Kitchen Plan - Take a look and be brutally honest...

Finally getting the kitchen sorted, currently the kitchen is the other way round (as in it's all along where the bi folds will be and then comes round both side, we have a small utility room that we are knocking down (this leads to a side door which we are blocking up as it leads straight onto the drive and then you have to go round the house through a gate to the back garden - so removing the current window and replacing with bi folds...

I'm about to commit but its lots of money and dont want to get it wrong so what have i missed, dont need etc...

Its a howdens in Clerkwell Dove (or should I go for white) worktops not decided but probably a wood one on the island and something else for the sink.

Come be honest and tell me what you think?

I'd find the worktop a bit tight. Could you move the sink up so you can use the island as prep space too?

stylelostneedsfinding · 23/08/2017 19:13

Actually the sink is wrong as it should only be a 1 1/2 not a drainer on the side.

Do you mean move the hob onto the back wall as well as the sink?

I'm a bit funny and need the lines to match so has to be in centre.

I would remove the dinning table and sofa, turn the island so you can fit overhangs on both sides. It gives you versatility. You can then fit 2 bar stools on each end giving you plenty of convertible space.

I think you should move your job to back wall where the sink is as it will free up your island as a work space/party table. 😊

tentative3 · 23/08/2017 19:46

What are the dimensions of the room?

YorkshireTea86 · 23/08/2017 20:01

I agree it does give a lot of workspace. I think you need at least 1000mm preferably 1200 for prep and serving. If 2 of you use the kitchen at the same time I'd want 2 areas that size. Do you need all the tall units? What are they for (I'm guessing fridge, freezer and larder but you seem to have more) I'd prefer more work surface.

Bearbehind · 23/08/2017 20:03

Honestly, that looks very tight.

If you pull the chairs out, how much room will there be?

The only useable preparation surface looks like the opposite side of the island which is away from the sink and hob.

I'd get rid of the sofa and table and have a breakfast bar or seats at the island.

It strikes me as trying to fit too much into a space that's not really big enough.

coffeecow · 23/08/2017 20:10

I'm unsure about the ovens being next to a wall, my old house had this and I was forever banging baking trays etc into the wall (yours doesn't look as tight of a squeeze as mine was though)
Love the island but not sure how much of it is usable space...

stylelostneedsfinding · 23/08/2017 20:53

Thanks for all the feedback - Room is about 16t by 17ft so not a small space I don't think? Reason for not having seating it their is 5 of us so would have to have 5 seats which would be too much.

The worktop is over 5 x 500mm units so would think that would give enough work space? We won't have a kettle as having a hot tap.

One reason for tall cupboards is the house the boiler and the soil pipe that runs down the wall...

Will get the proper plans tomorrow and upload might be better to see - although maybe turning island round and getting rid of table and sofa would be good don't want it crowded

coffeecow · 23/08/2017 21:05

A round table could seat 5/6 and maybe not be so boxey? Although I saw you said you like lines. Hot tap sounds brilliant.

BunloafAndCrumpets · 23/08/2017 21:43

Looks lovely but pretty tight to me too.. if the kitchen door is fully open it will hit the island. I think you're trying to fit a bit too much in the space. I'd either try and extend out further to accomplish a family living space, or as pp have said move the island and not hve the sofa.

Believeitornot · 23/08/2017 21:47

Can you turn your dining table 90 degrees and have a built in bench along that wall?

I would consider removing the island, have an L- shaped kitchen instead. The room is too small for an island IMO.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 23/08/2017 21:51

Could you post another picture or two from a different viewpoint? I.e. Not from above? That would give people a better idea of space.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 23/08/2017 21:58

Not keen on oven right in corner.

I know you like balance and the design looks pleasing but I don't think it's terribly practical.
The table seems very close to island

Believeitornot · 23/08/2017 22:03

Sorry, to add, I would actually suggest a U-shaped kitchen. Sink remains where it is, hob on the wall where you've put the tall units and oven can go to the left of your hidden soil pipe or under the hob.

Polter · 23/08/2017 22:16

I wouldn't have the ovens so close to the wall, you really need a bit of elbow space both sides for getting big/heavy pans in and out.

Does the door open inwards? And which side are the hinges? You don't want someone walking in the door as you are backing away from the oven, turning to the island, whilst getting a steaming hot turkey out the oven. Nor do people coming in the door want to have to close the door to get to the sofa/dining area.

I would have the kitchen built along the back wall where you've got your sink etc and then across the wall at the top.

HidingFromDD · 23/08/2017 22:21

Are you left or right handed? The oven would be on the wrong side for me

stylelostneedsfinding · 23/08/2017 22:32

I'm right handed - hubby is left...

Totally rethinking now might scrap and start again would photos of current kitchen help?

OP posts:
Believeitornot · 23/08/2017 22:46

Yes share your current kitchen!

Flyfisherlady · 23/08/2017 23:09

Yes. Also, do what you think works for you. It's your kitchen after all. Personally, I would go for either a dining table or the sofa but not both. Also bear in mind that breakfast bars are not actually that comfortable.

SnickersWasAHorse · 23/08/2017 23:16

Photos would help get the scale.

freelancedolly · 24/08/2017 08:27

What are the room dimensions? Unless really quite big I'd get rid of the sofa.

I agree it all looks too bunched up. You need a lot of space to make an island not feel like it's in the way of everything else.

YorkshireTea86 · 24/08/2017 08:27

Yes show us the kitchen now and give us a floor plan with dimensions and where boiler etc is.
We're in the middle of planning ours (hopefully starting next month) and I must have done 20 designs. It's a nightmare! Dh gets a glazed look when I discuss it with him and can't understand why I can't just make a decision and that's it! I keep telling him it's because I don't want to get it wrong when we are spending thousands.Hmm

stylelostneedsfinding · 24/08/2017 10:55

Thanks for all the feedback - gosh it so hard.

The sofa and table are what they have added. All I want is somewhere for us to all sit and eat/chat/homework/ etc. The island for me isn't a deal breaker as dont want to be all sat at the breakfast bar.

The main reason for changing is because you can't get to the garden from the kitchen and it's dark so wanted bi folds to open it up and made sense to move kitchen to back wall. HELP!

Photos' are coming...
