Sheffield?

My dh has the opportunity to transfer to Sheffield. We currently live in outer London (he works in central), I'm a teacher in a shortage subject so could potentially find work quite easily even if just supply. Our house is tiny and we have a toddler plus a baby on the way so would be wanting to more soon anyway. Our budget , 475k, for where we currently live could just about buy a 3 bed house but it would be small and we might have to compromise regarding area, garden etc. I just don't want to regret leaving London. I've never even been to Sheffield. Does anyone live there? Is it a nice place to live and raise a family? Thanks.

Sheffield is great. I went to uni there and friends live there. Its no london but i wouldnt want to live in london personally unless i had lots of money.

You will get more for your money no doubt when buying a house.

I dont know much about good areas/schools.

What are you looking for? Lively area (lots of that) or quiet residential?

EsperanzaDesperanza · 30/08/2017 09:29

I live in Sheffield with 2 small children and I'm so happy my children get to grow up here. I came for university 13 years ago and never left.
I love how green and open it is but still a bustling city.
Your budget would get you a lot of house too in the nicer areas.

Susierocks · 30/08/2017 09:46

Thank you. Yes I'm aware we could get a much better house there than here. I guess I want something close to the centre or with a bit of a buzz but also with a community feel, good schools and not too far from green spaces, parks and countryside. My dh would be working near the university I think. Is all that possible?

You want to look in the s10 area. It's close to university, hospitals, has great schools and has lots of green areas and parks.

thecatsthecats · 30/08/2017 09:56

Yup. S10 - Crookes would be perfect. There are houses on top of the hill that face out to the countryside and yet are only a short bus ride (or super cheap taxi) right into the centre. Think max a tenner short taxi at the end of a night out, and even closer to the uni buildings.

It's a very affluent area, but also full of students, somehow. Between the two, there's quite a little community of bars, pubs and shops along Broomhill Road and Crookes Street, so you have plenty on your doorstep even though the city centre is really close too, but I could still walk into open countryside from my 3rd year flat.

Also can be back in London in less than 2 hours by train for visits! Sheffield is great.

Susierocks · 30/08/2017 10:00

That sounds perfect. We're going to visit in a few weeks so will definitely check out that area.

I'm a fan of Nether Edge, Eccleshall Road, Hunters Bar and the surrounding areas. You could go further out towards the peaks a bit and definitely still have all of that.

Tsuipenongin · 30/08/2017 10:02

Sheffield is fab. I'd avoid Crookes though as a family and look further out towards Fulwood, Millhouses or Lodge Moor.

Teaching wise if your shortage subject is Maths or Science, you'd probably find a job pretty easily. If it's MFL it would more difficult.

Sheffield is brilliant, do it! We have just moved out of London and had a similar budget; we would have got sooo much more for our money in Sheffield and have family there but are tied to within commuting distance of London at the moment.

Definitely focus on SW Sheffield (S11 area is lovely) - it's very easy access into the centre and the Peak District.

Sheffield is a very green and liveable city. Great theatres, excellent transport links, brilliant parks (Graves Park is fab for little ones and has a city farm), easy to get to Manchester and Leeds, direct trains to Manchester Airport and East Midlands Airport Parkway), lots of places to eat out, a real buzz to the city....

I would move back in a heartbeat if the right job came up for one of us. Good luck!

PS if you see any houses you like, post links on here and we can help with info on the area!

Thank you! Haven't got around to looking at houses but when we do it would be so helpful to hear about the location, etc.

I was born and bred in West London and headed to Sheffield for university. It's a brilliant city with a great buzz. I moved back to London after I graduated but have now found myself living close to sheffield. There are loads of things for young children to do and you'll get so much for your money. I would absolutely recommend the Eccleshall Road area. There's a lovely park, Waitrose and loads of great restaurants.

WhistlingBrooks · 31/08/2017 11:13

I just wanted to pipe in that I have moved to the S10 area of Sheffield a month back and I would absolutely recommend it.

Very close to the countryside, within a few minutes in our case and good catchment for schools.
Local amenities are a bit sparse, but 5 minutes in the car and we have access to smaller super markets. I work very close to bigger supermarkets so have just made a life style change by doing my shopping at the end of the work day. Please pm me if you need any help or suggestions :)

Do you drive or will be reliant on public transport? I've lived in S7, S8, S11, S10 and S6. Millhouses park, Hillborough Park and the botanic gardens are lovely. I've heard Dore and Totley is a nice place to live too. No to S2, S4 and S5. Crookes and Walkley can be very hilly so not good for the knees and winter snow.

kernowgal · 31/08/2017 14:33

Sheffield is great. I've lived there off and on since uni and the only thing that puts me off moving back is the lack of seaside nearby!

I like Meersbrook/Heeley; Ecclesall Road is lovely but choose carefully as it's very studenty in parts. Up the back of Endcliffe Park is beautiful.

Susierocks · 02/09/2017 13:21

Thanks for all your advice so far. I think we're going to head there in a couple of weeks to have a look around before we make any decisions.

We will obviously look at dh's potential workplace and areas to live (definitely S10 and S11 as they have been recommended so much).

What else would you recommend we do while we're there? (probably around 4 days). Anything which will give us a feel for the place, even better if suitable for a 2 year old!

Thank you

Sheffield has a great sporting facilities too. English institute of sport, PondsForge, great tennis facilities etc. Tonnes of opportunities for children to excel in sports

OCSockOrphanage · 02/09/2017 15:27

My knowledge isn't recent but family members lived there for years so I visited quite regularly and would have moved there like a shot had there been the right professional opportunity. In those days, I would have looked around Hunters Bar and Eccleshall Road; my lot lived in Ranmoor.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 02/09/2017 15:53

Definitely look in S11 and S10, I'd look more Nether Green and Ranmoor in S10, Botanical Gardens, Hunters Bar, Nether Edge, Brincliffe, Ecclesall Road area should all offer you what you're looking for and you'll get a nice house in a good area for your budget.

Sheffield is ace, good luck!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 02/09/2017 15:56

PS There's no h in Ecclesall!

Frouby · 02/09/2017 16:09

Sheffield is lovely. I likè between Rotherham and Barnsley atm but lived between Rotherham and Sheffield for a long time, grew up there.

Loads of family day outs around south yorkshire with a 2 year old. Wentworth Garden Centre isn't far from Sheffield in Barnsley/Rotherham. Nice day out. Graves Park ia lovely in Sheffield. And Clifton Park.i Rotherham.

EsperanzaDesperanza · 02/09/2017 17:48

Graves park, Endcliffe park, Botanical Gardens all big hits in this house (DD is 7 DS is 2). Lovely places to visit without having to go out of the city and all free.
S7/S11 for house hunting Smile
