Is a storm porch important to you?

Am currently doing up my home (slowly) as looking to sell in the next couple of years . Front doors are currently wooden . Am looking at replacing the internal front door with a rock door and possibly just removing the outer porch doors.

Would this put you off? Do people prefer porches?

Do I need to just replace both doors with UPVC?

I personally like the look of some of the houses on the street with just a single door and small covered porch but wondering what others think.

Thanks

And the outside - so windows all around

Is a storm porch important to you?

I had an open porch and put a door on it to close it in. It didnt cost a hideous amount.

Even as a big enough fan of having two front doors to go to all this trouble, lack of porch would only put me off if the front door went directly into living space.

I wouldn't buy a house with an enclosed porch

if you can get a recommendation for a local carpenter, you could find out the price of a hardwood frame and door. If it has weather protection from an open porch it will easily last 100 years and depending on the age of your house may look more in keeping.

One of my pet hates is porches, I think they are so naff. I would definitely remove one.

NewPantsforaNewYear · 25/04/2017 17:28

I definitely prefer the look of open porches.

What is a rock door.

What's wrong with porches? Honestly don't understand why anyone would feel strong enough to take against one!

PossumInAPearTree · 25/04/2017 18:20

I prefer an open porch without the outer door.

Punjabi-Standard porch with those two little narrow doors would drive me insane. Squeezing past with shopping bags, buggy, bikes, suitcase. Squashed in there while you open the next door.
And two sets of locks?
And they are alway cobwebby and not very clean. And they attract junk, like umbrellas and wellies, and some people put coats on there too, so even more squashed.
I'm not very tolerant these days, I need things to make my life easier, not harder.

We moved last year from a 1900ish terrace with porch to a new build (no porch although some other houses on estate have storm porches) - didn't really think about it at the time but do miss having that space to dump store shoes, assorted garden toys etc. But I wouldn't die in a ditch over it to be honest..

SwedishEdith · 25/04/2017 20:09

Definitley without for that type of porch. Didn't know it was called a storm porch.

SwedishEdith · 25/04/2017 20:21

everyone prefers a porch!

Depends on road as well. 80% of houses on our road have the fairly standard plastic/brick/wood porch stuck on the front - like a mini conservatory. Much as I don't particularly like them, I am loath to get rid of it as where would we store all the crap that's in there?

But those two-door, two-step in ones would really wind me up.

Hard to say. I really love my house but it was build in a big development and there are obvious places where costs have been cut. We have no porch because of a greedy developer. TBH it pisses me off. We have wellies in the kitchen (x4!). Because someone wanted more money. When kids were in buggy, I kept buggy in car due to nowhere suitable in house.

However if they house you are referring to is older, the photos you have linked to with just the one door are visually more attractive. But the ones with two doors have a place to put random shit.

nigelforgotthepassword · 26/04/2017 08:57

I like a porch.it makes life considerably easier, so I'd say if it's lot going to alter the look of the house negatively then as much porch as possible!

I would save your money if you are planning on selling in a couple of years and are not a massive fan ...Our street is similer in design and the majority of people have removed those double door porches when renovating as they are such a PITA and don't look as nice..

My friend was v keen when she moved to a house with that sort of porch but now it irritates the f out of her as gets so messy and the double doors are a pain to lock /get stuff like bikes through etc shes planning on ripping it out!
