Black window frames inside - any regrets?!

Hi,

I know this is done to death (probably by me tbh) but I've to order my windows in January for a new build and am panicking!!

It's not just the cost and stress of getting it right, it's the pressure of choosing a colour I'm going to be happy looking at for 30 years.

Anyway, am contemplating black for the inside (more than likely the outside too).

Has anyone here done this and regretted it?

Jesner I'd love to see some photos!

Do you find it dark at all?

Holly I've wondered about the colour thing myself!

It would really depend on the house and the style.
I tend to prefer the dark grey windows to black.
I have a few clients at the moment who are getting new windows
One has a mix of white (in the old cottage) and dark grey (in the modern glazed extension)
One has dark grey with slim 'Crittall' type windows (floor to ceiling windows, lots of white walls)
And the third has oak on the outside with white on the inside.
The first 2 houses have rather lovely slim profile windows which are expensive but look lovely in the dark colours. We didn't like the thicker cheaper frames as they seemed to heavy.
I don't think you can generalise as to what is right for you but I would go with your gut. If you are not sure then it's probably not for you.

Ours are blue inside and out. Sort of grey blue. They're factory painted wooden replacement sash windows as close to original style as possible so the blue makes a feature of them. No regrets.

White stands out but black doesn't? Confused

Unless you live in a minimalistic, white emulsioned loft space with an industrial chic type decor and your windows are double height, I think it will look awful.

We have friends who have black, very expensive windows in a house they bought from an architect. Looked OK whilst he lived in and itvwss all painted white it but theybhave small children who wanted pink painted bedrooms etc. The windows looked awful. Now having to rip them all out of a 4,000 sqf house and it is hideously expensive

Personally, unless you're loaded I always think it's much better to play it safe on the 'big ticket' things...windows, doors, driveways, roofs, rendering...etc etc... have fun with the cheaper stuff that won't cost a kidney to replace when you get bored.
Expensive stuff though, either go classic or bland, it's not exciting no, but it won't look as dated in 10 years either for example grey...I really like it but I know it will be so past it in a few years (if it's not already) however repainting a few walls is nothing as expensive/labour intensive as windows.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 22/12/2017 23:59

The house is a 2 story with attic, white render, grey zinc roof and cedar cladding.

Black actually doesn't stand out when looking out at a view, it's the same reason tvs have black frames, your eye ignores it.

Probably good advice sadclown, definitely not loaded :(

I’ve got very dark grey that look almost black inside and out and love them. On reflection can’t imagine having white I don’t think it would look as good. House is new build modern and contemporary but not clutter free and sparse. Don’t be talked out of dark windows if you like them in pictures as you will love them in your house.

SoTotallyOverThis · 23/12/2017 08:33

There’s a house near me which is terraced and gone for dark grey / black. Personally I hate it. Admittedly I haven’t been inside so I can’t comment on how it looks (although I agree with other posters comments about having a minimilaist look) but from the outside it stands out against the other houses on the road and it looks wrong. Like someone was trying to be too clever and failed. I’d only get it if I lived firstly in a detached property, was minimal inside and was an extremely light and breezy property

Fairylea · 23/12/2017 08:35

If it’s your forever home then go for it if you like it but lots of people will be put off by it if you want to sell at some point. Personally I think it looks horrible.

TheDowagerCuntess · 23/12/2017 09:01

I love black window frames. Thinking of painting our kitchen window frames black when we re-do it. And I definitely don't think you can't add colour into the mix.

Have a look on Pinterest.

Soozikinzii · 23/12/2017 09:03

I think the black window frames are so classy I love them ! I have the dark brown ones - I've had mine over 20years - but with white frames inside - don't they do that with the black ones?

TeamRick · 23/12/2017 11:27

Anthracite grey here, I know they're doors not windows but I really like the dark frames!

Black window frames inside - any regrets?!
opinionatedfreak · 24/12/2017 00:51

I've had grey in my last two properties. Both modern.
I think it has aged well - this flat is >15 years old.

notangelinajolie · 24/12/2017 00:59

We have black bi-folds and a black single pane floor to ceiling window in the kitchen. And a black framed stained glass window and door at the front. All the rest are painted white - all black everywhere would be too much for me and a little bit too 'trendy' and I'd be worried about them dating.

Sallylondon · 24/12/2017 09:48

it's the pressure of choosing a colour I'm going to be happy looking at for 30 years

In which case, I think you’re totally mad if you put something in that is so fashionable at the moment.
Though on the plus side, any condensation marks wouldn’t show.

Baxdream · 24/12/2017 09:53

We've gone with white, as much as I like grey I don't think it suits our house as we're semi detached and I'd worry they'd go out of date.
Our work isn't finished so excuse the unfinished/messy look

80sMum · 24/12/2017 09:58

How about having wooden windows? Then you could paint them any colour you like and they would always be "on trend"? (However, I say that as someone who has white pvcu windows throughout, because I don't like painting window frames!)

strugglingtodomybest · 24/12/2017 10:00

We've got dark brown and although it looks nice from the outside, I've grown to hate it inside. When we redecorate there is always the question of 'will it go with the windows?'. I wish we had white.

TheDowagerCuntess · 24/12/2017 10:25

White can be great. It can also be deeply bland.

The beauty of wooden frames is that you can re-paint them any time it takes you.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 24/12/2017 10:44

Thanks all. We are going to get aluclad so the inside will be paintable, worst case!

Photos look great.

Just came across this show house. They either have black or very very dark grey windows. They've also teamed them with coloured walls.

Does it work?

I think black frames look stunning if they are very fine, the thick black frames look cheap and heavy and are the first thing you see in a room, not a good look.
