5.7m x 2m rear extension.... Worth it?

Hi all.

I'm looking at a 5.7m x 2m rear extension to act as a play room of sorts for our little girl... I'm just worried about the size? The length seems fine to me at 5.7m I'm just concerned at the 2m width.

Has anyone had an extension/lean to/conservatory fitted roughly this size and would they recommend? And if anyone has do they have any photos of what I can expect size wise? I've looked everywhere online for people who've put pics up of there's similar to this size to no luck...

Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance

Here's a photo of my recently completed extension. We went out 2 metre across the back of the house.

You can see where the old external wall was & it's made a huge difference!

We did specify 2 metres internally though so it's probably 2 and a bit!

I hadn't realised yours was 2 metres rick - it looks WAY bigger than that! The light you have now is incredible.

OP: A lot of the cost of building is in the foundations/digging etc, with the result that sometimes going out 3 metres isn't much more in cost than going out 2 metres. However, I totally understand that it's not always spatially possible to do that in real life. Smile

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 05/01/2018 12:09

I think 2m closed off would be pointless and claustrophobic but added to the end of an open room like teamrick’s it can make all the difference.

namechangedtoday15 · 05/01/2018 16:05

I agree that 2m added on like the pic would be great. A room 2m wide (possibly even narrower depending on thickness of walls etc) would be ok as a study but would feel very small as a living space.

TeamRick · 05/01/2018 21:03

We did go out 3 metres round the side as well whisky for a utility room & man cave!

Even TC couldn't have made that stretch to 7 months! 😬

prettypaws · 06/01/2018 02:29

We have a room that's 2.3 and I think it'd very quickly become too narrow. It might suit a young toddler but it'd feel like a narrow hallway.
Mine has standard furniture on the walls but there wouldn't be room to play in the walkway between them. Once toys, a dolls house etc or a chair go in you'd barely be able to walk past so that wouldn't be great for playing.

whiskyowl · 06/01/2018 08:01

I dunno rick", I think he'd have given it a good go!! Grin.

I know you had more work elsewhere, I'm just amazed that bit of it is so slender. As someone said upthread, it's a huge difference!! I'm so glad your project is coming together now, your kitchen is loooovely!

TeamRick · 06/01/2018 21:41

Whisky I do know what you mean! I 'm living in that space and cannot believe that 2 meters has made such s huge difference!

We wondered whether it was worth it but didn't want to lose too much garden! It is so worth it! 😀

gilby1989 · 22/01/2018 16:23

Hi all. Thanks for the replies.... It would be added onto an extra room like ricks.
Our living room is cosy shall we say so with a 18month old running around I was wondering if that extra space for her to play in would be worth it. If anyone has any more photos who's had similar work so I can see it in action that'd be great. Many thanks for your photo Team Rick Smile

Watching with interest, as we're looking to put a similar sized side extension on. Preferably for a downstairs loo, but I think that's a bit ambitious so prob just as a utility/storage space. We still want to keep access to the back garden though, rather than traipsing through the house, so would need doors on either end. Not sure it's worth it...

gilby1989 · 22/01/2018 16:45

Hi.

Yes ours would be a back extension along the living room and kitchen accessible from both. We looked at converting our side entrance into something similar but as it's joined onto the neighbour it gets awkward and quite costly...

Or back extension would be to open up the living room and kitchen areas.... 2m is all we can go out sadly due to a wall in the garden

Have you got anymore pics of your extension @TeamRick? It’s looks mint and is exactly what we are looking to do on a house we are bidding for. Not sure if we will be able to afford it so might have to wait a few years to build it. Cheers

TeamDixon · 28/06/2019 22:03

Hello there, I'm Team Rick - I'll take some photos tomorrow and post them tomorrow for you 👍

Loveislandfan · 28/06/2019 22:40

Such an interesting post because we’ve been thinking the same. Is a couple of metres worth it for the upheaval and stress of planning etc.

Are you able to share costs at all @TeamRick?

Did you need planning permission?

TeamDixon · 28/06/2019 23:41

We needed planning permission because we're an end terrace, we wouldn't have otherwise, would have been under permitted development.

Cost - we did a wrap around so it wasn't just the 2 metres out the back - I think we were quoted about 70K originally but it ended up costing a bit more than that because we sacked the builder - it was hell and all detailed on the Extension 2017 thread I think - but so worth it now!

I''ll definitely put some photos up tomorrow!

TeamDixon · 29/06/2019 13:25

Right I've had a quick tidy up! Grin

You can see where the old external wall was, in line with the steel. And that's 2 meters internal.

I think the builder should prob have put the steel slightly higher because you can see the lip where it was boxed in but as I said he was awful, was glad to get rid of him and I don't really notice it anymore.

Hope that helps.

That look awesome! Thanks for taking the time to post the pics . It’s deffo made my mind up in moving forward and going for the extension.

emlia1980 · 29/02/2020 21:03

I know this is an old thread but @TeamDixon I am looking at the same kind of extension but just 5x2m - are you serious it cost £70k???

Rockstar53 · 29/02/2020 21:46

Hello - TeamDixon here with a name change
We went round the side as well so although the back only went out by that amount we had 2 extra rooms on the side.
Does that help 😄

Rockstar53 · 29/02/2020 21:53

A utility room & DH got a workshop/mancave - the £70k wasn't just for the 2m across the back!

Igottaknowyounow · 01/03/2020 08:56

@Rockstar53 our architect has suggested the same thing, and we’re also reluctant to lose garden when we could (just about) make do with internal wall moves.
I love how yours looks and could picture the same on our kitchen diner.
Which way do your doors face?
Apologies for nosy questions Grin

Notwatchingtvtoday · 01/03/2020 10:16

rockstar53 can I ask you about your kitchen, it looks lovely. Are you pleased with it and where did you get it from? Also what wood is your worktop please ?
Thankyou

Rockstar53 · 01/03/2020 21:02

The doors at the back face North East, lovely & sunny in the mornings - is that what you meant?
The kitchen is from DIY Kitchens it's the Altino high gloss in Petrol Blue - we were going white right up until the last minute & then changed our minds after seeing a similar one in a magazine. It's brilliant I love it. It doesn't show finger prints or anything.

The work tops are full stave oak 3 inch - I actually bought them off ebay but I think they're worktop express. Each length was 3 metres - when we were trying to oil them before they went on we couldn't even turn them over they were so heavy!

This is weird answering these questions - we had a bloody arse of a builder - all detailed on one of the Extension threads - 2017 I think but now it's amazing - I sit @ the bar drinking a g&t - it's a great space for a party & in the summer when we open the doors it's fantastic - I'll see if I can find a photo.

userxx · 01/03/2020 22:33

@Rockstar53 Have you got much of a garden left? I'm debating extending but will have to sacrifice my already small garden. Absolutely love your kitchen.

Rockstar53 · 01/03/2020 23:00

It's small - wasn't big to begin with - but nice outdoor space that we enjoy!
