Tenant has changed locks, gone away and left lights on.

New tenant is two months in to a six month let (to be extended after 6 months) No issues before, although he does have a weird habit of leaving all the lights on all the time (the property we let to him is visible from our house). He has a regular job, and it's his electricity bill, but I still find it a bit odd. He has been away for at least a couple of weeks now with all the lights still on. I sent him a nice text asking him if he would mind me going in and turning the lights off (concerned about overheating / electrical problem) I waited for two days with no answer. I then went over there, thinking he may be ill, to discover he has changed the locks (as is his right) but without telling me. As the owner of the property, I feel a bit uneasy about this. Don't I have the right to a set of keys? I would never enter the property without the tenant's consent, but in the case of an emergency, there is nothing I can do without keys. Not sure what to do now re lights. Am I being overly cautious and worried over nothing? I've been letting this property for six years (two different tenants in that time) with absolutely no problems whatsoever. I have always had keys.

What was that about someone being a cunt?

I bloody love the comment about the poor bloke daring to try and stop people getting into his house. How dreadful of him. Maybe he should leave it unlocked next time so people can go in and out switching his lights on and off whenever they like. I also agree with PP- mumsnet is obsessed by cannabis farming. It's the answer to any neighbour thread.

YOU have to wonder how some people function in life don't you? How someone can type the sentence 'he's obviously trying to stop people getting in' without any sense of wrongness about their thought process...

there is never an excuse for the use of the C word

Fucking loads of excuses! Walking around, getting in my way, being cunts.

People on MN often say they don't answer the door or the phone if they don't feel like it. Other posters are generally supportive. That's not my way, but it's okay because it's your home. But next time I see one of those threads I'm going to ask the OP if she rents and suggest it could be the landlord coming round to check if the fridge door is properly closed.

The whole 'he's stopping people coming in' mentality just screams to me that he's being treated like a child because he's renting. If the situation was 'my neighbours (who own their property) have left their lights on. I have a spare key for emergencies. Should I go and turn them off?'
Everyone would be saying fuck no... Are you mad?!

I don't think anyone was ' practically bludeoning the Op over the head telling them how awful they are', they just pointed out the fact that letting yourself into someone else's home is illegal, and cunty

The Op sounds like a nice person so I'm sure she wouldn't want to be a law breaking cunt

I like the word cunt.

It's a very spot on word to describe some people and their cunty behaviour

I don't think we need an excuse for saying CUNT, do we? Or permission?

Well Narky, it seems that we do need MN police permission, along with our landlord's permission and not forgetting, our insurers. Grin

Perhaps the tenant is just complying with his insurers and is in fact still in the house with his doors locked up tight. Hmm
