Granite or quartz?

I'm so confused. Ideally I want something that

  • reasonably light in colour
-doesn't stain from tea being made constantly on it (and my dh will never be trained into doing it on a tray)
  • I can just put pans straight onto it
  • I can clean quite harshly if necessary

I was thinking that quartz was more suitable but dh is convinced it will chip. Any advice?

Apollo slab tech. No chipping, no staining. Easily buff any marks anyway if necessary though haven't needed to. Cheaper too. But if you want shiny and sparkly then go for one of the others.

We have a black quartz and it's very hard wearing - I don't put pans straight on it however my kids play with their toys at the breakfast bar and no scratches or marks yet a year in.

I wouldn't have granite. The emit radon, a radioactive gas. Not good for the health.

wowfudge · 05/06/2017 07:26

Westray that is just scaremongering.

Westray · 05/06/2017 07:37

Fine - go ahead. I wouldn't have granite worktops.

RaspberryPi1 · 05/06/2017 08:20

More likely to have exposure to Radon through the soil under your house than a granite worktop!

The suggestion a granite worktop will emit radon at levels which will be damaging to your health when there is background radiation from many materials in the average home is scaremongering.

Our builder was telling us horror stories of tea stains on quartz; true stories from kitchens he's installed apparently, but I haven't heard anyone on here ever mention it. Perhaps noone has white/pale grey quartz?

I've had white quartz with (sparse) grey marbling in it for 6 months. Tea and coffee is spilt on it at least 4 times a day and sometimes left for hours but I haven't had to break out the Barkeeper's friend yet. It just wipes off.

nemno · 05/06/2017 21:04

Oh and I tested my samples with the same as Hunky and the pure white one was fine too.

renomom · 05/06/2017 21:11

I have full white quartz (Samsung) nothing at all stains it but tin foil marks it horrendously! You can't put it anywhere near it.

Mustang27 · 05/06/2017 21:13

Granite is a nightmare to keep clean looking it needs proper elbow grease and polishing. My Mil has it I really dislike it. Cost a fortune as well.

TaggieRR · 05/06/2017 21:15

I have white Quartz- left tea stain on it for 2 weeks (accidentally missed it during pre holiday clean). Got it out with Barkeepers friend! Nothing else has come close to staining it!

ImListening · 05/06/2017 21:26

What's quartz like with staining & heat? Redoing my kitchen & looking at quartz. Had granite in my old house I loved it! White vinegar once a week kept it sparkling.

Mustang27 · 05/06/2017 21:44

I'mlistening

Il let my Mil know about that, honestly I can barely look at it it just gives me the heebs, her house is really clean. The granite just isn't looked after correctly, she just wipes it over with a cloth and some antibacterial cleaner and it goes all streaky.

ImListening · 05/06/2017 22:01

It's cheap as well Grin

curcur · 05/06/2017 22:14

I have white speckle quartz, seems impossible to stain or chip. Epoxy - that sounds like corian that the builder was talking about.

llhj · 05/06/2017 22:16

I have silestone, amazing stuff.

KatharinaRosalie · 05/06/2017 22:18

I have granite and love it, no stains after several years and yes you can put hot pans on it without any issues. As for keeping clean, mine is matte, not shiny. No streaks. I can imagine that a shiny one is a nightmare and every water droplet would show up.

ArgyMargy · 05/06/2017 22:27

I love my granite, it looks and feels gorgeous. Had it 3 years and never worried about cleaning it - just wipe clean as normal. No chance of chipping. I think you have to spend a decent amount to get a good granite worktop - I suspect those who are unhappy with theirs have got inferior quality product. I do however avoid putting hot pans on it.

Allthebestnamesareused · 05/06/2017 22:30

Canadian white quartz here. No staining (3 boys and dh proof!). Cif recommended by high end suppliers as regular cleaner.

Also advised that the paler a granite the weaker it is and harder to have larger surface.

clockwotch · 06/06/2017 13:15

I'm still not sure Grin I'm assuming quartz is better if you want a thinner worktop?

Not granite, it looks lovely but you have to be careful about scratching it so no abrasive cleaning and no hot pans as it can crack (that's what I was warned about anyway). Looks lovely though 😊
