Hmm, thetford has some nice bits that look quite quant but they're both pretty grotty tbh. I used to go out there a bit and loads of the thetford lot used to come to my home town to go out drinking. There was always a lot of scrapping.

It could have changed in the last few years, but we still drive through Brandon often and it's a pretty run down place with not much going for it Sad

I wouldn't want to live there I'm afraid.

Reow · 26/06/2017 19:21

*quaint

katymac · 26/06/2017 19:23

That'll be why the houses are so reasonable then I guess

Poop

Any suggestions as to where I should live?

Depends what kind of place you want. Norwich is great, I'd move back there in a heartbeat. I moved away from Norwich 5 years ago and still go back for the weekend for the pubs/restaurants/theatre. Lovely place.

Other cheap places in the area like Dereham, Attleborough and Watton are pretty similar to Brandon: grotty pubs and kebab shop fights.

Outskirts of Norwich where you could get the train into the city within 15 minutes are nice. Wynondham or Brundell are easy on the train.

EpoxyResin · 26/06/2017 19:42

Location wise does it have to be A11 side of Norwich?

Biscuitsneeded · 26/06/2017 19:45

What are your geographical limitations? I think Bury St Ed's, Sudbury, Lavenham etc all nice

insancerre · 26/06/2017 19:53

Thetford used to be really nice but it's a bit of a dump now
Glad I don't live there anymore
Brandon has even less going for it than Thetford
Bury st Edmonds is nicer
I love Norwich though, it's great

katymac · 26/06/2017 20:26

I need to be halfway between Great Yarmouth & London - Ideally less than 1hr 30 mins from each

So a sort of wodge down the middle with Thetford at the top & Not clacton at the bottom.....maybe - so Ipswich might work or Diss or Sudbury or Chelsford or Colchester

I think I'd go for Bury St Edmunds. Don't know what the trains to London are like, though.

Norwich is great but it's 2 hours to London on the train.

badgercat · 26/06/2017 20:41

Attleborough is nothing like Dereham, Watton & Thetford, much smaller even though there are lots of new expansions going on in the town.

The new estates around the hospital and Queens hills are completely new if you want that sort of thing, do you have a budget ? that might make a difference

PippaFawcett · 26/06/2017 20:43

Do you want to be in a town or would one of the smaller villages be ok?

katymac · 26/06/2017 20:53

Well I've got 200 cash & maybe 230 if I get a small mortgage

2 beds plus outside space to put a garden room/DH's gym

Don't mind quite like a project

Easy access to a town for work
Cycle paths?
Tennis club?
Tescos?

Cambridge? Ely? Both 1hr 30 from Great Yarmouth by road and 45 mins/1hr 15 mins from London by train.

badgercat · 26/06/2017 21:34

Wymondham (windum) might suit you well, no Tesco but the Morrison's is pretty decent and quite a few amenities. It's pretty too!

katymac · 26/06/2017 21:47

I'm looking at both of those thanks

OP posts:
NameChange30 · 26/06/2017 22:29

Cambridge would be completely unaffordable on the OP's budget

Wymondham is too far from London, about 2 hours (same as Norwich - they're very close)

NameChange30 · 26/06/2017 22:31

I reckon Bury SE or maybe Ely, although the latter might be a bit far from Great Yarmouth? The London trains to Ely are good though.

QueenofBlah · 26/06/2017 22:45

How about Diss? London trains stop there and nicer than Thetford but not as expensive as Norwich/Bury.

NameChange30 · 26/06/2017 22:47

It also depends which part of London you need to be able to get to - there's the Kings Cross line or the Liverpool Street line, which are different routes to East Anglia.

katymac · 26/06/2017 22:50

Diss is definitely possible, but a bit far from London - still possible tho'

West End theatres predominantly I guess for London (drive to pitsea or woodside park & park)

Wymondham is out

Another vote for between ely and bury st ed. Thetford and brandon are dumps tbh.

Holdmypoodle · 27/06/2017 09:08

Hi Op, I live in the Ely area and vote here too. It's a lovely place to live and has commuter trains going regularly to kings cross and Liverpool Street. Ely itself may be a bit expensive but there are small villages dotted around on the outskirts which are lovely. We wanted to move to Witchford which is a gorgeous village 2/3 miles away from Ely. It usually has 2/3 bed houses priced 200-230,000. Unfortunately the houses there sell quick so we didn't manage to get one!, but maybe one day! Good luck with your search, I had a fantastic time house hunting around here!

katymac · 27/06/2017 09:24

Are there jobs in ely/thetford? I'll need a little something to keep me going really
Admin/finance type stuff? I will be leaving somewhere where it was 20 miles to any jobs

I'll have a look later on line

NameChange30 · 27/06/2017 09:31

Why do you need to be between Great Yarmouth and London if not for jobs?
