Just that really - new house with a giant landing so looking for ideas to use the space / make it look 'purposeful'. It's a 5 bed and 1 of those is an office.

All I have really come up with is looking for a nice big sideboard for extra storage and a rug. Not very creative!!

Pinterest 'huge landing' or 'large landing' doesn't reveal much.

Any ideas??

  • Library area, floor to ceiling bookcases, comfy arm chair and a small table
  • is there a utility room in the house? If not you could have floor to ceiling cupboard doors installed to wall off a worktop space with under counter washer and dryer.

Window seat, reading nook with day bed/comfy sofa. Or huge linen/housekeeping cupboard.

Wakeuptortoise · 06/01/2018 21:58

Study desk for the kids. Storage cupboards for towels/ bedding/ spare coats, etc. Bookshelves/ library nook.
Build an en suite?
Can you provide a layout?

We have a large landing area it's about 7ft by 7ft. We have shelves be games and books all three children use read.

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 06/01/2018 22:07

I live the utility area idea! Just think, no more lugging hampers Of dirty laundry downstairs!

PrimalLass · 06/01/2018 22:11

My family had this in a previous house and used it as a kids tv, Xbox type area, with a sofa.

InfiniteSheldon · 06/01/2018 22:13

I've had a large landing, just let the kids use it as a big play area, fought DH tooth and nail to keep desks, tables, lamps , bookcases out of it I loved having the space

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/01/2018 22:14

Bookcases.

dorislessingscat · 06/01/2018 22:25

Zen garden?
Snooker table?
Greyhound track?
Trampoline?
Hot tub?
AirBnB opportunity?

How big is huge?

Catinthecorner · 06/01/2018 22:28

We use our big landing as an office/library/reading area.

FusionChefGeoff · 06/01/2018 22:42

Ha ha love the greyhound track!

We've got a utility room downstairs but maybe I could still work in the idea of hidden baskets etc for sorting.

I thought about a reading zone (DCs or adult) but the fact it's a 'high footfall' area put me off. But seeing as it's such a popular idea I might revisit it.

We have a large landing and have a comfy sofa and bookcase for a nice reading nook. It gets the morning sun so is a nice space.

Also gets its own tree at Christmas and that is where the stockings are found.

Here's the floor plan

There's no natural light apart from bedrooms

A T Rex?

It would keep the kids in bed at night but would be a bugger to dust.

notheretoargue · 06/01/2018 22:55

Looking at the layout, I would actually use it for storage - big plan chests for all towels, bedding, spare bathroom supplies, wrapping paper, standby cards and presents for kids’ parties etc etc etc. Also bookshelves for overflow books, but I can’t imagine wanting to sit and read there.

FusionChefGeoff · 06/01/2018 23:02

That would scare the beejeezus out of all of us I think!!

Yes, maybe it is just storage. The secret / my challenge will be making it look nice and 'designed' rather than just a couple of bits of surplus furniture shoved on the landing.

You could have it as a study/reading area and change the study to a dressing room for the master bedroom.
However you’ve got to consider whether or not you’d really want to sit around on the landing. if not I’d probably just put a nice sideboard or display cabinet there, large lamp, mirror etc and make it look attractive and cosy.

lalalonglegs · 07/01/2018 16:03

It doesn't look that big compared to the rest of the rooms and, as there are six doors plus a staircase accessing it, I wouldn't suggest putting any furniture there as it will undoubtedly get in the way. I'd put up some good pictures to add interest (and lack of natural light means that they won't fade or be light-damaged).

OVienna · 07/01/2018 16:44

Are the walls to the bedroom structural? I would be very tempted to reclaim some of the hallway for the main rooms. Probably not the answer you're looking for..,

OVienna · 07/01/2018 16:45

Maybe that is a crazy idea.

Apileofballyhoo · 07/01/2018 16:49

I thought the same, Vienna.

lalalonglegs · 07/01/2018 18:06

I don't see how that could be achieved without losing access to other rooms by blocking doorways or ending up with some strangely shaped rooms.
