That's about right Whisky, the fabric wasn't my first choice, but the only one my husband liked. The doors are shaker, but I'm aiming for a more modern take on it. I like colour, so the walls will mainly neutral, but there'll be pops of teal & purple.

Your headmaster sounds scary!

I didn't like the green tint to Hague Blue and I'm a little concerned that Basalt is a bit like that too. The first one is Drawing Room blue by F&B.

theredjellybean · 10/01/2018 15:12

Can I ask... All of you with islands in darker colours... Is it in big rooms? Are you at all worried about it being fashionable now but may date?
My dp wants a dark kitchen with light work tops but I think will date

4yearsnosleep · 10/01/2018 15:30

It is a big room, but I'm determined to go with what we like rather than worry about what would date. If we don't like it in the future, we can always repaint!

theredjellybean · 10/01/2018 15:32

Good point on re painting...

NamedyChangedy · 10/01/2018 15:54

4years sorry I'm no help as I think they're all great! What will the fabric be used for?

I also ordered my kitchen in the DIY Kitchens sale, to take advantage of the 10% discount. That was during the sale in September, and if memory serves there was one over Easter as well, so they're really quite frequent. I wonder if it's worth holding on for the next sale until you have a clearer idea of the space - we had to reconfigure a lot of ours due to structural / drainage issues, nothing too major but it did mean making some changes to the kitchen layout, so I was pleased to not have committed. Our kitchen is almost 1m shorter than it was shown in the architect's drawing.

But having said that, DIY Kitchens will of course allow you to change your order up to a certain date, so if you order it now perhaps just keep that date top of mind, so you and your builder can make any critical layout decisions before then.

whiskyowl · 10/01/2018 17:28

4years - I like it and think it will look lovely with your look!

dust hooray for your kitchen! I can't wait to see how it shapes up, it's going to be brilliant.

I second the caution about waiting until you have a plastered room to finalise a kitchen. It's OK if the space exists already, but if it's a hypothetical room that has yet to be built, a million things can change the dimensions. It's a good idea to have an idea of the range you want, though, because you can then design details in. For example, I knew early on that Ikea units are 63cm deep, not 60cm deep, which meant that a big window on the plans had to be moved just a few centimetres to one side so that it would be bang in the middle of two facing runs. Knowing this months ago is paying dividends now the kitchen is going in.

On colours, I think paint manufacturers are making big efforts to try to get the fashion in wall colours to cycle more rapidly, and looking at the amount of people who went for grey who are now switching up to dusty pinks/purples, I suspect it is working well for their profits! It's less of a concern for walls, where you can repaint, than things like kitchens or bathroom suites. But I still think if you love something -
really love it, not just in a "it's fashionable" way - it's worth getting it. The exception would be if you are planning to sell in the short to medium term, where something really far out there might put buyers off. That said, my BIL did a gorgeous green kitchen and sold his house for £100k more than he bought it for, proving that anything done well will sell!

DustandRubble · 10/01/2018 17:51

It was suggested I avoid the fancy patterned tiles I like in our new bathroom because they might date. And I’m sure they will, fashion moves on. But I love them and I’m not that bothered about fashion so I will keep them.

Everyone keeps insisting metro tiles will fall out of fashion, but people really like them so they stick around. I agree with whisky that you just get what you love.

4yearsnosleep · 10/01/2018 19:45

The DIYKitchens sale in Oct didn't include our range, hence why i want to order now. If can be changed up to 3 weeks before delivery, so I think we'll be ok. The design is pretty flexible providing the walls aren't different to the plans by 50cm + out, so fingers crossed 🤞🏻!

The fabric is for the blind on the blue wall. :)

A few things we are going for are currently considered 'on trend' but we're going to be living here for 10+ years after spending so much on an extension!!!! Thus I really don't care if it will date as I just want something I love and that suits us Grin

Believeitornot · 10/01/2018 21:07

We’ve got The Hague blue island in a big room - it’s about 5m by 6m (kitchen, dining and living room). It’s also south facing and the walls and wall units plus worktop are white. So it works well. There is sort of a green tinge - but it’s subtle. We went for it because we love it, not because it’s fashionable. Last time we went for a much more neutral plan kitchen but we knew we’d be moving. This doesn’t feel too whacky.

So the £10k garden is because the patio is 8mx3m with three retaining walls due to the sloped lawn. The walls and patio are the biggest costs and we’ve asked for expensive stones apparently. So we will look again at costs and options. Dh suggests we DIY some of it 😨

Def agree with whisky about planning the kitchen on a plastered shell. I didn’t because I didn’t want to wait and we’ve got bigger filler gaps than I’d have liked.

Things have slowed down here. Utility room is taking ages to finish - they’re waiting for delivery of another slim base unit which I ordered because I went for the units which were not based on the plastered shell. I didn’t want an 18cm filler so got a base cupboard.

4years - I phoned diy earlier in the week & the lady on the phone said they were extending the sale for the rest of Jan. I hope this is correct as we aren't rushing to order now!

Which range are you going for?

