What's a resonable price for a packing/moving service?

Just got a quote back from Pickfords and it is mega expensive! We only have a 1 bed flat, all wardrobes are built in and we?re leaving all our white goods. Quoted price is £1700.

Eeeeeeeeek !!! I paid no more than £750 (maybe less) to have a full three bed house moved, including a 'stuffed to the gunnels' garage, and packed.

tokentotty · 27/04/2007 13:37

What area are you in btw?

Sunyshineymummy · 27/04/2007 13:38

That sounds more like what I was expecting and more like the original quote I got over the phone from Pickfords. I will look for someone else.

How far you going ?

We paid £1000 to move round corner from a 3 bedroom house (now white goods or wardrobes) so would have thought your quote is VERY high unless you're moving from John O'Groats to Lands End ! Try a local company.

Sunyshineymummy · 27/04/2007 13:38

Wapping and I'm moving to Wandsworth.

I'm in Southwest London (actually I think the company I used are based IN wandsworth if you want their details ?)

zephyrcat · 27/04/2007 13:40

That's a ridiculous amount!!

We are mopving this weekend from a 3 bed house to a 3 bed maisinette on the 3rd floor... we've got a luton van and 2 men for £270 for the day. We are doing our own packing though.

Twinkie1 · 27/04/2007 13:42

We are paying £1200 - that is for full packing service and everything to be stored for a few weeks until house is ready to move into.

That was the cheapest quote too - one comany wanted £1400 for 10 hours and then £100 an hour if things were delayed!!!!

NoodleStroodle · 27/04/2007 13:42

That's bizarrely high. Pickfords moved us from a 4 bed house to a 2 bed house and then back again and each time it was £1200 - this included packing everything as well - stuff we moved and stuff for storage. I would query it.

Tutter · 27/04/2007 13:45

we moved from sw london 29 miles further west in december

pickfords online quote came out somewhere north of £2k (packing and moving)

we used a small firm known to us and friends and they charged us something like £1200

but this was from a 4-storey townhouse (i.e. a removal man's worst nightmare)
i can give you their details if you like

Twinkie1 · 27/04/2007 13:45

Just used the self pricing thing on Pickford and that came i at between 103 and 1330!!! Not sure if that includes packing either!!

Twinkie1 · 27/04/2007 13:45

Sorry between £1030 and £1330.

Olihan · 27/04/2007 13:46

We're moving a 3 bed house from Bristol to Cheshire, inc packing for £1k. Seems like we're getting a bargain tbh.

Nbg · 27/04/2007 13:47

Gosh that is a ridiculous amount!
We moved with pickfords last year and they charged us £800. That was for a 2 bed semi ram jammed full and moving 70 miles away.
Other quotes we got were cheaper but you didn't get the same service. I.e. no boxesnor you were charged for boxes,.

Twinkie1 · 27/04/2007 13:48

The company we are using is supplying all packing materials and doing the actual packing of everything for us though - well except the 12 boxes I have done to save time and the cost of their boxes!!

Tinker · 27/04/2007 13:50

If only a on-bed flat can you not do it yourself?. We did for £80 odd - 2 bed house, no fitted furniture to leave behind. If you can get a few other people to help it's not so bad.

Sunyshineymummy · 27/04/2007 13:53

Any recommendations gratefully received.

wheelybug · 27/04/2007 13:55

here you go - d&j . As I said, I think they're based in wandsworth. A friend is using them today btw on my recommendation (gulp).

Sunyshineymummy · 27/04/2007 14:01

We won't rather than can't do it as every time we move we end up having a spectacular fall out. Last time we paid about £250 to move us (we packed ourselves) and it was so easy we swore we'd never go back to doing it ourselves (can't remember who this was with though). As DS is currently 13m and at that real needs loads of attention stage and we both work full-time, thought it would be nice to get the packing service as well.

Oh and I'm a lazy cow!

OP posts:
LIZS · 27/04/2007 14:03

yikes that is huge. We paid about £1300 for a 4 full bed including packing, spread over 3 days.

Tinker · 27/04/2007 14:03

A man with a van would be much cheaper surely? You'd have to pack yourselves though.

Sunyshineymummy · 27/04/2007 14:09

The over the phone quote I got from Pickfords was £700 for packing and moving which I thought was more reasonable and I didn't mind paying that amount. I'm just gobsmacked that the final quote has come in at £1000 more. I've fed back to Pickfords and they are getting their sales team to review. In the meantime I've arranged a quote with D&J - thanks Wheelybug.

tokentotty · 27/04/2007 14:12

God, stuff packing yourselves. If you can afford it then good on you, go for it ! I used "Reliable Removals" so perhaps Google them for the phone number and call them. They were really helpful on the phone and gave me a rough quote, and then someone came over and went through exactly what was to be done by them, gave me their precise quote and it was definitely no more than £750 as I mentioned. I recommended them to another friend who used them as well and was very happy with the service.

Blu · 27/04/2007 14:13

£800 for packing and moving a 4 bed-house within a short distance.

Look in yellow pages and get on from the box of the official professional body of movers and shakers, or whatever it is called.
