Double yellow lines just put outside my new home

Moved in April. Now double yellow lines have been put outside my house. Today! I could off street park, the council have no worries about this, despite no dropped curve. However, I'm next to a church and people who are disabled can still park on the lines.

What do I do?

Contact the council?

Find somewhere else to park?

There's not much you can do is there? You can't park on the lines, those with a blue badge can (if safe). You'll have to park elsewhere. Our road is also double yellowed, it's a pain in the arse but there's nothing we can do. The traffic wardens do patrol as well.

Get a dropped kerb fitted.

I do have another place to park, but it really peeves me this disabled parking. Because I do know for a fact that those who park there for their yoga are no more disabled than I am. They will use their relatives parking badge. (I know them, because I have helped out at another church in the same religion). It's incredibly cheeky, but they do it.

I spoke to the council and a dropped kerb will not negate the disabled parking. It's not worth the money.

Then report them for improper use of a blue badge

In a way it's actually good because it stops people parking there for the train station. I can have off street parking if I want to, even without a dropped kerb. But still, I'm the only residential property in the street who has yellow lines outside the house.

Please shop the blue badge abusers to the council! I used to drive poor-mobility elderly people about, and so often had trouble finding a blue badge space. Such abusers really enrage me - they deserve all they get, preferably whacking great fines.

I will report. Promise. I think it's a terrible abuse as well. Even when I have off street parked on my property, I have had cars parked in front of me! The cheek of it. I will actually go into the yoga class and shame them if they continue!

Perhaps the yellow lines will stop this. I'm actually feeling more positive about it. (And the traffic is flowing well too!).

I'm not even going to start on the mother and toddler group! Most of the mum's drive from just around the corner and park. I kind of understand

If they truly are using someone else's badge, not within the rules, do please shop them. Its a 2k fine plus potentially loss of the badge, so would stop them one way or another.

I often drop my mother somewhere, then go and park the car as quickly as possible, with her badge i can do this so long as it is my first stop after dropping her off. You might see me, not notice her clinging to a wall, waiting for me to return and think i was using the badge just for myself. If there is someone else with her, I am happy to take the time to park properly. If it's just me, i get back to her as quickly as possible...my heart in my mouth that she will have fallen by then. And no, sometimes a wheelchair is just not suitable...

Off street parking without a dripped curb: i thought that meant that someone might park on the road, blocking your access to your space...

Lots of dripped curbs hereabouts, counts equally for dropped curbs.

How many people are you talking about? There can't be that many people who use their relatives' blue badges to park on double yellow lines so I suspect your issue is with them, rather than the lines per se... That's easy enough to report. Though of course, you don't know they don't have a disability - people with disabilities can do yoga...

If your kerb isn't dropped, then it's not a driveway. Anyone can park there. If you get it dropped, then unfortunately anyone can still park there looks out at where my drive has been blocked by some twat since yesterday but most people will avoid it so it would probably help. I find it surprising that your council doesn't mind about you damaging the pavement by regularly driving over it, though.

Are you sure that the yoga class does not include adaptive exercises for disabled people? I recently did such a class.

As I have said before, even if I get a dropped kerb, disabled parking can still park there. It's not worth it.

Yes, I can use the kerb, it's not that high, to get up to my off road space. The council are not worried.

The path is going to be resurfaced too and lowered even more, according to the council.

Blue badge holders can park for a limited time on double yellows but cannot cause an obstruction. If you are blocked on to your driveway then they would be obstructing the highway. They can block you off it though.

If you apply for a dropped kerb and pay to have it done they will more than likely just take away the lines from outside of your property and start them either side of the drop otherwise it would be a pointless exercise .

I'm at the end of the lines Flora and this was decided before I moved in.

I think I'll wait and see how the traffic flows outside the house. It can be really bad. Stop, starting, engines running. The flow now seems better. But it is a Sunday.

Thanks for all your contributions to this thread. I shall certainly be keeping an eye out for the blue badge holders! Not those who are disabled though. They mainly just come for church service on a Sunday though.

how do you shop them? assume a phone call will not result in the arrival of a council official in time for the returning offender to their car? photos of the person getting in and out of their car with no disabled passenger? this would be very confrontational. or do you tip off the traffic warden? but they would not wait around for them to return without disabled passenger. how do you shop them?

If I'm at home I will walk into the yoga meeting and ask who owns the following car, because they are causing an obstruction on the highway. I will take note of the licence number. I will be a 'trouble maker'

Please do not assume that just because they go to yoga they are not disabled.

I have a blue badge because I cannot walk any distance without pain, however I regularly attend yoga, I would be mortified if someone burst into the class and called me out !
