How old were you when you bought your first home and do you wish you'd done it sooner or later?

When I bought mine I had left it longer than nearly all my friends.

We were both 23, it was bought 1 year after we both got our first full time salaried jobs as we had to save one persons salary a month for the deposit while paying rent etc which was a big strain but got through it together which made me even more sure we were doing the right thing (had only been together 6 months when moved into rented together 1.5 years when we signed for house)

I think it depends on the life you've had, we both enjoyed ourselves a lot before we settled down worth each other and so even while our friends are all still doing the same we don't feel like we're missing out as been there done that.

Also depends on the house you buy, I wouldn't rush into wrong house to get on market. Ours will fit the 4 kids we want (at a push) and could even be our forever family home, it could feel like a mistake if you have to move again in a few years after kids etc.

So young ! 30 after travelling and working abroad. 5 % deposit from parents but back then that was 3500. 74k flat with no central heating in n london on a 22k salary did it all up by hand stripping floors etc .had .dc at age 32 35 37. ...remortgaged in 2007 to buy btl next door then separated and had to sell the btl now equity has to be divided. Separation or divorce breaks the "ladder"....

29, lucky to have had a large legacy from grandparents which enabled me to buy. If it wasn't for that I'd still be renting.

I was 29 & DH was 31. It was our first chance to buy as we live in expensive area, both did long training and had no parental help.

Frazzled2207 · 27/07/2016 08:12

I was 28. Dh didn't until we bought together which was when we were 32.
Felt right at the time because by then I was in my first "long term" job and moved around a lot before then, and saved up a fair bit too.
However it turned out to be a stupid time because it was late 2006- house prices nosedived not long after that and I lost a lot of money.
We have a nice house now and I'm pleased we do but I've never got the obsession in the uk with buying asap. On the continent renting is seen as completely acceptable. Buying is so incredibly risky imo, especially if you're single which I was at the time.

I was 19 and my oh (now husband) was 28. Glad we did as wouldn't have been able to afford a family home after otherwise.

frazzled3ds · 01/08/2016 16:27

Think I was 19, bought with then partner. We went our separate ways, he gave me some money to buy me out, and I've rented ever since (I'm nearly 37, have 3 kids, divorced and not likely to be buying any time soon unless I win the lottery!!) Part of me would like to own my own place, but at the same time I have a great landlord who leaves me in peace, fixes stuff when it needs it and hasn't changed my rent in nearly 7 years :)

23, 11yrs ago now. 2yrs before housing crash, so timing was good, we were able to get a 100% mortgage.
