Are toilet roll holders a necessary evil or unbelievably naff?

Looking at refitting our bathrooms and I say we don't need toilet roll holders as toilet roll can go on the windowsill and DH says you HAVE to have a toilet roll holder.

Can the collective wisdom of mumsnet give us a definitive answer Smile

I don't like them. Unnecessary clutter. Have a spare in the cupboard/close at hand.

DryHeave · 12/12/2017 21:25

We have a toilet butler (I just love that that is what they’re called).

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 12/12/2017 21:35

Grin gamerchick!

HarrietVane99 · 12/12/2017 21:43

Loo roll holder, but get an open ended one, so you can just slide the new roll on without all the bother of taking it apart. Mine curves up at the end to stop the loo roll falling off.

theconstantinoplegardener · 12/12/2017 21:44

I think it's a bit unhygienic not to have a toilet roll holder. As gamerchick says, you need to minimise handling of the loo roll to reduce contamination with body fluids/faecal bacteria. Think of all the people who use your bathroom, in addition to your family! You don't know what germs visitors might inadvertently leave behind.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 12/12/2017 21:47

No one uses my bathroom! Perish the thought!

FluffyWuffy100 · 12/12/2017 22:09

I have a floor standing one. Didn't want to drill into the tiles!

PigletJohn · 13/12/2017 01:16

Have one on each side. Not only is this ambidextrous, it also means you have a spare at hand.

StealthPolarBear · 13/12/2017 01:18

Just to disagree with the ft st few posters I hate them and when we had our bathroom done we deliberately didn't have one fitted. It's another thing to go dusty and rusty.

Battleax · 13/12/2017 01:21

Another vote for free standing.

First bought them when we rented but came to prefer them for lots of reasons.

altkat · 13/12/2017 01:24

Our bathroom is tiny, you can reach into the sink unit from the loo. So toilet roll holder is stuck to the inside of the sink unit. Neatly tidied away! and stops DS from eating it

Mxyzptlk · 13/12/2017 01:26

I'm with the "no unnecessary clutter" gang.
Our toilet roll has stood on the corner of the bath for XXX years. I do have a freestanding holder for extra rolls tho.

happymummy12345 · 13/12/2017 01:49

I'd say you have to have one. We have one on the wall, and a tall one to stack the extra rolls on

1DAD2KIDS · 13/12/2017 01:56

I have one bathroom with toilet holder and another toilet without said holder. It's been this way for 2 years since I moved in. The conclusions of my findings are I don't give a fuck either way. So I won't be going to the time and expense to fit one in the one without.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 13/12/2017 02:27

Toilet roll sitting on window ledge is naff

EmmaGrundyForPM · 13/12/2017 02:41

I've never thought about it before but all our toilet roll holders are on the left of the loo. That's where the walls are in our house. We're all right handed and it's never been a problem!

QuiteUnfitBit · 13/12/2017 12:50

EmmaGrundyForPM Surely if you are right handed, your loo roll holder should be on the left, as it's easier to lean round?
(I'm left handed, and our loo roll perches on the radiator.)

1960s, Miaow.
I knew someone who knitted/crocheted lots of those dollies, and very popular they were too. Smile

EmmaGrundyForPM · 13/12/2017 13:19

I agree QuiteUnfitBit. It was the OP who said her husband wanted it on the left because he was lefthanded.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 13/12/2017 13:26

Miaow
crochet doll lady was not a serious suggestion!

SevenTillFour · 13/12/2017 13:59

Now... which way round for the actual toilet roll - feeding over the top of the roll, or underneath? Grin

Hoppinggreen · 13/12/2017 14:01

Just had 2 of our batherroms done and I haven’t got wall loo roll holders in either.
In one is a freestanding thingy and it the other there is a gap down the side of the loo with a shelf where pipes have been boxed in and ther is a stack of loo rolls on there
No way was I drilling holes in my lovely new wall panels

Lancelottie · 13/12/2017 14:06

SevenTillFour - get a free-standing one, place it directly in front of the loo, and watch people's brains explode as they try to work out which way round is now 'over' or 'under'.

HarrietVane99 · 13/12/2017 18:18

I've now got adverts for bathrooms on this thread.
