Sheffield?

My dh has the opportunity to transfer to Sheffield. We currently live in outer London (he works in central), I'm a teacher in a shortage subject so could potentially find work quite easily even if just supply. Our house is tiny and we have a toddler plus a baby on the way so would be wanting to more soon anyway. Our budget , 475k, for where we currently live could just about buy a 3 bed house but it would be small and we might have to compromise regarding area, garden etc. I just don't want to regret leaving London. I've never even been to Sheffield. Does anyone live there? Is it a nice place to live and raise a family? Thanks.

S7 (Netheredge/ Brincliffe Edge) is worth a look as there are beautiful period houses which are cheaper than S10/11, a nice parade of local shops plus near enough to city centre and both universities. Also near the fab gastro Broadfield pub with a myriad of gins and knowledgable bar staff) There is a new secondary school (South West) currently being built on the site of an the old Abbeydale Grange grammar school which would S7 be in catchment.

Also meant to add you can easily get a 4 bed detached in S7 for your budget.S6 is Walkley and also good for commute to universities and a lot cheaper its hilly so great views from houses

Netheredge has a couple of nice places but imo the bottom of it is a dive. It's awful, won't even walk through that part (onto Abbydale).

I personally like Abbeydale and London roads also Kelham Island. I think they have some interesting shops, pubs and eating places. The rents are low in this area do attracts a creative crowd. Yes some of the area is a run down but it reminds me of Shoreditch a few years ago but if you want just a middle class enclave stick to S10/11

Creative crowd- aka pseudo poor hippies.

Avoid at all costs.

I'd move back to Sheffield in a heartbeat. S10 and S11 definitely. I'd be looking at Greystones and Broomhill areas personally.
