Talk to me about...induction hobs

YorkshireTea86 · 20/06/2017 10:13

So I think I've been converted to induction, looking at opinions and reviews plus a few videos on YouTube.
I'm still slightly concerned about wok cooking and frying eggs if you can't tip the pan but think that the easy cleaning and speed of other things will outweigh these.
However I'm a but overwheled by the ! Do I want a flexi zone? Are slider controls better than the ones you press? Will I need the pause or booster buttons? Confused

Why can't you tip the pan? I do on my induction hob. I have flexi zone and yes you need the boost - i didn't realise any came without. I have had induction in 2 houses so over 9 years now although had to cope with gas when we moved in before doing the kitchen. I'd not use anything else (currently available!) now.

YorkshireTea86 · 20/06/2017 14:57

In my trawling through previous posts on here and house a few mention it turning off or beeping if the pan is tipped. Although they might have been old posts and the technology is better now?
Some come with boosters only on a couple of zones some with them on all.

I love mine so much. So much better than gas to cook on! I wouldn't ever have believed it because I was a real gas fan.

I don't have a flexi zone, I wish I had got one with actually.

I have touch buttons and they are v responsive only issue if you spill a bit of water but you can just wipe it up with kitchen roll.

I have boost on all mine but realistically only use it one one or two pans like for boiling water for pasta or similar.

YorkshireTea86 · 20/06/2017 17:55

I will rule out any without flexi bit then. Just wish you could try them out to see how responsive they are and how hard you need to press! The one I really seem to like the look of is £500 which is a bit more than I want to spend really, especially without having used it before!

We have an induction range. I love it. The hob is so fast and controllable, it's a pleasure to cook on it and I do not miss cleaning the bloody gas hob one iota.

Ours is a Stoves Sterling.

drspouse · 20/06/2017 19:51

Just jumping in to say we have one (Neff I think), I like it but you can't really use 3 or more pans.

We are also really struggling to find a small or medium non stick pans- we got one from TK Maxx, tested it with a magnet, then it was useless!

applespearsbears · 20/06/2017 20:00

I have a bog standard induction job with fan oven from John Lewis, Zanussi I think. Love the instant boost, boiling water in seconds! It does beep at me when it doesn't like something I'm doing but I can cope!

I've found ceramic coated set of frying pans from Argos are brilliant on it and a bargain.

VeuveLilies · 20/06/2017 20:01

I have a Neff one.
The boost you only seem to be able to use with one ring which is annoying. Not sure if it's the same with the flexi?
I can use 4 pans. My John Lewis pans work, so didn't have to replace them.

bouncydog · 21/06/2017 05:35

Neff and it came with a set of pans.

suzyrut · 21/06/2017 09:13

I've recently become a convert to induction and am still getting used to the temperatures which I am finding a bit of a trial after using gas for so long. It seems a bit more variable depending on the particular pan than gas.

We have this one www.johnlewis.com/gorenje-by-starck-is655st-electric-induction-hob/p2457465, it has flexizones which I wouldn't be without for big pans and a boost function which you can only use one one pan on each side at a time iyswim.

We bought some ceramic pans from Sainsburys that got rave reviews and they are good non stick but weirdly they sometimes lose connection occasionally in a way that my cast iron ones don't. I will be buying more cast iron ones next.

Small niggles and I do love it because it is so easy to clean and looks so lovely.

I've ordered a induction range, won't arrive for 3-4 weeks.

What is a flexi zone? And are people saying you can't use all of the zones at once, mine will have 5 but I wanted to able to use them all.

ThePurpleOneWithTheNut · 21/06/2017 09:38

I love mine (AEG). It took me a little while to get used to it because I'd never used one before, but yes I have been v pleased with it and it's so easy to clean.

I can't think of anything that it wouldn't do that a gas one does. Except charring peppers or flambé maybe but I can't say I ever do that sort of thing. The boost is good and a must.

Got all my pans from IKEA and they've been excellent (and affordable Smile)

One thing I would look for next time is to either have a protective frame around the hob or to have it completely seamlessly flat to the worktop. Mine is raised up about 2/3 mm. I suppose this is the case with many, but the edge can be vulnerable to getting knocked.

You don't need to press the controls hard or anything to use. Mine slide and are very sensitive. Even if the hob gets a bit splashed with food/oil or your hands might have food on them from cooking, the controls still work ok.

YorkshireTea86 · 21/06/2017 09:44

It's an AEG one I really like the look of. Also have Whirlpool, Zanussi and Hotpoint ones on my list!

We've had ours since Christmas and I absolutely love it. It's an Ikea Hogklassig, has a flexi zone etc. It's 78cm too which gives plenty of room for a few pots and pans.

YorkshireTea86 · 21/06/2017 10:03

we can only fit a 60cm one in and looked at ikea smaklig or otrolig but don't like the fact we can't get any reviews. dh likes the fact they come with 5 year guarantee

Chloe1984 · 21/06/2017 11:20

I've not had a problem with wok cooking or tipping frying pans for a few seconds. So nice being able to clean it easily and heats up very quickly also (Neff, but can't remember what model top of my head)

Tulips2lips · 21/06/2017 11:28

I have smeg and it's not a good one

drspouse · 21/06/2017 14:51

I think when we are struggling to use more than 2-3 rings is when we are trying to have one on Boost and the rest on high.
You can have more than two on low/med. But we have only just got it so we are learning.

I've been looking for non stick pans again. We have some Le Crueset so would love to get those but £££. I'm wary of getting them blind though after our TK Maxx experience and also we had a couple of Circulon pans, which are supposed to be OK, but they weren't. ThePurple, do Ikea do an induction friendly non-stick pan?

YorkshireTea86 · 21/06/2017 16:18

Ikea seem to do non stick frying pans for induction but don't think they do saucepans.
I don't think we would need all the hobs on boost at once, but don't want to be restricted which ones I can boost if I'm boiling veg or potatoes etc.

OP posts:
ThePurpleOneWithTheNut · 22/06/2017 08:58

Yes IKEA do non stick induction friendly frying pans, I've got two and they've lasted years. You can also get lids with a fold flat handle which makes storage easier.

Their induction friendly saucepans are also great too. I got mine a few years ago. They're a slightly different style now but essentially the same. My saucepans are not non stick. I wondered about that at first but I've had no problems ever getting them easily clean.

knockknockknock · 22/06/2017 09:09

Mine is AEG and I can boost all four bits but no idea if I've got a flexi zone - just off to google what one is Smile
