How can I make this kitchen LESS modern?!

We are in the process of buying a new family home which is 99% perfect and ticks every box. It has been recently renovated to a very high standard and is very cutting edge in design, which undoubtedly many people would love but it's just not our taste!
How could I make this kitchen look more warm and family friendly, without getting a whole new kitchen, which would be very wasteful given it's only just been done!
Thanks

I'd probably Change the floor, and paint or tile (not sure what it is) over the green stripe. A better table, or at the least an oilcloth over what's there would help too.

Not knocking it, btw - the space looks great. Have jsut had an acceptable offer on our house and have spent the day stalking rightmove with a Hmm face and nervous guts. We've found 4 houses to view in our chosen area and only 2 of them really tick most of our boxes with the other 2 being a bit too small, one of them lacking parking and the other being a bit too far out of town centre to work with the buses we'll need to catch.

I think new doors/sides/trims and new cooker extractor, maybe new tap, would make a huge difference. A painted light grey or blue for example.

I've had a stalk too. The rest of the house is fine and I can see why you bought it.

The kitchen is definitely not to my taste understatement. It's hard to know what to do with it though. Definitely get rid of the lime green, then perhaps if you paint the rest of the walls a powder blue as suggested by a pp, or soft green and add some other wall tiles it might soften the black a little. I'm not sure but what about a coloured ceiling to counteract the white floor but maybe it would help. See photo?

I think the whiteness of the kitchen really makes the black worse. I think it would be a pain to change the worktop but perhaps changing that monstrosity of a overhead cooker fan might help. Another thing would be to change the floor to a more neutral colour.

Get new fronts, paint the rest, get special tile paint and just go over and make it all white/cream.

Tootsiepops · 15/08/2017 05:36

There are companies that will wrap the units in another colour. Some of the results look pretty decent online.

Stick children's art work on the doors, etc. It will soon soften up. Paint the white wall areas a soft warm grey. Put plants on the window sill. Also, if you can put anything on the top of the fridge unit, stick a trailing plant up there.

They like their masking tape, don't they? Lots of stripes throughout the house! I hate black gloss kitchens (and red ones too), but it would be quite a lot of work and cost to replace all the doors and end panels. Changing the doors alone would make a huge difference though as would changing the white for something softer and less stark. Ask where the kitchen is from.

Intransige · 15/08/2017 07:20

You could put in blinds, and change the hideous extractor to a stainless one. And get rid of the lime green.

I agree that looking at changing the doors and end panels (there are companies that do this) would be most successful.

Otherwise wood, cream, open shelving and soft stuff make things cosier.
The big end panel could have kids art work hung on it easily, or if no kids, hang something else lovely.

There looks space for a wooden shelf where the lime stripe is.

WhoseGonnaDriveUHomePorkPie · 15/08/2017 07:54

It's not a pretty kitchen by any means but it looks newish so would be a shame to rip out completely. The best compliment I can give is that the worktop looks nice which is a huge bonus as that would be expensive to replace. Plus the room looks lovely and light in spite of the black. I'd get rid of the fridge unit definitely, it overshadows the while space and put a freestanding stainless steel one in. Likewise the extractor fan which is abhorrent. Also the lime stripe will have to go - non negotiable!
Then I'd do what others have said and add in some texture and pattern to neutralise the clinical gloss - roman blind, flowers in earthenware jar, a basket with fruit/veg in, large wooden butchers chopping board, vintage cake stand, wall art, etc. If you can fit in a dresser or freestanding unit in the space next to the fridge that might look nice. I think you will learn to like it.

Thanks for all the pictures, I'm confident now we can definitely do something to soften it, I think replacing fridge freezer and the extractor fan and replacing green stripe with tiles would have the biggest immediate impact.
I've removed the picture as it was identifying so here's another without the address.

Gloss black kitchens are never good.

It would look much less "in your face" if you replaces the door fronts and end panels in gloss or matt white or light grey. Probably only cost £500 or so.
