Totally overwhelmed with new kitchen decisions.... help appreciated

I think the problem is the space doesn't exist yet..... extension going up but I am having to choose my kitchen now! I am usually pretty good at visualising the finished room and making decisions to get there but totally at sea with this.

New extension space will be ,half dining and half kitchen.

This is the kitchen layout. We are hoping to imitate deVol to some degree so have gone for the Helmsley Kitchen from DIY kitchens.

www.diy-kitchens.com/kitchens/helmsley-alabaster/details/

The run along the wall we are planning to have painted in Mizzle by F and B
www.farrow-ball.com/mizzle/2013-new-colours/farrow-ball/fcp-product/100266

And a worktop of marble effect quartz www.geraldculliford.co.uk/profile/stone/denalicloud

We will have a single and combi ovens in the oven housing and a large induction hob and sink in that run.

Island will be white units with a walnut work top
www.worktop-express.co.uk/wood_worktops/walnut_worktops.html

Floor will be asphalt grey oil engineered wood
www.staki.lt/Products/gallery/provence-collection.html

The other side of the extension will be a dining area.

Was thinking about getting a copper sink but tap will be a Quooker which only comes in stainless steel or chrome so not sure.

Any feedback at all? Does it sound a bit hotchpotch? I feel like we've picked things we like but not sure about it going together. So confused.

Which extractor did you go for Quit?

I would move the hob to the island and then put the sink where the hob is, and have one large window rather than two small ones. I have had a sink with no space next to it, and it drove me mad!

Also, have you had your builder check this? It might not even be 'up to code' to have the sink and the hob that close. (I've just done my kitchen and the builders spoke a lot about 'code'!)

QuitMoaning · 06/02/2018 14:33

@AClearShotOfTheStreet
I went for an unbranded one off Amazon, I think it was a Cookology one. 90cm @£400 and so far I haven't got a single complaint. I am sitting on the island now so I will take some photos

One with extractor up and one with it down and not in use.

Oh you are making me envious. I wanted one of those extractors but we had some issues that made it impractical for us. They are so cool.

snowy1982 · 06/02/2018 14:56

@quit your kitchen looks amazing

tickingthebox · 06/02/2018 15:03

I pulled this randomly of t'internet....

What you need is a working triangle, with a gaps between the cooker, fridge and sink... you have them all in a line.

You could achieve this by moving the sink under the left hand window, fridge stays where it is and hob in the island.

or sink in the island, hob moved to the left, lose the left window for an extractor and leave fridge where it is.

tickingthebox · 06/02/2018 15:08

(i realise this isn't quite your layout, but you get the idea)

QuitMoaning · 06/02/2018 15:44

@snowy1982 Thank you. It is still very new as the kitchen was finished in November and the floor went down today so it is still exciting but I love it. It work within the constraints of the house.

Another view coming up to show where the ovens and sink are

Thanks so much everyone for your input. Been mulling it over and you're right, the layout is wrong. The two windows are already built/bricklayed so may keep the hob there and move the sink into the island and not have wood work tops there. I love the idea of the downdraft extractor though although we haven't got the budget for the Neff/Miele one and although yours looks amazing Quit it is REALLY cheap.... are you worried about the longevity? And did the kitchen fitter put it in for you?

FluffyWuffy100 · 06/02/2018 19:30

@QuitMoaning love that extractor! And kitchen, although it upsets me a little bit your dishwasher sticks out :-(

namechangedtoday15 · 06/02/2018 19:43

OP if it's any help, you don't have to have a wall mounted hood extractor like your diagram. We have a wall mounted extractor above the tall units - you could have it above your wall unit if you keep those. You can't actually see ours from most angles in the kitchen.

QuitMoaning · 06/02/2018 20:49

My flooring guy moved it out to fit the floor and I never noticed it hadn't been put back fully. OH has been tasked with correcting that!!

AClearShotOfTheStreet · 06/02/2018 21:00

Thank you so much for your thoughts on my kitchen today. I massively appreciate your comments. We are having a 90cm island, so perhaps there may not be enough space behind the extractor to the.opposite edge of the island. The alternative is I could have a long thin hob? 90 cm wide but only 35cm deep. Could you pls let me know how much space it all.takes up in the cupboard underneath?

I think you should be facing the room when cooking so I would strongly vote (with two hands ) that your put the hob on the island.

Best wishes and good luck!

Doublechocolatetiffin · 06/02/2018 21:27

I agree with others that the layout could do with a bit of a move around to optimise your use of the space.

Personally I'd move either the sink or hob to the island otherwise you are cramming pretty much all the bits of the kitchen you'll use regularly on one stretch.

We have our sink on our island which works well, the dishwasher is to one side and bins to the other so all of the washing and tidying happens in the same spot. We then had pan draws in the units behind the island and most of our crockery/cutlery goes in the cupboards directly behind the dishwasher. That means its really quick to unload everything into the cupboards and there is very little moving around (too lazy?!)

Think about your cooking process, where do you want your food stored (maybe group the larder cupboards next to the fridge & freezer). Our kitchen designer took me through that sort of stuff step by step and it has really helped get a kitchen that is very user friendly.

Oh and don't forget somewhere for your bins (already mentioned) and cook books.

With regards to the colour scheme, I'd be tempted to go for the same worktop throughout to give the kitchen a consistent feel. I'd go for the quartz over the wood as its so much easier to maintain.

didireallysaythat · 06/02/2018 21:31

I'd put the hob on the island. And ideally I'd rotate the island by 90 degrees so you have a view down your garden when cooking rather than a view of a wall, but then your double door from the play room would mean shall people would walk into the island. I wouldn't go for a copper sink - as it potentially dates the kitchen as 2016ish but if it's your forever kitchen maybe it doesn't matter. We bought a ceiling flush extract fan from Amazon (we couldn't accommodate a surface mounted extract fan in the island as it's only 180cm deep).

I'd also check you've got at least 1m from your dining chairs to the island - looks a little closer maybe ?

didireallysaythat · 06/02/2018 21:32

Oh yes - bins under or next to the sink. My MIL forgot the bins and it just makes a layout clunky.

BougieQueen · 06/02/2018 21:58

All great advice on here.I also went with DIY kitchens but I sent my plan to them before they pressed the button on the final order. They checked things like placing of my sink and hob etc. I also have Helmsley and it turned out really well. Still a work in progress in terms of decoration though. Pics attached.

@AClearShotOfTheStreet

Sorry for kind of hi jacking your thread. But could I ask what you extension size is because I’d love a layout like your floor plan but dubious of the space I have.

Thanks Smile

butterfly990 · 07/02/2018 08:49

Bougie your kitchen is stunning.

minipie · 07/02/2018 09:40

OP in terms of the decor choices, I think they all look lovely, the only bits I would query are

  1. copper sink - it will date I am sure and not sure how easy maintenance is either

  2. the two different woods on the island and floor. The walnut is a very rich warm reddy tone and the oak is faded greyish tone. Both lovely but I don't think they go together. So I'd either change the worktop to quartz throughout, and let the walnut go, or change the floor to something that works with your worktop choices (either reddish toned wood or a tile that has a whitish or greyish base colour so goes with the marble effect quartz)
