When I bought mine I had left it longer than nearly all my friends.

At 29. Felt like we were late to do so, but moved around a lot before then and did manage to save a good deposit.

treaclesoda · 16/07/2016 22:41

I was 23. We sort of felt forced into it as we were getting married and needed somewhere to live and we couldn't afford to rent (I know that sounds mad, but there was very little available to rent in our area, so renting was extortionate). But we needed to move within a couple of years and it was a hassle.

Lilmisskittykat · 16/07/2016 22:51

I bought at 26 on my own in 2007.

My regrets are: not waiting a year and paying peak and not stretching myself a bit more to live the same area as my family

janethegirl2 · 16/07/2016 23:00

22 and interest rates were stupid in the early 80s but I don't regret it.

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 16/07/2016 23:14

I was 31 and my first home and DHs 2nd and he was 34. 2012 in London w an eye watering mortgage. V happy there still and feel lucky we bought it when we did.

Titsdown · 17/07/2016 08:20

I have just bought my first property at 36.

Would I be quids-in of I'd bought a flat with a 105% mortgage when I was 25 and such things were possible? Yep. Do I regret it? Nope. The path that brought me here right now (not London) is pathed with awesome things: Best friends met flat sharing, years in a rented central London "bachelorette" pad, meeting DP, exploring new areas. I don't feel like I/we wasted a minute.

In the early 1990's straight out of uni DH paired up with a pal to get a mortgage on a 2 bed terrace, it was cheaper than renting, they were about 22. When they finally went their separate ways several years later they made a decent profit, and I added my name to his next property. I was about 24. We've since upgraded once more to our forever home and now at 44 should hopefully have paid it off in the next couple of years.

EarthboundMisfit · 17/07/2016 08:44

I was 26. It was right for us.

exLtEveDallas · 17/07/2016 08:50

I was 42 (DH was 47). God yes I regret not doing it sooner. I had the chance (and the money) to do it when I was 24. A row of houses opposite a hospital in my home town came on the market at the same time. My dad contacted me to say he thought I should buy one - I didn't listen to him Sad. There were concerns about the area and I was newly divorced and wanted some fun.

I bought an impractical car instead that cost me £400 a month (the same as the mortgage would have been).

5 years later the hospital expanded and ALL the houses are rented out to nurses/doctors...and have been ever since.

The car was ACE but by God I wish I'd bought the house instead. I'd be minted by now.

Diamogs · 17/07/2016 10:55

Bought in 1996 in the days when you could get a 100% mortgage with cashback - so getting paid to buy a house - unthinkable now.

I was 25 and XH was 33. I wish we had done it as soon as we could have afforded it, but if we had left it even a year later it would have been out of our reach and we would never have got on the property ladder.

Pinkheart5915 · 17/07/2016 11:01

Me 19 DH 29
It was a 2 bedroom apartment in central London, we've moved many times since and are now in our forever home

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 17/07/2016 11:05

I was 24 and so glad I did, it was in 2003 and cost 45k. Its now worth about 110k and my mortgage costs about 200.00 pcm.

noisyrice · 17/07/2016 11:12

I haven't bought a house yet but am hoping to get a mortgage with DP before I turn 21, and before he turns 25.

My parents are in their 40s and still haven't bought / got a mortgage, and I'm scared to be honest, that they won't be able to afford rent as they get increasingly older.

Jemmima · 17/07/2016 11:33

Early twenties when DH and I bought our first home. Was mid 80s.

NotCitrus · 17/07/2016 11:52

I was 26 and DP 30s. Would have been nice to do it a bit earlier but would have needed us managing to both move to same city earlier, which wasn't a priority as we never thought we could buy until a grandparent left me money (I'd been led to believe there was none left after years of care home fees, so it was a huge surprise) for a 10% deposit.

It was 2000 and everyone told us to wait for the crash. Just as well we didn't as we sold for 25% more 5 years later and only just managed to move somewhere less eX pensive and still afford a house in London.

Likeaninjanow · 17/07/2016 12:02

I bought myself a flat when I was 19. I did struggle for money at times, but I rented a room out to various strangers, some of whom became lifelong friends. It was a great experience & I made a nice profit which enabled my dh & I to take on a do-er upper later on. Couple of moves later & we have a house I never thought would be possible, while sitting on the bare chipboard floor of my first flat,

OneArt · 17/07/2016 12:05

DH and I bought together (we were engaged but not married) when I was 28 and he was 27. First time buying for both of us. That felt like about the right time.

Chloe94 · 17/07/2016 12:06

I was 18 dh was 20 :) that was 3 years ago

80sMum · 17/07/2016 12:12

I was 20 and DH was 22.

MeMySonAndl · 17/07/2016 12:25

Of those who bought in or during their early 20s, did you manage to put together a deposit or your parents/family/inheritance took care of it?

I just wonder if the claim that it is much more difficult for young people to buy a home nowadays, stem from middle aged people not having as much resources to spare to help their children to buy.

(Honestly, if my family had been willing/able to give me enough money to pay a deposit for a house, I would have bought my first house being 16 Grin)

thehousewife · 17/07/2016 12:31

24, I wish I'd done it a couple of years before as prices started to massively rise over that time.

AngelsWithFilthySouls · 17/07/2016 12:31

DH and I bought together just before we turned 22 after leaving uni in 2008. Timing wasn't ideal as we bought at the peak and are going to take a bath on it when we sell (hopefully soon) to move to our new house.

CointreauVersial · 17/07/2016 12:39

Bought first property at 23, but went back into rented at 26 after relationship breakdown.

Then back onto housing ladder with DH when I was 30.

No regrets at all; the timing was just right for me/us.

MeMySon - I saved the deposit myself for the first property, but as the deposit was £3,500 it didn't take long, tbh!! This was in 1990, and I had a good job.

Likeaninjanow · 17/07/2016 12:52

Memy - no family help. I worked from 17, stayed at home & saved really hard. No going out, no new clothes etc. Had enough for a deposit aged 19. It was just a few thousand.

alazuli · 17/07/2016 12:56

i'm 38 and planning on buying my first flat this year. i wish i'd bought earlier but i work in a low paying industry and am now only finally on a decent enough salary to get a mortgage.

really hoping the brexit uncertainty will work in my favour by lowering house prices!
