How can I make a coloured bathroom suite look good?

Is there no point trying?

I am on a bit of a budget but the bathroom is vile. It is a very pale grey, but is fabulous quality. I thought if I re tiled in white? Or am I clutching at straws?

I'm also wary of wasting money when I eventually rip out the suite if I have spent on tiles etc now.

I've read magazine articles on this before and have seen some photos where people managed to make their coloured bathrooms look pretty good.

I think the key was trying to find a contrasting colour that worked well with it, and sort of embracing it. Retiling in white sounds promising. And then maybe choosing accessories that would go with it. There is quite a lot of that 80s sort of 'pale grey and pink' look about at the moment, that might work quite well, with a few pink towels etc?

I think I would be inclined to try using a matching pale grey to the suite for paint and tiles and doing a dark grey slate effect floor to make a blank canvas. You could add a nice green plant, white towels and chrome accessories. It could look very chic...

White subway style tiles with grey grout.

Like this but I probably wouldn't bother with the mosaic. I like the Victorian style border/dado edge though.

Something like these on the floor

BarbaraOcumbungles · 12/09/2017 10:25

Pale grey sounds quite cool tbh!

The problem with white tiles is that it makes the suite look more grey. Try painting the bathroom a mid grey or embrace the grey and go for a nude/pink to go with it.

Love those tiles Duck Off but not if the whole thing is to be ripped out eventually.

I agree with previous poster, white will emphasise the grey.

Once had a peach bathroom suite which we couldn't afford to replace. Depending on what colour tiles / paint we tried, it looked various shades of cream / peach / almost Orange. Ended up with pale blue tiles (sounds hideous I know) but it made the suite look cream and looked very nice in the end.

You need to get a variety of tiles (lots of tile shops will let you borrow tiles or you can buy single tiles for less than a pound) and see which overall effect you're happy with.

You know how we thought feature walls, 60s teak and back ash were gross in the 80s, may be just may be coloured bathrooms are due a renaissance I think it sounds quite nice and has potential.

Retailing will be really expensive anyway, wouldn't bother.

Is it fully tiled it can you paint some walls?

Accessorise with dark grey paint, towels / bath matts and lots of dark green plants.

That's true 7, I got carried away as if OP was keeping it.

It sounds lovely! I'd embrace it. How about green walls, or pale blush pink?

teaortequila23 · 12/09/2017 11:53

Pinterest grey bathroom suite and they give you loads of ideas on how to make it look nice.

hooliodancer · 12/09/2017 11:56

The tiles are the worst bit actually. The walls are only half tiled. It also has some awful boxy inset shelving! It has a beautiful original wood floor though.

Keep it simple. Fortunately grey is in ATM so stile to a monochrome pallet, choose up to day wall tiles (your white subway tiles idea should work well) herringbone tilting is also very in. Keep clutter to a minimum and opt for sleek lines (e.g. Replace shower cultain with a shower screen). Small things can also make huge difference-shutters for example make any room look stylish.

treaclesoda · 12/09/2017 12:06

I posted at the start saying white tiles sounded promising but I had a vision in my head of grey tiles being those 1980s ones in varying shades of grey across the tile. If you could get plain pale grey to match the suite I agree that would be better again.

hooliodancer · 12/09/2017 15:39

I am going to attach a picture! It may give you a laugh...

I just spoke to the builder who said he would have to take the toilet and basin out anyway to re tile, so I suppose we may as well go the whole hog.

See how you feel about it all after a cheap fix of painting out the brown wood in a deep grey?

(whispers...) looks fine to me!!

your problem is more the usual one of a too-small bathroom, which means the sink overhangs the bath and there's no room for a shower screen. That probably means a lot of water has been spilt, so I'd get the bath panel off and see what lurks beneath.

baths on previously damp chipboard are a Bad Thing.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 12/09/2017 17:52

Can the tiles be painted white and the woodwork dark grey?
