Tiles - opinions

I'm usually okayish at putting things together but I'm going nuts over tiles & would greatly appreciate your opinions!

I'm in the process of decorating our bedroom & bathroom. Bedroom walls are neutral with latte/brown, golds/minks & cream accessories. Floor is darkish real wood. Bedroom leads straight into bathroom so I want the look to continue.

I'd love an aged antique mirror in there on one wall (such as photo) but what tiles would you use on the floor & also wall? The shower floor ideally needs to be mosaic sized tiles due to the base. I don't mind using different tiles. Im thinking neutrals beiges creams browns to flow from the bedroom?

I don't like ultra modern or large plain tiles. It's an old house & all of downstairs is very period.

Please help!!!

What period is your house? Could you use that as inspiration?

lalalonglegs · 27/11/2017 10:49

Marble or natural stone would probably be the most "timeless" but they are pricey.

Sunisshining12 · 27/11/2017 11:49

It's Victorian, so high ceilings & large windows

I'm not a fan of stone or marble in a bathroom it seems modern to me? My main bathroom has black & white patterned floor & metro tiled walls.

I have just put in wood effect tiles in our new shower room. Sounds tacky but they look really good. I got dark grey ones www.toppstiles.co.uk/tprod47761/hanko-tile.html but I like the dark brown ones too.

Titsywoo · 27/11/2017 11:54

Sorry that's just for the floor obviously!

Titsywoo · 27/11/2017 11:57

I was going to go for dark brown wood on the floor then these white tiles on the walls with a tile dado in the middle (or top if I did half wall and bathroom paint above it)

Titsy I love the wood effect tiles I think they're fab! But ive got a few samples here & they look rubbish in this room (thinks it's because I'm going from a room with real solid wood).

I only found out yesterday too that I need mosaic backed tiles for the floor too as it's a walk in shower so needs the flex on the floor.

What styles should I be looking for? What colours? I'm so lost!

For your mosaic, I would keep it really simple and only one or two colours. If you Google Victorian mosaic floor tiles, there are lots of images.

Taupe and white looks less stark than black and white and is perhaps more of and to the Victorian era than a slavish copy.

This kind of thing though this is black and white.

Sorry - the picture didn't show after I first posted.

Beige bathrooms are just horrible. You can always just stick in some brownish things if you really must carry on the theme.

Sunisshining12 · 27/11/2017 13:32

Perfect I'll have a look for some taupe & black mosaics. What would you recommend for the walls?

I agree I'm not a fan of beige bathrooms, especially when the walls & floors are the same tiles.

I love the mirror but it looks more glam than period to me. I would marble is mega classic and it's been used in bathrooms since the ancient times. And in early Edwardian bathrooms in grand houses.

However, I've found some pics here - so perhaps more mirror/glass, or as in the last pic, encaustic and metro tiles. Personally, I find the last one over fussy but could see that it would appeal to some.

@Jojo thanks for taking the time to help Smile oh dear I am so not good at this am I!!

The shower in your first pic is exactly what it will be like, walk in with a simple glass screen. No bath in there.

The shower floor has to be mosaic, not sure how that would work with marble??

It's a large bathroom so I'm worried the area will look bland?

Why does the shower floor have to be mosaic? I've got a walk in shower with normal big tiles.

Tubbyinthehottub · 27/11/2017 14:20

Something like this?

Sunisshining12 · 27/11/2017 15:40

Hi Tubby, we used normal tiles in our main bathroom for the walk in shower & you have to envelope cut the tiles for the fall to the drain, which Im not that keen on, lots of cuts

So, are we thinking mosaic in just the shower? Or the whole floor? What about walls? This is torture!!

OP posts:
JoJoSM2 · 27/11/2017 17:44

I’ve got mosaic on a bathroom floor and larger tiles on the walls. The floor is a great feature so the wall didn’t need anything out of the ordinary.
Most shops have some marble mosaics and if budget permits, Fired Earth do some amazing patterns in marble.

i love white hexagon mosiac tiles with a black border. Your tiler will not thank you for it though!!

Sunisshining12 · 27/11/2017 18:00

Wow they are lovely! Are they mosaics on the middle photo?! Do you think marble walls & mosaic floor would match? Would mosaic all over the floor & wall in shower be too much? Sorry for the questions I'm just lost on this & my OH is absolutely useless!

OP posts:
Sunisshining12 · 27/11/2017 18:42

Definitely want to go for the marble now. Jojo I like those hex mosaics on your last photo. So marble the walls & hex mosaic the entire floor?

White penny tiles? They are quite period I feel - we have them in our 18th C cottage. Walls and Floors are the cheapest (and as mosaic tiles go, penny tiles are ridiculously cheap!). Use with mid-grey grout and they look lovely.
