How can I make this kitchen LESS modern?!

Acunningruse · 14/08/2017 23:07

We are in the process of buying a new family home which is 99% perfect and ticks every box. It has been recently renovated to a very high standard and is very cutting edge in design, which undoubtedly many people would love but it's just not our taste!
How could I make this kitchen look more warm and family friendly, without getting a whole new kitchen, which would be very wasteful given it's only just been done!
Thanks

Are you able to change the black doors to a warmer cream colour, and change the glass table for a wooden one?

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 14/08/2017 23:11

Errrr. I'm not sure. Would it not nebetter to embrace it?

One thing that might help is to see if you could have the cabinets sprayed. A sage green or white even would look warmer

RatOnnaStick · 14/08/2017 23:11

Honestly? I'd get new fronts and sell the old ones. Gloss black isn't going to be made friendlier very easily.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 14/08/2017 23:11

You can't just sell the fronts though as you have black cladded sides on show

RatOnnaStick · 14/08/2017 23:14

That's true. Maybe just the sides will be OK Confused.

PovertyJetset · 14/08/2017 23:15

Get rid of the lime stripe and accessories.

Maybe tile in a warm blush pink herringbone behind the hob and around.

What's the giant black unit to the left? Can that be dismantled/amen out? If so get some oak open shelves in its place and atore your glasses, serving dishes etc there in a tasteful mush mash.

Poppins2016 · 14/08/2017 23:15

Wooden countertop? New/painted tiles?

SnickersWasAHorse · 14/08/2017 23:15

Have you posted this before? I'm sure I recognise the kitchen.

Unless it was on a 'why won't my house sell' thread. I do remember there being one with a black kitchen.

RoganJosh · 14/08/2017 23:15

I was thinking new doors too. You could replace the end panels at the same time. It would end up more like this

I wouldn't spray brand new cabinets, never looks good ime. I'd go for some greenery - e.g. pots of herbs on windowsill and blond/pale wood dining table, chairs and accessories. I think it could look lovely

Perfectly1mperfect · 14/08/2017 23:16

I really like it but I like modern.

But you could add a rug, cosy window dressings.

PovertyJetset · 14/08/2017 23:17

I'd change the black cabinet to the right of the door and possibly change the lime green. Then see how it looks once you've got your own table in the dining area and some stuff on the worktops. Is it a family house? By the time you've got a few drawings/diaries on a door or two, that should tone it down enough (and v cheaply) for you to see if you can live with it.

Viviennemary · 14/08/2017 23:19

I think it would be quite hard to make it cosy without spending quite a lot. Could you not just like modern. (Sympathies though. I prefer cosy.) Good idea about plants though and pink tiles.

SnickersWasAHorse · 14/08/2017 23:25

Change the tiles and if possible change the worktop to a wooden/wood effect one.

MelsMam · 14/08/2017 23:28

Yanbu to want to 'de-modernise' it. Looks horribly garish - personal preference.

Duck egg blue or dark wood countertops and matt black and white or duck egg blue and white wall tiles? Could you change the door knobs too?

Farfromtheusual · 14/08/2017 23:31

OP I have a black gloss kitchen, with a wooden worktop and cream tiled back splash! I think it's lovely and I hate black gloss kitchens Grin

Poverty's suggestion is also nice!

sparechange · 14/08/2017 23:32

Change the doors and paint the side of the tall black unit in blackboard paint (you might need to stick some lining paper on it first if it's very shiny)
Write on it, stencil chichi sayings on it with chalk markers, make it into a photo board?

Get rid of the fluero green stripe and put in a sage or grey one instead

Acunningruse · 14/08/2017 23:35

Thanks for all the tips! Lots of ideas to research. The tall unit is actually the fridge freezer, with a base and wall unit next to (attached to) it, so if we did get rid the fridge freezer would have to go somewhere.

Do you have a picture of your kitchen, Farfromusual?

Gloss kitchens are ugly mother fuckers aren't they? Why anyone would actively choose to get one is beyond me.

Can you maybe change the doors? or rip it out and sell it?

ftw · 14/08/2017 23:53

Honestly, by the time you've added all your mismatched kitchen stuff, family clutter and stuck a couple of magnets in the fridge, I don't think you'll even notice it.

(But I've been living with a 'must change immediately' kitchen for 5 years now.)

abigailgabble · 14/08/2017 23:56

Yeuch what were they thinking

PickAChew · 15/08/2017 00:00

I think just getting rid of the hideous cheap looking tiles and adding some retro styled small appliances would make a big difference

PickAChew · 15/08/2017 00:10

Just stalked it on rightove and hell it's tacky looking!

The green stripe just looks like it might be a paint job, thankfully. The black gloss against white is what looks particularly bad.

And is there really a window right in the shower cubicle? Shock
