Finally have kitchen plans we like!!

We have been round the houses with the kitchen. Currently we have a kitchen/diner separated by a partial wall that cuts out much needed light from the (north facing ) garden. It's a load bearing wall that's going to be taken out and we also currently have an alcove that's full of the dishwasher/fridge/freezer that will be filled with cupboards and the oven.

The butler sink isn't necessarily staying. At the weekend I saw a Menerva worktop with a large stainless steel undermount sink that I really liked. So we've just got to number crunch and see how much more that would be than wood.

Do you like? We are looking to move in the next couple of years and trying to design a kitchen that would appeal to most 😬😬

The floor will be Kardean, the walls painted white. No tiles needed as there's only a small amount of wall on show.

The sliding patio doors are changing to French doors. Spotlights throughout we think. We were going to have a great io of pendants over the table but I think we're going to have a flat screen TV on that wall and obviously pendant lights would obscure it.

Forgot to add the washing machine/tumble and freezer are in the internal garage that's accessed through the fire door thats to the right of the alcove cupboards. We're going to make it a utility in there by adding some worktops and maybe a sink. The bins live in there too.

Well I love it!

HipsterHunter · 26/07/2017 12:20

What are you doing for extraction for the hob?

EpoxyResin · 26/07/2017 12:22

It looks ace! Are you planning some sort of extractor around the hob or not? I worry about the safety of hobs in peninsulas (less so in islands as they tend to be wider) but enough people seem to have them I guess it's just me. So jealous of your dunno in front of window arrangement!

EpoxyResin · 26/07/2017 12:22

*sink, not dunno! No idea where that came from.

wowfudge · 26/07/2017 12:30

Looks really good, however, does the door on the right in the second picture open inwards or out? I think there is the potential to clash doors when the cabinets in the alcove area are open.

wowfudge · 26/07/2017 12:32

Ducting for an extractor could be run along the beam where the wall has been removed to the outside wall or an extractor fan could be fitted to the wall as a less obtrusive solution.

SleepFreeZone · 26/07/2017 14:49

Oh I'm so pleased you like it. Phew lol

So the extractor is a problem because every alternative is expensive 😬 We are either going to have a remote control ceiling extractor that's inset into the ceiling and the duct will run along the channel in the ceiling or a hob that's got an extractor within it. Those options are thousands though 😳

OP posts:
SleepFreeZone · 26/07/2017 14:50

Another option is a large extractor that's going to obstruct the view which is the least desirable option. Or maybe we'll just open a window instead 😜

How does an extractor work inside a hob? Isn't the point of the extractor to remove the steam/ smells that rise from the pans?

SleepFreeZone · 26/07/2017 14:54

wowfudge we've removed the door you can see to the right of the wall units and left that as just a walkway. That will be finished off nicely with the frame still in place in case the next people want to put the door back. The forefoot is being replaced so that it opens outwards into the garage.

I think it's something like this.

To be honest we had an extractor over the hob on the peninsular in my last place and I didn't find it got int the way or looked bad. I know a lot of people hate them tho!

Bearbehind · 26/07/2017 15:04

I'm no expert but I genuinely can't see how that thing would be effective. Steam doesn't rise from just one side of a pan!

wowfudge · 26/07/2017 15:21

Just stick a kitchen extractor fan in the external wall to the side of the peninsula.

Now I have thought about it, you might want/need an upstand behind the hob because of the doors to outside if that's the main route to the garden.

I don't quite get what you mean about that door - it's in the rhs in the picture but to the left of the units in the alcove as you look towards it, not on the right. What's a forefoot - not heard that before?

If that door separates the utility from the kitchen definitely have a door otherwise you will be eating in the kitchen diner to the background noise of the washing machine.

SleepFreeZone · 26/07/2017 16:07

That's actually an interesting thought to have the extractor on the external wall 🤔 Do you mean the wall to the right of the patio doors? You don't think it needs to be right over the hob to be effective?

OP posts:
SleepFreeZone · 26/07/2017 16:10

So there are two doors in the kitchen. One is the one you see in picture one. That door is in the garage as it was a pain in the arse. We are leaving it off and just making the frame good so it becomes a walk way. We will keep the door though for the next owners in case they want to put it back on.

The fire door is the one you can see in that last photo of the plan. It currently opens into the room. We are replacing it and it will open into the garage.

OP posts:
wowfudge · 26/07/2017 16:17

Ah - understood on the doors. Yes on the extractor - a sufficiently powerful one in the wall will do the job. They are pretty quiet these days too. You will need to clean it from time to time though.

OnePlanOnHouzz · 26/07/2017 16:29

If that hob is a bora - they are usually wider and most often not put in drawers due to the ducting going through the cabinet below.

If you are taking something heavy and very hot out of the oven you have to walk quite some distance over a moan walkway to get to a bit of spare worktop ... sorry - just telling it how I see it. Go carefully with this design.

OnePlanOnHouzz · 26/07/2017 16:36

Moan = main

If the garage still has access to park a car in it - you will be better to keep the fire door on and closed incase the car catches fire - they can do.

SleepFreeZone · 26/07/2017 16:47

Legally I know it has to remain a fire door and it will. It's just going to be shiny new and opening the other way. We don't use the garage for cars though. Too much crap in there 😂

The oven to worktop dilemma is something we've discussed. I've just measured the distance and it will be about 1.5 metres to walk with a hot dish in either direction. Plus it will be across a walkway which is not ideal at all but to have the oven where it is now we will lose lots of work space and it just looks ugly. So we're going for it knowing it's not ideal.

Hmm - I think I'd put the hob in the units opposite the peninsula and swap the dishwasher to the other side of the sink.
