Help me plan my teeny tiny bathroom

HeyPesto55 · 18/12/2017 13:21

Ok, so our 3 bed house has the world's smallest bathroom. So small in fact that the door can't fully open and opens onto the bath. We would like to keep a bath though.

Also, I am super keen not to take any space out of the back bedroom and get our tiny bathroom to work. Not many layout options unfortunately as it's a slightly odd shape.

So one solution is a folding door, BUT I HATE those bi fold doors on bathrooms with a passion. Sliding door not an option. Was contemplating knocking out the door frame and installing a slightly narrower door as literally every inch counts.

Is this a bad idea???

Pretty sure this is ours (I have to be honest it's been just over a year since we renovated our flat and I've blanked most of the experience out!

Might be a tiny bit too tight but if you got a super clever plumber it might not be impossible.

What about specially designed compact units and put bath along longer wall?

RandomMess yes, for DC primarily but also because we don't plan to be here forever and I honestly think it's better to have a bath if you can (though might just be me).

Scribblegirl thank you, yes - definitely would need expert planning with bathroom fitters but might be possible... I can finally dream Grin

Jellybean85 i love those but the projection is normally a bit longer than a short projection toilet (IYSWIM).

Off-set pivot door - so small side tips into hall way..

So a short bath fine for your needs and for selling house Grin my DH loves baths and he's 6'3" which rules out a fair few bath shapes and sizes!!

HeyPesto55 · 18/12/2017 21:31

Interesting another20. Though I am worried about anything going into the hallway and knocking someone down the stairs...Shock

Do want or need to replace the bathroom - the layout is probably as good as it gets from space perspective - so it could be very expensive exercise to achieve very little. Maybe concentrate on the door. Maybe just build the frame in a bit from the RHS so that you have a smaller non standard door that opens back against the wall. Opening out the full size door isnt the problem you think it is - we have this arrangement in another property that we have - a but awkward yeas but not possible to knock someone down the stairs. Could you move it away from the stairs if this concerns you - so come in where the sink is now and move the sink to where the existing door is?

HeyPesto55 · 19/12/2017 08:27

Ah ok, you do make a very good point. Considerably less expensive to trial a different fitting door I guess, another20. There isn't enough space to move the door to the sink area I don't think. And would take space out of the 2nd bedroom.

Frankly, the bathroom could do with an overhaul anyway though.

Lots of food for thought. I knew posting here would be the best thing to do! You're all very clever Grin much better than DP

My dm has a bifold door between her kitchen and utility. I hate them too but this one is really smooth and the movement is really nice. When it's closed it looks like a normal door. Maybe spend a decent bit and it'll save changing the bathroom.

JT05 · 19/12/2017 10:20

Ideal Standard do a small bathroom range. I think it’s called Studio.

SealSong · 19/12/2017 10:40

I would do this, if you can fit it in:
Slightly short bath on left hand wall, tap end where sink is, with room at foot end to put in slim toilet facing right hand wall, slim sink opposite on right hand wall
Wall mount the loo and sink, underfloor heating, light coloured flooring with small pattern/plain, white tiles/white painted walls.

HeyPesto55 · 19/12/2017 17:42

Thank you, I'll have a look at the ideal standard range, JT05

Jacobsbread* maybe I am unfairly against them and haven't seen a posh enough one?!Think I'd prefer the pivot door option though...

SealSong would you put a corner sink in? Or definitely on the right wall?

My bathroom is teeny like yours, we had a quote for 6k which to me sounded absolutely ridiculous, how much do you think yours will cost?

HeyPesto55 · 19/12/2017 18:07

That sounds ludicrous! As the footprint is so small, the flooring and tiles shouldn't be too much...

I was hoping for around 2k? Dependent on fittings/door options obviously.

Does 6k include some pretty pricey fittings?

jimijack · 19/12/2017 19:05

No nothing fancy at all! Bog standard bathroom & tiles etc, I don't do fancy!

HeyPesto55 · 19/12/2017 21:19

Hmmm, strange. Definitely seems like a lot with no additional features/additions.

OP posts:
RemainOptimistic · 19/12/2017 21:28

Space wise the layout you currently have is the best you'll get, if you keep the bath.

You won't get that bathroom redone for much under 3k. We paid 2k fitting and 2k fixtures/tiles for a bathroom approx 1.2m x 1.6m. (Ceiling and boxing in not included and still not done).

Definitely sort that door out. Ours has a very narrow door which I hate but now I understand why it's there! It's only 60cm wide. It must be to save space and make it easier to get in and out - it also opens into the bathroom like yours.

HeyPesto55 · 20/12/2017 18:10

Thanks RemainOptimistic. How annoying is your door? Does it feel considerably narrower?

I think the bath on the left hand side would feel better if we can't sort the door as it would allow the door to open. Though I guess you have to think about where you could then stand to then close it.

I need a life size prototype!

Hmmmm.

allthegoodnamesalreadytaken · 21/12/2017 08:57

pocket door?

Geneticsbunny · 21/12/2017 15:51

Toilet with a high cistern might be a bit smaller?

FleurWeasley · 21/12/2017 19:47

We had a very short bath in old House and I loved it! It was nice and deep so I could lie in hot water with my feet out to cool down.

ScreamingValentaMySantaExpress · 21/12/2017 19:54

You mention a life-size prototype - do any of your neighbours have a similar house, and are you on friendly enough terms to ask to see how they've arranged their bathroom?

RemainOptimistic · 22/12/2017 00:35

Yes the door does feel narrower - a standard internal door is 80cm or more. Grin it's annoying but as I said, now I know why it's so bloody narrow I can accept it! It desperately needs replacing but impossible to buy off the shelf at b and q due to its mini proportions...

fluffydogs · 22/12/2017 08:45

Can't you just change the door to open outward?