Baxdream · 11/01/2018 07:23

We have internal doors and heating in our master bedroom. Carpet is being fitted next Thursday! X

whiskyowl · 11/01/2018 08:39

Builders are fitting the kitchen!! There still many pieces waiting to be delivered from Ikea but all the base units are here so they can get cracking. I feel both excited and nervous about how it will end up looking. One side of it is exceptionally complicated because we are having quartz as a worktop, and splashback on three sides, and I'm really hoping that we can get it looking good.

bax - love the doors & wall colour!

I'm

theredjellybean · 11/01/2018 09:39

Whisky.. Pics of your kitchen please... I like ikea kitchens but will be interested in what you think re: Quality etc

whiskyowl · 11/01/2018 09:49

I will, I promise! At the moment it is a building site so you can't see anything at all but as soon as we have something in place that looks like a kitchen I will post. However, I would urge caution about ordering from Ikea. The stuff itself is really great quality BUT the ordering process and customer service are the worst I have ever experienced from any company, anywhere and have been a significant source of stress over the last month or so. There are times when I've been on the hold line for the 5th time listening to Abba for 40 minutes when I have felt utter despair!!

I realise I've been a bit rubbish with pictures on this thread - we have a bit of a situation in our lives with a stalkery person and I've really got out of the habit of sharing any images at all due to paranoia! But I don't think they would be able to trace me on here and anyway, it's just a kitchen. Smile

DustandRubble · 11/01/2018 09:50

Lovely doors Bax. And exciting about the kitchen whisky, I am sure it will look fabulous.

Floor sanding happening here today. Things are going to get noisy.

theredjellybean · 11/01/2018 10:58

Understand whisk... I have a job that makes any social media type presence in advisable so would be wary too.

Did anyone see 'love it or list it' last night.... The kitchen was exactly what I want but I didn't know till I saw it... Though thought kirsty was off her rocker giving family with a toddler a sitting /play family area basically in the kitchen... The family said they loved it but I can imagine toys all over the floor, standing on bloody lego while carrying a pan of boiling pasta.... Aghhhhhhh... But off to find the kitchen they used

4yearsnosleep · 11/01/2018 12:30

Oooh SDaisy, that's interesting. We're going to order how and update the colour before delivery as my OH isn't 100% on any of the navy's so we're going to try a couple of Valspar ones. We're going for Norton as it's a simple shaker and I'm a bit in love with the solid wood doors. Hoping to scrimp & save & order cheap units for the utility Room tooGrin

I briefly considered giving up wine to lower our food bills and save more, instead I've bought all of Aldi's red wine that's less than £4 a bottle and I'm hoping to find a favorite HmmWine

theredjellybean · 11/01/2018 12:33

4yrs... Excellent research project there with the wine... Maybe write a blog, tag aldi in or send it to them, become Internet wine sensation and make millions... And have posh utility cupboars...

4yearsnosleep · 11/01/2018 12:39

TheRedJellyBean that made me lol a lot WineGrin

whiskyowl · 11/01/2018 14:25

4years - when you have decided on a wine, buy approx 10 cases as you will be getting through a bottle a day once they knock through Grin

I just had to do an emergency run to Ikea for cabinet legs and a ridiculous circular saw thing for a tap. It was like challenge Anneka, though fortunately for other customers I was not wearing a silver jumpsuit. I ran like the wind, ladies and managed 1 hr 10 minutes door to door, which included an order that had to be picked up from the dreaded collection point.

theredjellybean · 11/01/2018 14:42

Is it really that bad?.... I haven't even got a builder yet... And already eyeing up wine rack.. Not sure my liver is up the job

whiskyowl · 11/01/2018 14:49

It's not that bad when they start outdoors.

When they come into the house, though, it's awful. The noise, dust and disruption are terrible. Plus, it's freezing cold without heating. You can't find anything you own, you keep falling over the belongings you have huddled into the one bedroom that isn't affected by the work, and you have to cook on the floor and wash up in the bath. Anywhere builders are working will resemble the Somme, only indoors. It's hard work! But worth it. Smile

theredjellybean · 11/01/2018 14:59

Oh God... Only having simple kitchen knock through and single story extension... I could go live in our city flat for duration but some one probably needs to be here to oversea it... Lots of takeaway and trips to pub I feel

theredjellybean · 11/01/2018 14:59

Might also time it for when dp has long work trip... At least just me and the dogs would be less hassle...

staplegunner · 11/01/2018 15:18

Hoping you don't mind me joining you!

Large family with young DC living in temporary accommodation on site while we complete building our house. It has been over a year due to various complications with planning and getting the building out of the ground. Slowly losing my mind!
While everything is progressing and we are really on the home straight the unexpected costs, cold dark nights, cramped space and winter in general are really taking their toll.
Losing track of the amount of people who tell me it will be worth it in the end but so tempted to cut and run as we have had offers. The thing is we could never afford to buy what we are building. Hoping its just the time of year as usually I'm excited about the project.
Any words of wisdom to keep me going?
