the red kitchen for me.

XmasInTintagel · 12/02/2018 18:22

I really like Amanda Lamb, but she does have quite bold tastes! If you listened carefully, on the last episode where she'd redone a bedroom with bold navy and white wallpaper, the woman viewing said it was a lovely room, then 'that'd have to go tho', referring to the wallpaper! The trouble with bold and characterful, is that some people will love it, but others will actively dislike it.
My kitchen is similar to this - fairly bland and hard to hate, and its staying that way :-)!

Pleasebeafleabite · 12/02/2018 18:29

Thanks so much for all the comments so far, they are much appreciated

The kitchen is 11 years old, I take the point that it is an early noughties style

It never occurred to me that someone would actually like a kitchen that was liveable but not to their taste so they could replace and not feel guilty!

I wouldn't replace it and it wouldn't put me off buying a house.
I think it's all relative though, if it was a multi million pound house and the rest of it was immaculate then it probably would make sense to replace the kitchen.

Troels · 12/02/2018 18:44

I have that kitchen too.
We just put new floor it was fake slate before, (light textured large tiles in grey and bits of the cupboard colour, new top I picked grey, Blush it's a bit lighter than yours, and the new tiles are light silver grey large oblongs and the grout is the same colour so you don't see it much.

SueGeneris · 12/02/2018 18:53

I really wouldn't bother! We had a 1980s Howdens varnished wood kitchen with those leaded display cabinets in our last house. On its last legs and v dated when we moved in. We sold it with the same kitchen 7 years later! We have an old kitchen here in our new house and I am really looking forward to replacing it. I'd much rather that than a new one not to my taste.

Clearly you've never bought a house with a brand new kitchen that you hated but couldn't get rid of because it was new and you're a tight Scot. Our next house is probably going to be a doer upper so we don't have to live with someone else's taste!

DavidBowiesNumber1 · 12/02/2018 19:20

I'm selling my 1970's place at the moment. I'm fairly certain it's the original kitchen. I had 2 viewers in the first week of being on the market. Both put offers in so my kutchen definitely didn't put them off!
Your kitchen looks wonderful to me and if you're happy with it then keep it.
You wouldn't recoup the cost of a new kitchen when selling so only change it if you really want to and will get the benefit of using it for the time you are still there.

crackerjacket · 12/02/2018 19:23

No.

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 12/02/2018 19:24

I'd spray the doors and change the handles - too much fake wood going on with the floor but looks in good condition

PickAChew · 12/02/2018 19:25

It's completely inoffensive!

That Amanda Lamb show is almost as bad as changing rooms. DH walked in part way through one I watched, last week, and thought it was some sort of spoof.

user1486076969 · 12/02/2018 19:44

Looks fantastic (compared to mine), I wouldn't replace.

BuzzKillington · 12/02/2018 19:46

Like a shot. It's very dated.

BuzzKillington · 12/02/2018 19:48

We had a kitchen like that, installed in 2001. We replaced it 4 or 5 years ago.

Yvest · 12/02/2018 19:59

I’d be delighted with it as I said. Most of the kitchens on this forum tend to be people replacing with shaker style and range cookers which I actively dislike just as someone else would dislike my preference for a dark modern Matt sleek kitchen so I would far rather have an older clean and functional kitchen which I could replace in my own time.
