Would you miss kitchen drawers?

I'm desperate for a dishwasher and the only place it'll fit is where 4 drawers are under the sink. These are the only drawers in the kitchen.

At the moment we use the top one for cutlery and we don't really use the other 3.

Due to the location we could pull the drawers out, cut and sand the skirting and put a dishwasher in. We could put the cutlery in a cupboard.

Would you miss drawers or prefer a dishwasher space? I'm just thinking about resale.

Drawers are a must for me, a dishwasher too.

Ginfiend · 01/06/2017 17:18

If you don't use 3 out of the 4 drawers, get rid!

Dishwasher trumps un-used space!

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/06/2017 17:19

If it was a choice between dishwasher or drawers then dishwasher wins.

However if designing from scratch then a few deep drawers over all cupboards because you can see what you've got.

Moresaltedcaramel · 01/06/2017 17:19

I need drawers and a dishwasher.

Flamingale · 01/06/2017 17:19

My kitchen is tiny so I don't have room for a dishwasher. I have one set of drawers like you and really like them. But I would love a dishwasher more I think.

Also a lot of mumsnetters on here would think the world has stopped spinning if they can't have a dishwasher.

I think your idea is a very good one for a resale point of view. But more importantly if that is the best solution for you, go ahead with it!

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/06/2017 17:21

We had a kitchen designer who insisted we couldn't have a kitchen without a drawer so he insisted on putting one under the oven. At ankle height. For cutlery apparently, but who's going to lie on the floor to get a tea spoon?

We used to keep our cutlery and utensils in a couple of jars on the worktop.

TeachesOfPeaches · 01/06/2017 17:22

My kitchen has NO drawers. Took some getting used to.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/06/2017 17:22

I lived without a dishwasher for years. My life has much improved since we got one :)

BuzzKillington · 01/06/2017 17:23

I'd give up anything to have a dishwasher, so yes.

We have the really wide, pan drawers and we'd struggle to do without those.

OublietteBravo · 01/06/2017 17:25

I have lots of drawers and no dishwasher. I wouldn't swap. I might get rid of a cupboard in exchange for a dishwasher though.

sandgrown · 01/06/2017 17:27

Not had kitchen drawers for 15 years and I hate it! Can't wait for a new kitchen. I have nowhere for cutlery and tea towels etc.

peonyinparadise · 01/06/2017 17:29

Dishwasher wins.

FadedRed · 01/06/2017 17:31

Both are possible - see picture. You can retrofit these drawers into an existing cupboard. This was from the Swedish place. (Please ignore random cupboard mess) Grin

OMG! I've never considered getting rid of drawers to fit in a dishwasher.

We've got 3 drawers - 1 for cutlery, 1 for junk, 1 for pans. I could totally see us doing without them if I could have a dishwasher.

I assumed we didnt have enough space but you've got me thinking now...

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/06/2017 17:33

Or put a dish drawer in and keep a drawer above? Or even put it under the sink.

They're pricey but worth it.

Mascaraandrum · 01/06/2017 17:34

My flat has no kitchen drawers and its a nightmare ,even though i have cutlery baskets etc its just so annoying having nowhere to put bits and bobs

PuckeredAhole · 01/06/2017 17:36

We have enough cupboard space, so I'd just put the cutlery tray thingy in one of the head height ones or even have a tabletop cutlery box. There are a few nice ones online.

We are a family of 4 and I wash up 4 days a week term time and 6 days a week in the school holidays. I need to convince my dh because I'm losing between 3/4 hours a week I'd rather spend doing something else.

I think dishwasher trumps drawers unless anyone has any reason this is a heinous crime

By the time we move the kitchen will be 8 or more years old, so the new buyers might want a new kitchen anyway and this is all a moot point. I just want my kitchen to suit my lifestyle.

My kitchen is tiny - I can stand in the middle and touch all the surfaces!

It's only big enough for either a dishwasher or a washing machine so the washing machine is in a built-in cupboard in the bathroom.

Is that a possibility for you, OP?

PuckeredAhole · 01/06/2017 17:39

Hey faded I thought about cutting down the old drawers and fitting them into a narrower cupboard space. Unless Swedish Place has drawers that would already fit.

Yes it was an epiphany for me pp. That's how desperate I am for a dishwasher. I have even considered a table top dishwasher!!

PuckeredAhole · 01/06/2017 17:41

Nowhere else for a huge home applicable unfortunately. I've thought about this from many an angle. I even thought about a slimline, but the measurements don't add up Sad

NotMeNoNo · 01/06/2017 17:51

Have you another unit the same with you can transfer the drawers over to? Most buyers would expect at least one drawer unit.
Alternative is to refit a cupboard interior as a pull out with interior drawers behind. Both are useful!

SwedishEdith · 01/06/2017 17:52

Depending on the style of your kitchen, you could do something like this for the cutlery.

blankface · 01/06/2017 17:52

In some of our under-counter cupboards, I have plastic storage boxes without lids, which I pull out and use like a drawer. So much easier than trying to find something at the back of the cupboard.

2ducks2ducklings · 01/06/2017 18:01

The dishwasher will always win! You could buy those little pots to keep the cutlery in.

CocoLoco87 · 01/06/2017 18:47

Dishwasher trumps drawers, it will change your life!! That said, I wouldn't like my cutlery just on the side in a caddy, even a naice one. It will get greasy etc when you cook. They must do a covered box or something you could get?
