We are putting our place on the market. Just clearing up the clutter and dressing it nicely and wondering about nice air scents..., anyone have any nice natural recommendations Hmm??

Open windows a crack if it's not too cold. I'd be cynical about the smell of fresh bread even though it is an amazing smell!

specialsubject · 27/09/2017 09:08

Nothing! Strong smell of bread or coffee, let alone stinky 'fresheners' or horrible candles, just shouts ' this house is damp and we want to hide it'.

JT05 · 27/09/2017 09:32

I agree, there’s nothing like fresh air to make a house smell clean. However, I’m rather partial to the smell of washing powder in the kitchen/ utility! Grin

I went to view a house where the owner had obviously just had a plate of kippers! Just don't do that, and you'll be fine.

JoJoSM2 · 27/09/2017 11:15

I used to put a candle on or have reeds. Not trying to hide anything - just creating a lovely ambience.

Maudlinmaud · 27/09/2017 11:18

Electric tart burner with a tart obviously.
So many people here hate scents my dh included but not me. Pick one of the foodie type scents and that will be very welcoming.

AllToadsLeadToHome · 27/09/2017 11:28

Be careful about using artificial perfumes like reeds, Zoflora, Yankee candles etc. as they can give people headaches and make them feel ill. You could lose potential purchasers.

Keep it clean and aired. I used to polish the furniture before viewings but I think polishes have moved from being a nice beeswaxy smell to artificial poisons these days.

If I am near reed diffusers or Yankees I have to leave, same with Zoflora. Makes me feel really ill.

wowfudge · 27/09/2017 12:09

Don't use artificial scents. Or cook anything just before a viewing. Clean and make sure the place is aired - including little used rooms if you have them.

OyyVeyy · 27/09/2017 22:50

Lol @ the kippers!
Yep laundry is s good one!
Yuck Zooflora is a bit toxic smelling IMO

Aerial is the best smelling IMO

kingjofferyworksintescos · 28/09/2017 09:56

Fresh air , open the windows and really air the place , other smells , coffee bread , candles shout out that the place is smelly / damp and you are masking it

TwoKidsAndCounting · 28/09/2017 20:18

Fresh air and fresh laundry

Wingedharpy · 28/09/2017 20:27

I'm partial to a floor mopped with blue Flash floor cleaner myself!

SconNotScone · 28/09/2017 21:33

Rub a little bit of nice smelling fabric softener on your light bulbs, when they are switched on and start to warm up, they'll give off a slight laundry smell. Yummy.

Stellato · 28/09/2017 21:36

I can always tell if someone next to me on the train uses fabric softener. I have to move seats, it gives me an awful headache. And don't get me started on reed diffusers etc, they are a headache in a jar.

Just fresh air is best.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/09/2017 21:38

Put a boiling hot wash on with lots of detergent.

LinaBo · 28/09/2017 21:50

If you have wooden floors, method spray and mop for wooden floors smells wonderful. I also used febreze pet odours because I do have indoors cats (I took them and their litter trays out when we had viewings).

I have some candles but I didn't burn them so they just give off a very soft smell. I occasionally turned the essential oils diffuser on when I was cleaning but it would be off for a few hours before the viewings - with windows open, it would be mild by the time viewings took place. Mind you, we only had 5 viewings, not sure I'd be able to keep up otherwise. Grin

I love Method spray - the honeysuckle garden one is lovely. However I don't like overpowering smells, so what I tend to do is give the floors and surfaces a wipe over using Method, but have every window open as I'm doing it to air the place out. The result is lovely and fresh but no obvious artificial perfume or spray smell.

highinthesky · 29/09/2017 08:10

Just googled Method. I want a spearmint-fragranced toilet!!

Calmanrose · 29/09/2017 08:11

Fresh lavender

LazyDailyMailJournos · 29/09/2017 08:24

High the spearmint is lovely but God it's very, very strong!!

The honeysuckle stuff I love is a limited edition - really wish they wouldn't do this; if you have a nice fragrance why not keep it? I got some odd looks when I went to Tesco last week and filled a trolley and bulk bought as much as I could afford.

highinthesky · 29/09/2017 08:43

Right-o, off to Mr T's Grin

weekfour · 29/09/2017 09:27

I love the smell of laundry powder. I purposefully leave the cupboard open so the utility smells nice.

Woe betide anyone else that dare leave cupboards open. Wink

Ifailed · 29/09/2017 09:35

I wouldn't like it, and would wonder what other smells you were trying to hide (damp etc). As others have said, make sure it's properly aired and go for a neutral smell. Coffee and fresh bread in the kitchen is all a bit obvious now.
