Kitchen Lessons Learned - The Result!

I spent hours poring over the Kitchen Lessons Learned thread, and six months planning our almost-finished kitchen. This is what I've learned...

  • It was worth taping up the floor like a crime scene to work out what layout would work best for us
  • Ditto writing on the plan where everything would go, including sockets
  • You can save a lot of money by shopping around and project-managing it yourself
  • Researching appliance reviews was time well spent, as well as finding a brilliant kitchen fitter whom DH and I are both slightly in love with
  • Great things to have are: Two dishwashers (with a little sign we've put on the handle to remind us which is the 'clean' one), a boiling water tap (we went for this one, as it's guaranteed to be 100 degrees: www.hyco.co.uk/products/boiling-water/zen), deep pan drawers with a hidden drawer, granite worktops with undermount stainless steel sinks; an appliance garage with a tambour door (but be careful which tambour door you buy, the first one we had scratched easily because it was basically plastic with a coating sprayed on, we've changed it now for a solid metal one)
  • I wish I'd thought to have: a plug socket for phone chargers hidden in a drawer
  • I also wish we'd found a decorator in advance rather than put ourselves under pressure to paint the new kitchen walls and ceilings ourselves over a weekend
  • Setting up a 'field kitchen' in the garage with a camping stove, kettle, microwave and slow cooker kept us fed and watered during over a month of work (we had walls knocked down)
  • It's easy to sell your old appliances on Gumtree
  • It's worth spending time and money on great lighting - I love the plinth lighting, and we have LED spotlights which we can 'zone' for different parts of the open-plan, and also dim in the dining area

We bought the kitchen from DIY Kitchens, who were excellent. I probably wouldn't have considered them if I hadn't seen recommendations on Mumsnet. The quality is as good as much more expensive kitchens, and they were easy and pleasant to deal with. We wasted a lot of time looking elsewhere first.

We had our kitchen from DIY kitchens and oneplanhouzz designed- delighted with the results!
Looks like an high end kitchen - second suggestion to ask for oneplanhouzz advice

ihatethecold · 24/11/2017 17:05

How did you get in touch with oneplan?

Ifonlyiweretaller · 24/11/2017 22:45

The website is called Houzz. I read about them on MN last year, and still have the name of a lady called Karen who was in touch with me about redesigning a bedroom into a dressing room.

Nearly a year down the line I still haven't had time to do anything about it (sorry Karen!) but will definitely be in touch with her/them in the new year to move it forward. (

ihatethecold · 25/11/2017 07:26

I know that website. I didn’t realise there were kitchen planners I could engage with.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/11/2017 09:16

Ihatethecold apologies if I'm misremenbering, but I think you have a child in the same secondary school as mine. If so, yiu must be rekativey local to me. I know an excellent kitchen designer who lives in Bourn and can PM you her context details if you are interested?

Sorry to derail thread slightly.

I used MN for kitchen advice when we were planning a new kitchen and it was invaluable. Lots of things I wouldn't have thought of. The only mistake we made was not putting in enough drawers.

I did listen to advice about induction hobs and went for one. It is amazing.

I’m also planning to go down the Oneplan and diy kitchens route. Although dh isn’t as keen - says “another thing off that bloody mumsnet”!

TeamRick · 25/11/2017 12:30

Just installing our DIY kitchen at the moment, we planned it ourselves using the graph paper & cut out units supplied by DIY! So far I haven't had any ' bugger why is that there' moments! Everything seems to be working!

We did spend hours though doing the 'what happens where' so dishwasher close to plate & cutlery storage, hob opposite sink for draining, space to put down hot things out of the oven! Not that the hob or ovens are connected yet! 😀

You can also get Wickes or someone to plan a kitchen for you then send the quote to DIY kitchens to match!

They are really really helpful.

TeamRick · 25/11/2017 12:32

Kitchener exactly the same as you by the sounds of it! I also spent hours on here reading kitchen threads! 😀

ProfessorLayton1 · 25/11/2017 14:53

I spent ages reading the kitchen thread - made notes as I went along, decided what would work for us a family, how I cook( I don’t need three ovens, warming drawer etc) had one plan design my kitchen and save a fortune..
Looks like an expensive kitchen but did not cost an arm and leg...
My DH does not argue if I say that this was recommended by MN anymoreWink

ihatethecold · 25/11/2017 15:31

Thanks Emma.
That would be useful.
Wickes have done a design for me which I’m happy with and want to recreate with DIY kitchens.
But it always useful to have someone else critique it and maybe make it better.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/11/2017 17:43

Hi Ihatethecold I've sent you a PM

ihatethecold · 25/11/2017 18:12

Thanks Emma. It’s so tempting to try work out who you are. I do have my suspicions from your user name 😂

EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/11/2017 10:57

Ooh, ihatethecold that's intriguing. I don't mind if you do know me irl, you are welcome to ask.

HomeExtender · 26/11/2017 16:37

Go on Houzz and in the search box type 'OnePlan' & click on the name in the 'Find a Pro' section.

Thanks. I did look on Houzz earlier but couldn’t see how to find them.
