Is a storm porch important to you?

Am currently doing up my home (slowly) as looking to sell in the next couple of years . Front doors are currently wooden . Am looking at replacing the internal front door with a rock door and possibly just removing the outer porch doors.

Would this put you off? Do people prefer porches?

Do I need to just replace both doors with UPVC?

I personally like the look of some of the houses on the street with just a single door and small covered porch but wondering what others think.

Thanks

I also prefer a storm porch, generally they look quite pretty and provide useful cover, I'm no fan of enclosed porches, they tend to be small and cluttered and not the best thing to have to walk through coats and shoes to get into the house, they also tend to be quite cold and basically just a cloak room pinned onto the front of the house.

I would always go for the house that looked more "original", ie in this case, your first picture. If the house had been built with a porch, then I would then prefer that. It depends on the age and design of the house. If you don't stray too far from what the orignal architect intended, then you can't go too far wrong.

We're about to add a US style open porch to our house (about 14 square metres). I'm quite exited about it even though it will add little in the way of useable living space. It will still be somewhere to leave boots and umbrellas etc and I'm trying to persuade DH that it needs a swing bench just like in the movies..

IAmNotAUserNumber · 25/04/2017 07:55

If you remove the outer doors is there a possibility that it will just look like a closed porch with the doors taken off than a proper open porch? In which case the open porch could look a bit rubbish. The money you spend making good the porch after removing doors might be better spent on new doors.

IAmNotAUserNumber · 25/04/2017 07:59

Also good quality wooden doors would be more attractive to be than pvc

TimeToMoveOnUp · 25/04/2017 08:05

Hate narrow double doors as you never end up opening both to get through and just squeeze through one. Get a single big door.

junglebookisthebest · 25/04/2017 08:05

A porch is good as long as it's a decent size and you can use it to dump muddy boots and coats. If it's one of those small ones with windows and no space for coat hooks I would get rid.
I am wary of them when buying houses as they are often a poorly built add on (from a dodgy double glazing company) and can have issues. I know of two that have had to be either removed or complete rebuilt.

bigredboat · 25/04/2017 08:17

My house is like the examples you posted, about ½ the houses on our road have added double doors to the open porch. It wouldn't have made a difference to me whether they were there or not when buying but I think they look a bit better without the doors.

thethoughtfox · 25/04/2017 09:56

Think just a front door looks smarter ( just bought a house with no porch though!)

You absolutely must succeed!!! I love the American verandas with the swing seats - I'd love one too but at the back

Babyiwantabump · 25/04/2017 10:52

Ooh lots of replys thank you!

The "porch" is literally tiny - two steps through to main door .

The first picture is more like my house but my house has an extra door fitted in the opening .

Have had trouble myself getting pushchairs etc through as they get wedged in between the two sets of doors.

Think I'm going to just replace the internal doors with a nice looking rock door and take off the external doors .

Thanks for all your opinions!

I would choose a porch but i live in a cold windy part of the UK!

Babyiwantabump · 25/04/2017 10:55

Half the houses on the street have added external doors and half have the original open porch - I think it was originally open anyway .

I currently have double doors on the outside which I was going to replace with new ones if I did replace them . Not two sets of single doors if that makes sense .

Better picture of what it would possibly be like with or without - not my houses just stolen off google street view!

I think a porch is only really useful if they are big enough for buggies etc so in your case it wouldn't put me off at all. I think it looks nice with just one front door. I sort of have a storm porch and the front door opens into the hallway. It's not drafty at all, modern doors are pretty snug.

Bluntness100 · 25/04/2017 11:09

I think the open one with the blue door is better. The other one will be too small and cramped to be useful.

Joinourclub · 25/04/2017 11:21

I prefer the look with only the inner door. I have two doors and it feels cluttered. I've considered removing the putter upvc door, but then I think I'd not only have to replace the inner door, but also the poorly insulated paneling/glass that surrounds it. Too much of a faff for me! So I'm just going to replace the ugly upvc wit a smarter composite door.

lazycrazyhazy · 25/04/2017 12:12

We used to live on a busy street with front door opening directly into the narrow pavement. We created a porch inside the front door, a sort of lobby with double doors which gave us an extra layer between us and the street which was good for noise, fumes, child safety and looked nice too even though it made our small hall smaller. It depends on your road I think.

PigletJohn · 25/04/2017 13:27

without looks much better.

Babyiwantabump · 25/04/2017 14:29

I think that too piglet but my dad (who thinks he is some kind of property guru) says everyone prefers a porch! So I'm just going to ignore him anyway Wink

I've had a quote of about 2k I think it was for replacing the internal door and surrounding windows with a rock door . Does that seem about right?

It's counting just over that to have patio doors , back door and 3 other windows replaced so it seemed a lot to me!

It's counting? It's coming to - bloody phone

Opens onto hallway I wouldn't be bothered about a porch. No hallway then yes a porch would be really important.

This! Plus I would add an ugly plasticky porch is worse than not having one imo.

This is a photo that the company sent me of an example of the inside view
