Kitchen Plan - Take a look and be brutally honest...

Finally getting the kitchen sorted, currently the kitchen is the other way round (as in it's all along where the bi folds will be and then comes round both side, we have a small utility room that we are knocking down (this leads to a side door which we are blocking up as it leads straight onto the drive and then you have to go round the house through a gate to the back garden - so removing the current window and replacing with bi folds...

I'm about to commit but its lots of money and dont want to get it wrong so what have i missed, dont need etc...

Its a howdens in Clerkwell Dove (or should I go for white) worktops not decided but probably a wood one on the island and something else for the sink.

Come be honest and tell me what you think?

Get rid of the island and sofa, have a u shape kitchen and a nice big kitchen table in the middle

stylelostneedsfinding · 24/08/2017 11:07

The dimensions of the space once the utility is knocked down, back door blocked up and the bi folds in is

16 Ft by 17 Ft

Hope this helps

Where are the washing machine, etc going to go? Will they be in the new kitchen or elsewhere?

stylelostneedsfinding · 24/08/2017 11:46

In the new kitchen behind the units - the main tumble will go in the garage so just a washer/dryer in the house.

Hmm - I'm not a fan of washing machines in kitchens, especially not if you eat in there because of the noise. There's a lot to be said for a separate utility room. How much space do you gain by knocking down the utility?

stylelostneedsfinding · 24/08/2017 11:57

We gain about 3ft by 3ft but more that we can block up the back door and opens up the whole back wall - we don't have washing hanging around as such so not a major concern for me and we will get an ultra quiet machine.

Can't see how we could move the kitchen around without taking it out to be honest?

I would turn the table around and have a bench seat along the wall so it's easier to walk past
So just chairs on the other side

Could you switch the hob and sink around and then put the ovens below the hob? The holiday appt we just stayed in had practically your exact proposed layout, but with the sink on the island and induction hob with ovens below, I found it worked really well. You could then extend the worktop along to the wall to the right. Are you getting an induction hob? I've got gas but loved the induction hob, it would also increase your worktop space.

Where the tall cupboards wrap around on the left could that run of tall cupboards be shortened so that the table could be turned? I think that would look better and you'd have a larger floor space between the doors and the island.

wowfudge · 24/08/2017 12:44

I can't get my head around the current layout OP - some of the photos (are they photos or cgi?) are the wrong way round. Could you post a rough floorplan of the current layout?

Garliccalamari · 24/08/2017 14:14

The room is small for a dining table and a kitchen island and a sofa. I would lose the island and the sofa. It looks a bit silly to have such a big island and then eat in a cramped corner at a small table. An L shaped kitchen with a decent dining table would be better in my opinion.

stylelostneedsfinding · 24/08/2017 14:24

How would the L work? do you mean coming round the walls or an L coming into the floor space?

Here you got a very rough drawing (not to scale) of the current kitchen

The size is 16FT x 17ft

Hope this helps?

Never thought it would be so hard to get it right with pretty much a square to work with

PMSL at the dog being included on the diagram. Grin

I think losing the utility walls only really gives you the opportunity to put the bifolds in and lighten the room up- it doesn't give you enough room to add an island.

I'd put work tops/ units round all three walls and put the table in the middle.

stylelostneedsfinding · 24/08/2017 16:13

Dog is the most important part :)

Yes think we scrap the island and make it a U shape... the guy at Howdens is going to love me...

Maybe I should have less tall units mmmmmm

I'd move the oven to other bank of high cupboards as having it against wall and near door is a pain.
