White or grey paint for hallway??

Luv2chat2U · 08/12/2016 00:12

Hi all,

I am currently in the process of decorating and would really appreciate your opinions for an indecisive mind like mine. 😩

So, what do you think? White or grey paint for the hallway? and if you wouldn't mind suggesting shades/colours within these tones.

My hallway will have oak flooring and the stairs will have grey carpet, (at the moment I'm think more on the lighter side of grey carpet). Oh also just to note whatever colour paint I choose will follow through to the lounge area.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Dulux Just walnut is lovely

salsamad · 08/12/2016 00:50

We've used Duluxs Timeless Classics flat Matt in Thimblecase (grey with fawn tones) on 3 walls in our spare room. The fourth wall is painted in Pressed thistle (steel coloured dark lilac) from the same range. It looks very grown up and lovely.

Luv2chat2U · 08/12/2016 06:08

Thank you (only1scoop)I will check out just Walnut as as I've not heard of colour before that sounds lovely.

@salsamad, thank you, timeless is actually on my list......😀

originally I really wanted pure brilliant white but have done this previously and realised that depending on natural day light it can look quite dull unless you have the light switched on permanently.

Grt the washable stuff for the hall. Mine was freshly painted FB Strong White and i and is covered in little black finger marks already!

downwardfacingdog · 08/12/2016 09:35

Don't do PBW - it looks really stark and unwelcoming in a hall IMO. I would go for a warm grey. If you go to a place that does the dulux colour mixing you can have any colour made in Endurance. My friend has just walnut. It's very nice, pale, warm grey

PurpleDaisies · 08/12/2016 10:10

I agree white is really stark for a hallway.

Dulux polished pebble is really lovely. We've ended up with a pinky beige due to issues coordinating with tiles that aren't being replaced but we'd definitely have gone for that otherwise.

Only1scoop · 08/12/2016 10:54

Op we did Brilliant white and it was just too stark. I literally went through hundreds of samples and eventually came to the Just Walnut decision....The name put me off at first as I thought it would have beige undertones, however it's the softest white grey I could find without any blue tinge at all.
Good luck

SweepTheHalls · 08/12/2016 10:55

We are planning grey with white wood work

daro · 08/12/2016 15:26

I just did F&B hardwick white in the hall stairs and landing and love it. It is not white at all much more grey with a very very subtle hint of green.

PlumsGalore · 08/12/2016 15:28

Definitely not white in a hallway eeek!

I have Egyptian Cotton in mine (Dulux) and its lovely, a kind of shade of grey.

Luv2chat2U · 08/12/2016 18:53

Hi all thank you for your comments..

@shadowridge when you say washable do you mean satin, silk or something else....

I absolutely love the finish of Matt, but not how it looks a few months later😕 so I'm opting out!

..thank you all for sharing your experiences, I shall look at just walnut, Egyptian cotton, polished pebble, and F&B hardwick white(though I worry about the hint of green in the latter).

Luv2chat2U · 08/12/2016 19:12

Hi again Daro, ignore my last comment I've checked out hardwick White and the green isn't what I imagined, very nice...but maybe a little too dark.

OO - vinyl matt emulsion but washable. Johnson do one ( our local paint places mixes it in F&B colours) im sure Dulux will do one too. It will be 2x price but worth it.

Luv2chat2U · 08/12/2016 22:18

Oh thank you so much for the information i've just checked out strong white, but can't work out the colour i.e. white?? grey?? lol.

I'm defo going to seek out this vinyl matt emulsion (washable)...Many thanks...

To all who mentioned just walnut, I'm liking it......

but has anyone experienced Timeless by Dulux and if so what are your thoughts.

We had timeless in our old dining room and found it too cold so we ended up painting over it with a cream.

I'd order a load of testers. It's hard to tell what things will look like in your own home without putting it on the wall.

PurpleDaisies · 08/12/2016 22:23

Timeless is very white.

3boys3dogshelp · 08/12/2016 22:23

Another vote for dulux polished pebble (Matt). It's a pale grey.
We have oak floor, white woodwork and polished pebble walls and it looks lovely. The first time my hairdresser came over to do my hair after we decorated she stopped on her way home and bought some for her hall too!!

TheMightyMing · 08/12/2016 22:25

We have Egyptian cotton in our bedroom, kitchen diner and are just about to do the lounge in the same. I'd call it a neutral grey/beige. It's just a nice clean backdrop and we do white above the picture rail and ceiling.

skippy67 · 09/12/2016 17:06

We have Dulux Porcelain Doll in our hallway. It's a lovely light grey

Allsloppy · 09/12/2016 18:12

I have just painted my hall and lounge in dulux timeless Matt paint as I could not make my mind up and the decorator was coming after it was mentioned on here. Absolutely love it and don't find it cold. It's very modern and clean which is very different for us. Goes lovely with my oak laminate.

ginsparkles · 09/12/2016 18:15

We have just done Grey in our hallway, looks fab against white walls and wooden floors

Luv2chat2U · 10/12/2016 11:09

Wow I'm really confused now lol... But you have all been extremely helpful....

I've been deciding between just walnut and timeless.....I've checked out polished pebble but forums have mentioned a tinge of blue so that's a definite no no.....

I've also heard that timeless can have a tinge of yellow which I'm a little uncertain about.....I've just looked at a friends but I don't know if it because she has mostly while furniture but it just seemed like a lovely warm white to me.....

Anyhoo I may end up doing Just Walnut for kitchen and bedrooms , and timeless in the hallway....or just Walnut in the hallway and lounge.....

I love it.

Did my hallway and all bedrooms in it in last house.

Am doing my bedrooms in it in current house.

Probably going to do hallway above the (fake) dado rail in timeless and some kind of grey below.

I do PBW ceilings and PBW satinwood for woodwork.

Downstairs for kitchen, living room and dining room are all in BPW as a placeholder for now.

Mungobungo · 10/12/2016 12:48

I did mine last year in Dulux endurance goose down with white woodwork (not gloss, just the Matt stuff). We have walnut effect hallway floor and mid/dark blue stair carpet and it looks lovely, fresh and not too cold. Accessorised with a mix of white, dark grey, gold and wooden frames with a white hallway console table thing.
