Is white gloss handleless kitchen naff?

Suomynona · 12/10/2017 12:45

The house is a 60's semi that we're refurbishing to rent out (for the first year or two anyway).

Kitchen will not be an expensive one - i.e from Wickes or soemwhere similar. We want something contemporary with fairly generic appeal, but I'm now wondering if white gloss handleless is a little too commonplace/naff/predictable. I kind of like the soft greys etc but think they will date a lot faster.

Opinions / suggestions please? Thanks.

Weird question but don't your apples get all warm being on the table in front of the radiator?
Not really, we're mean Scots and the heating doesn't go on too often. The back of the kitchen has French doors onto a conservatory and the sun heats up the kitchen most of the time. Also, apples don't last long in this house!

We looked at kitchens from all over and eventually went to a local fitting company who was recommended to us. They fit kitchens from a national company called Lochanna (they have a website). Compared to others, things like soft-close came fitted as standard and the quote was on a par with the DIY shops. We had some other work done, including building a wall and fitting out a utility with new doors and all in the price was £7k excluding applicances and flooring. We didn't choose to go for tiles but went for a splashback and upstand instead so we could change the wall colours when we wanted.

Mine is white matt but with a dark grey island!

I think they'll be around for a while now.

HeartburnCentral · 13/10/2017 11:53

If you have young children white may not be the best choice or you'll spend a lot of time cleaning them.

Isn't that true of anything though? Sticky dirty children touch everything!

Ttbb · 13/10/2017 13:06

White Matt is dated but white gloss is still on. Glossed Greys are a bit over anyway.

Viviennemary · 13/10/2017 13:20

I'm not keen on gloss kitchens but you won't please everyone no matter what kitchen you put in. And not keen at all on handleless. I think this style will date quite quickly.

Believeitornot · 13/10/2017 14:25

We had a white gloss kitchen which was easy to keep clean. Until a new cleaner used kitchen spray on it and ruined the finish!! Microfibre clothes with water were fine - they even worked removing a load of grease above the hob.

BeanoNoir · 13/10/2017 14:32

Sorry, people don't know how to use a toilet brush and just guess? What is the correct way? Worried I've been doing it wrong now...

3luckystars · 13/10/2017 15:39

Me too!! I can’t think of an alternative way though?

Anyway, in the process of trying to pick out a new kitchen. We have been saving for ages. Dh loves the handleless, I’m not so sure but am hoping it’s not a big mistake now!!!

How will I know what’s going to date badly? Was there a thread about this, help!

RavingRoo · 13/10/2017 15:43

I love Ikea’s handleless cupboards where you touch and it opens - the posh ones with a groove you pull are just annoying.

5rivers7hills · 13/10/2017 17:04

@3luckystars and @BeanoNoir I know.... how am I doing it wrong? I need to know!!!

MissDuke · 14/10/2017 06:19

Also wondering if I have been using my loo brush wrong all these years!

OP I personally hated my white gloss kitchen that we installed in our last house, but maybe I just hadn't the right knack for cleaning it. I won't ever install gloss again and still am annoyed that I let dh talk me into it!

I wouldn't worry in the slightest about what will 'date' though, if its practical and in good nick it shouldn't matter too much when you come to rent/sell on. I think people get a bit too worked up about things 'dating' - a kitchen won't get changed for at least 10-20 years so of course it will look dated at some stage, as long as you like it, who cares?

My parents recently installed what to some would seem high fashion and will date tomorrow, but my parents had the same kitchen 25 years ago and loved it, so wanted to recreate that in their current home. The kitchen fitter kept on asking where they sure Grin However they are delighted with it. It came round again after 25 years so if you wait long enough yours will always come back into fashion Grin

I think a lot of mumsnetters have the DIY kitchens Luca in Matt white, myself included, it is a brilliant quality kitchen for the price. I also have the dark grey for the island.

MadameJosephine · 14/10/2017 07:02

Dh and I both had exactly the same thought (it's rare!) which was that it reminded us of the kitchens in the councils houses we both grew up in

Me too! The Mam in howdens looked at me like I was crazy when I said I wanted handles for exactly this reason. I’m getting my lovely ‘dated’ grey gloss kitchen fitted today

Spadequeen · 14/10/2017 07:05

We have a cream gloss. I don't understand people saying it's difficult to clean, no it's not! It's the best and easier to clean. If you feel it's aged in a few years time you can just replace the doors

gamerchick · 14/10/2017 07:07

😂 sorry I was having toilet brush rage at the time.

If you ever visit someone’s house and take a dump. Do not use the toilet brush to clean off fresh shit. It’s not what it’s for and leaves it ranced. I feel like I should be writing out instructions and clagging it to the wall. Angry

CPtart · 14/10/2017 07:11

Currently having a winter white gloss kitchen fitted (off white, more of a very pale cream) but will be having horizontal chrome handles to break it up as there's a lot of doors. Looks lovely so far.

3luckystars · 14/10/2017 07:51

Miss Duke what kitchen did your parents get? I'm dying to know what was in 25 years ago and is back in now.

This thread is great. I've decided to go with what I like and what feels good and not care about what's in or out, I'll just pick one I love and go with that.

My big problem is that my husband is insisting on flat slab doors without any grooves. So I feel I'm forced to get a handle less kitchen because handles on flat doors won't work.
I'm getting a bit upset over this kitchen because this is my only chance and he is forcing my hand about a flat door. Maybe I should wait another few months and a new solution will appear.

MadameJosephine · 14/10/2017 08:17

3luckystars plenty of kitchens have handles on flat doors, My was one included. I think they look fine, I think the handleless look only really works in large high end kitchens

3luckystars · 14/10/2017 08:24

Really? You think a handle on a flat door looks ok so?

I saw some in the showroom and I wasn’t loving them, although they were big huge ones so maybe there’s a solution alright if I keep looking.

I’m not criticizing dh, he has cleaning ocd and the current kitchen has all grooves on the doors and looks dirty all the time so I can understand why he wants a flat door but I just want the kitchen to look homely and not too fancy!

I will keep looking, thank you.

MadameJosephine · 14/10/2017 08:52

This is the style of kitchen I’ve gone for 3luckystars they do a handle less version but I prefer it with handles

Is white gloss handleless kitchen naff?
3luckystars · 14/10/2017 08:57

Are you delighted with it?

Good luck with the fitting today, it looks really nice! Best wishes in your new kitchen and thank you for the advice.

dotdotdotmustdash · 14/10/2017 10:07

3luckystars

We have flat doors with a relatively small handle and it looks fine. We wanted a homely look too and I think we've achieved it. A photo of my kitchen is upthread, it's certainly not clinical!

MadameJosephine · 14/10/2017 12:38

Fingers crossed I will be delighted with it when it’s done, the place was like a bomb site this morning!

VivaLeBeaver · 14/10/2017 12:40

I don't think it's naff but it might date. Everyone I know who's had a new kitchen recently has had a white gloss one.
