Are toilet roll holders a necessary evil or unbelievably naff?

Looking at refitting our bathrooms and I say we don't need toilet roll holders as toilet roll can go on the windowsill and DH says you HAVE to have a toilet roll holder.

Can the collective wisdom of mumsnet give us a definitive answer Smile

I just find no loo roll holder very gross, especially if I am a guest. I don't want to touch other peoples shit, or best avoid it as much as possible. And the kids always knock the free standing ones over.

Loo roll to hand is best, preferably from a fixed holder. The open ended ones are the best; thin, easy to change, discreet so not 'matchy' like people say.

Also the amount of times I have dropped toilet rolls and he whole thing has unfurled away! Rather it was fixed.

Loo roll holders for me, practical and unfussy ones. 👍

the correct way...

Toilet roll holder to the left. When our bathroom was being re-fitted, the tradie mark the place while I sat on the lavatory pan for practice.:o

Spares are in a drawer under the wash hand basin.

Cannot imagine why anyone would have a hamper of bog rolls on view, or worse, the bog roll stacks where all the (literal) shite from the bog gets sprayed on it every flush. Bleuurgh.

Love this! Personally I find loo roll holders a bit tacky & dated, this is much nicer!

I don't have toilet roll holders, I stick the toilet rolls on a bathroom shelf next to the loo.

Our downstairs loo is so small the only place for a holder was on the back of the door. You can reach it whilst sat on the loo. It’s very neat.

Holder downstairs, no holder upstairs - but a small cupboard just opposite loo so roll goes on there - ambidextrous! We moved in a year ago and that was how it was then - and there are no holes in the bathroom wall for a holder so the bathroom has been been holderless since 1956.
In the 1950's (see I'm getting on) there used to beSunday newspaper articles about what is U (upper class) and NON-U (the rest of us) the way the roll is put on the holder matters - paper at the back by the wall is U, paper dangling down from the roll at the front non-U.
I saw an article eary 1970's I think, someone had researched into lid down / lid up when flushing. At the time there was a make of seat with lid where the lid curved round and completely covered the seat when closed - but it turned out there was more aerosol spray from the loo with the lid down.
We don't worry about visitors touching our loo roll - we never let anyone in our house and never visit anyone else's either. One of the benefits of being mentally ill.

A relative with a huge, 17thC holiday home in France just has waste paper baskets with loo rolls in. The bathrooms are all very spacious though.

For more modest bathrooms I don’t see holders as naff - just a necessity.

I have a metal freestanding toilet holder and I also have one on the wall.
Hate having them loose.

I can't believe some people see toilet roll holders as "unnecessary clutter" Hmm
