Gas or induction ??

jigster01 · 09/05/2017 23:21

I have always preferred gas and I suppose would prefer a gas hob now but for all those that feel the same as me but went with induction (because it's the here and now) do you regret it or would you recommend it ? I know it's popular on MN but for gas fan opinions really thank you

I always preferred gas to electric hobs, even ceramic hobs. Induction is the business though. Very controllable, fast and clean.

MacTaylorsSecretWife · 09/05/2017 23:27

Induction. I used to hate cleaning the gas hob now it's just a quick wipe down and done.

jigster01 · 09/05/2017 23:33

Every showroom we have been in , induction has been the one that they assume I want ...Dh does breakfasts every weekend for 6+ people and he would prefer induction due to the easy wipe clean ...I must admit I am being swayed ...
Another unrelated q ... apparently there is only one type of integrated t/ dryer( not condenser) by white knight selling as caple and CDA ,we were told these aren't great...anyone have experience..should add ,don't want to go more than £350 ish ...thanks wow

Remember you'll need special pans for induction - do you want to replace all your pans ?

fairislecable · 10/05/2017 05:36

We have just changed from gas to induction. It is wonderful to keep clean and the controllability is outstanding.

BUT we have a large cutlery drawer underneath and apparently I cannot keep metal items in this drawer (reaction to magnetic).

Only found out AFTER fitting when reading the manual - this is not good.

OnePlanOnHouzz · 10/05/2017 05:55

The 'no metal in drawer under) isn't a common statement in instruction manuals that I've ever come across So I'd be interested to know which make you have please Fairislecable so I can make a note to suggest people avoid it in drawer situations !

You should be able to fit a deflector (or even an MDF sheet) to the underside of the worktop to maybe then allow metal items in your drawers ?

To check if your pans should work with induction - see if a fridge magnet sticks to the bottom - if it does - it will most likely work on an induction hob.

fairislecable · 10/05/2017 06:00

Never thought of a deflector sheet, I will definitely look into that. Although there is not much space between bottom of hob and drawer.

It is a Miele.

jigster01 · 10/05/2017 06:18

No one has mentioned that before fair thanks....
Any comments about the tumble dryer ? Howdens do one but I know they aren't the best quality ,but maybe as good as white knight? Builder will give us his full discount

We didn't need special pans at all - we have a mix of stainless steel and cast iron and they all work fine. We had one small aluminium pan that won't work, but that's it.

TheNumberfaker · 10/05/2017 06:46

We had to get new pans when we moved to a house with induction - well worth it. Quick, safe and soooo easy to clean. Love it!

mum2015 · 10/05/2017 07:02

gas hob fan here who bought induction hob. yes good control and easy cleaning etc. i am sure lots of people will tell you merits so i will only list down small things that i noticed.
most of stainless steels pan work, but to get best results use the pans with heavy bottom and even better if it is all cladded tri-ply type pan. for cooking anything dry, it is same as gas but if you want to do a stir fry like in wok, closest solition is use really wide heavy bottom pan.
when cooking sauces, you will notice that bottom if pan heats and even in good tri-ply the sides are much cooler. the sauce bubbles and splatters more than how it does in gas so need to use lesser heat settings. for the control bit yes only few seconds to go beep- beep-beep high to low but still knob was quicker when there was something about to spill!

ParadiseLaundry · 10/05/2017 07:04

I've just had this dilemma with the oven as I thought gas would look better but like how easy induction was to clean. We went induction. I had no idea we would need new pans. DH will go mad!

tiba · 10/05/2017 07:31

We have induction with cutlery drawer underneath and no problems there

OnePlanOnHouzz · 10/05/2017 08:03

Re TD - sometimes it's just as easy ( and can be really convenient) to have a pair of washerdryers instead of a washer and separate dryer even more so when integrated !

Crikeyblimey · 10/05/2017 08:11

We have a big cutlery drawer under our induction hob - not a problem at all. I love it. Particularly love that each 'ring' can have a timer set so when boiling eggs / making porridge etc. We can set the timer and let it get in with it.

Didn't need new pans either as the ones we already had were ferrous metal.

Jennifaerie · 10/05/2017 08:24

I have a pan drawers under my induction and keep my cutlery directly under the hob. Never had a problem.

QuitMoaning · 10/05/2017 08:35

This thread has been excellent for me as about to get induction hob installed in new kitchen. Will check about depth of hob as well to ensure we can get cutlery draw below.

I absolutely love our induction hob. It was only a cheap one too but does everything it needs to!

specialsubject · 10/05/2017 09:20

Marmite question - but it was a happy day here when the terrible electric hob went and we got gas via an LPG bottle.

Also much cheaper to run, with electricity unit prices up 30%. £35 gas bottle lasts a year of twice daily cooking.

AnnieOH1 · 10/05/2017 09:29

I bought a single induction hob from Lidl to try out and am looking to upgrade my main hob now. You get all the control of gas (that you don't with other electric hobs) but it is so much faster to heat/reduce heat. I don't think I've used my gas hob in a year!

Melstarrynight · 10/05/2017 09:33

I switched from gas to induction last year with a new kitchen. It was a great decision. Only needed to replace one frying pan. It's also great to keep clean. The only thing they aren't good for is using a wok so think carefully if you like to use one.

CountryCaterpillar · 10/05/2017 09:37

Special I'd definitely prefer gas to an electric hob, but prefer induction to gas

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 10/05/2017 09:38

gas.....always gas.

You are never more than a box of matches away from hot food!

Aeroflotgirl · 10/05/2017 10:22

Induction, clean, safer and easy to use. Whenever I lit my old gas stove, I always thought I was going to blow the house up.
