How much for new front door?

I need a new front door and possibly a window. How much should I expect to pay??

I think mine was 550 including handle, lock, hinges, letterbox, weatherseals all around the edges and draught excluders, and fitting. It's solid wood with a bit of glass at the top. I painted it with F&B and it still looks new over a year later.

LadyFarnborough · 04/01/2018 08:15

We paid £1300 for a coloured composite front door last year.

candlefloozy · 04/01/2018 10:39

Wow. I really had no idea they would be so expensive

We have a Solidor. If you google composite front doors, the recommended brands are Rock and Roll for. I wanted this type rather than solid wood for ease of maintenance (plus no warping) and for security reasons (very strong). It was about £1200 iirc and our builder fitted it as part of a renovation.

namechangedtoday15 · 04/01/2018 11:16

Not Roll for - Solidor!

prettypaws · 06/01/2018 02:13

We have a porch infront and no exposure to rain so I was happy with solid wood. In saying that the porch double door is solid wood and in 55 years it hasn't warped so I don't necessarily think you need to use expensive composite. You can pick up nice wood front doors in b&q and trade places for £120+, it's the door furniture and fitting that bump the cost up.

candlefloozy · 06/01/2018 07:05

@prettypaws we have a porch too. The porch door seems fine but the front door is so so draughty. We really need a new one

Or a plane and some draught strip.

Singlebutmarried · 06/01/2018 11:06

We got a composite door and two large windows. Was £2500

The door is a rocdoor and really nice.

Just had a stable door fitted at the back and that was £1580

Allthepinkunicorns · 06/01/2018 11:50

We had a new composite door and a top window as I live in a terrace and you have the bit above the door, anyway that cost £2200, we got some ridiculous quotes from other companies trying to rip me off.

OctoberOctober · 06/01/2018 16:17

Had a quote for similar this week, £1100 for composite door, £250 for window.

Fairylea · 06/01/2018 16:18

We have a solidor and paid £1200 for it (including fitting). We absolutely love it.

We were told that if we had gone for a straightforward upvc replacement it would have been £750ish.

EggsRoyale · 06/01/2018 17:55

We're about to get a solidor fitted for£1800. Shopped around quiet a bit and a good composite door fitted was £1500-£2200! We are very exposed to weather so had to go for more expensive door furniture to avoid pitting too.

prettypaws · 06/01/2018 18:51

Ours was really draughty too, it already had a strip along the bottom but it was the original with non safety glass too. With the porch I found composite unnecessary. The new weatherseals all around have made a huge difference. The joiner got it all from Howdens, the pic is from their website, although I've since seen it cheaper elsewhere.

Thanks for your replies. So basically around 2k is the average id say? Yeah we just need a better fitted door. It's full of glass too so that's not going to make things any warmer really. I'll have a look at a solidor

Just checked and we paid £2,700 for composite front and back doors and a full height glass panel to one side of the front door.

The back door is very plain (white, simple one window), but the front door is gorgeous (coloured composite, patterned and lead lined stained glass). Ironically they cost exactly the same!

If you happen to be around Berks/Bucks I’d happily share the company details. They were excellent and many neighbours were so impressed that they’ve also had doors fitted by them.

oldbirdy · 08/01/2018 21:11

We got a wooden front door, it's accoya wood which is meant to be stronger, less inclined to warp and have great weather proofing. We found a Victorian door we liked and the local joinery copied it for us. I think fitted, including the surrounding and etched window glass above, it was about 1.5 k though we could have saved 400 quid by having plain glass instead of bespoke made stained glass panels. I love it.

sdaisy26 · 08/01/2018 23:16

We paid £1400 for a composite front door & upvc back door a couple of years ago.

Once we'd done it, we had no idea why we'd suffered with ill-fitting wooden doors for so long before!

The composite doors look so smart as well. We've since moved & now have a wooden one again - and the lock is sticking in the cold weather! Will look to upgrade at some point.

mumgointhroughtorture · 08/01/2018 23:24

We had a quote from one of the leading windows and doors company and the salesman did the hardsell . Reducing the quote twice whilst sitting in the living room . We thought he was staying for tea .
It was still £800 more expensive than the local company we used who did no hard sell , they didn't even come out to quote . They took the measurements , gave a price and left us to decide with no pressure .

Definitely find a local firm who may give you a cheaper quote.

Sorry to crash your post OP, but I’m near that area @UnimaginitiveUser could you let me have the company details?

Cavort · 08/01/2018 23:40

We had a gorgeous composite Truedor fitted last week. It was £900 including fitting. You design your door on their website and then a local fitting company emails a quote.

UnimaginativeUser · 09/01/2018 07:00

Pm sent Morph.

MrsDilber · 09/01/2018 07:10

I was quoted £2,200 by safe style 3 years ago, we haggled this price down to £1,300. I told them I wanted to get another quote and got the exact same door (exact!) Black, composite door with lovely windows, for £900 from Mainstream windows, who didn't give us stupid quotes.

SS sent a manager to quote, I said "have you seen my crap car on the drive? Even if I was wealthy, I wouldn't pay £2,200 on a door".

Whenever SS cold called, I'd tell them I wouldn't use them for anything, ever.

Don't let them guilt you into agreeing ("why have you had us in if you're going to waste our time", is a favourite).

4yearsnosleep · 09/01/2018 10:45

We have a gorgeous Solidor and it was £1260 fitted. I completely love it and it has made such a difference to the inside & outside of the house.

We paid £1400 for a coloured composite door and windows (1 frosted glass either side). Really happy with it, much warmer, more secure that the rubbish wooden glazed one we had before.
