Kitchen Lessons Learned - The Result!

I spent hours poring over the Kitchen Lessons Learned thread, and six months planning our almost-finished kitchen. This is what I've learned...

  • It was worth taping up the floor like a crime scene to work out what layout would work best for us
  • Ditto writing on the plan where everything would go, including sockets
  • You can save a lot of money by shopping around and project-managing it yourself
  • Researching appliance reviews was time well spent, as well as finding a brilliant kitchen fitter whom DH and I are both slightly in love with
  • Great things to have are: Two dishwashers (with a little sign we've put on the handle to remind us which is the 'clean' one), a boiling water tap (we went for this one, as it's guaranteed to be 100 degrees: www.hyco.co.uk/products/boiling-water/zen), deep pan drawers with a hidden drawer, granite worktops with undermount stainless steel sinks; an appliance garage with a tambour door (but be careful which tambour door you buy, the first one we had scratched easily because it was basically plastic with a coating sprayed on, we've changed it now for a solid metal one)
  • I wish I'd thought to have: a plug socket for phone chargers hidden in a drawer
  • I also wish we'd found a decorator in advance rather than put ourselves under pressure to paint the new kitchen walls and ceilings ourselves over a weekend
  • Setting up a 'field kitchen' in the garage with a camping stove, kettle, microwave and slow cooker kept us fed and watered during over a month of work (we had walls knocked down)
  • It's easy to sell your old appliances on Gumtree
  • It's worth spending time and money on great lighting - I love the plinth lighting, and we have LED spotlights which we can 'zone' for different parts of the open-plan, and also dim in the dining area

We bought the kitchen from DIY Kitchens, who were excellent. I probably wouldn't have considered them if I hadn't seen recommendations on Mumsnet. The quality is as good as much more expensive kitchens, and they were easy and pleasant to deal with. We wasted a lot of time looking elsewhere first.

Looks great! I've got that fridge and can confirm that it is still da bomb 4
Years later.

kitchener · 07/10/2017 09:30

The fridge is the same as the one in Doctor Foster's house in the TV drama btw - but hers was covered in fridge magnets Wink

Which fridge is it? Looks wonderful. Is there a decent fridge area?
I'm thinking of dropping off at the DOT kitchen showrooms on the way to a weekend in York. Our kitchen is six months off yet so do you think it's worth looking at?

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 07/10/2017 09:41

What are you finished dimensions @kitchener? Always interesting to see what people can fit in a space that looks similar to ours!

kitchener · 07/10/2017 09:44

It's this fridge/freezer - huge, and I love the freezer drawers which make it easy to access things.

It's about 2.6 x 3m, but the corner behind the hob is angled so it's not the full square meterage iyswim. The hallway is behind that angle, which originally was a wall and a door.

Where the breakfast bar is was also a wall.

Ooh no, not the same then - ours is a Fischer and paykel. But same design/proportions.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 07/10/2017 09:52

Wow, same dimensions as our existing kitchen but yours looks huge!

kitchener · 07/10/2017 09:53

And, beyond the wall radiator is a small utility area in a side extension, 1100mm wide with two floor cupboards and two wall cupboards above. You can't see it in those pictures.

The toaster and coffee machine live there, with groceries and some crockery stored in the cupboards.

Wow you must be delighted. We are planning a new kitchen at the moment too and I hope I am as pleased at the end of it all. Thank you.

kitchener · 07/10/2017 09:54

Knocking the walls down and getting rid of one of the doors made a huge difference to the space. I wish we'd scraped together the money and done it years ago - it's changed the way we live.

Gingerandthebiscuits - I didn't include the utility area in the dimensions I gave - the wall leading to that was the original outside wall of the house.

Is your washing machine in the kitchen or put in utility?

kitchener · 07/10/2017 10:33

There's another utility area to the left of the one you can just see and through a door - the washing machine and tumble dryer are in there (with a door to the garden). We haven't changed that bit at all, it has some Ikea units and shelves.

I’ve also got that fridge. Love it.

GladitsFfriday · 10/10/2017 00:17

Just in the process of planning out our new kitchen. Also thinking we will
Order from DIY kitchens. I love the look of the deep pan drawers with the Hidden drawer but isn't it annoying that when you want to get to your cutlery that you have to open two drawers?

kitchener · 10/10/2017 12:39

Not a problem with the drawers - I don't even think about it. We upgraded to soft-close which might help.

I can't figure how to bookmark this and the MN search function is useless, hence the post!

ihatethecold · 22/11/2017 18:49

I’m going to go the diy kitchens to get my kitchen. The builder needs to brick up my patio doors first and replace with windows.
My quote from Wickes was 10.5 k

I really love the corner larder cupboard from Wickes/DIY kitchens.

Did you visit the showroom op?

ihatethecold · 23/11/2017 12:55

@kitchener

Please come back.

Kitchener · 23/11/2017 15:39

Hello! No, we didn't visit the showroom - we live a long distance away. But we did order door samples.

Thanks for replying. Did you find it easy to plan your kitchen?

HomeExtender · 23/11/2017 21:04

My kitchen is from DIY too. It was planned by OnePlanOnHouzz (a member on here & on Houzz) who did an excellent job.wiuld definitely recommend checking her out :)

We have:

  • an induction hob with Ikea pans - they are the Ikea 365+ range which were recommended on Mumsnet
  • a walk in larder that also houses the toasters
  • a microwave in a cupboard
  • two sets of pan drawers (3 drawer configuration) under the hob with the cutlery in the shallow top drawer
  • two sets of deep pan drawers (2 drawer configuration) in the island, both with hidden drawers - one of the deep drawers is a charging drawer for iPhones/iPads with 3 double sockets/3 double USB points

Would definitely recommend DIY, we visited the showroom twice when visit family up North. Check out the online showroom tour & also the real kitchen photos section.

Good luck!!

HomeExtender · 23/11/2017 21:07

Lovely kitchen kitchener:)

Kitchener · 23/11/2017 21:44

Thank you homeextender - we love it!

ihate - DH did the planning, but only after we spent months thinking about what we wanted. He printed DIY Kitchen's grid and units, drew the floor plan on it and played around with it. The company and our fitter double-checked it.

A good kitchen fitter/builder is worth their weight in gold - ours spotted a few things we hadn't spotted.
