Any tips on how to add character to new build property??

Hi all

I would really appreciate some inspiration and tips on the above subject, i'm moving from my Victorian property to a new build and need to add a splash of character.....

Can period features work I.e. Coving etc

I don't think new builds suit added character features. Much better to just embrace the modernity of it all rather than attempt to recreate a period piece.

I think coving can look nice in a newer house actually.

But it would probably look weird with eg an old black cat iron fire surround/reclaimed pine internal doors.

You could add character/make it your own through adding nicer internal doors like [[http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Geneva-Internal-Oak-Veneer-Door-5-Panel-1981x762mm/p/214699 these]] with some nice handles. Quirky expensive tiles and taps in the kitchen and bathroom etc.

I'd embrace the modern begrudgingly though :)

@honey Dragon it has been built for a least 10 yrs I think and resembles a town house.....

We put those doors in a 1960 3 storey house, despite its wonderful views, people always commented on how nice the doors were, first! They look particularly good with chrome or stainless steel handles.

If your house is plain, I'd get some inspiration from the Georgian period, when houses had character but we're not over embellished. Use that as a starting point for a more modern interior.

Lovely, if it was a brand new house you'd have been disappointed as you'd have had to wait to do anything

I like coving if the ceilings are high enough.

I d embrace the period of the property you've got, not try to stick in features from another period. There are loads of lovely contemporary decorative ideas that will make your home feel like yours.

I agree that changing the internal doors can make a huge difference. Same with great lighting (both light fittings and lamps). Paint the walls in something more intesting than magnolia and have interesting furniture and it will feel like a really lovely home.

I agree with keeping it relatively contemporary. Remember the fashion for mock tudor houses and how naff that looks? You want to avoid that. But you could get away with adding a few details. I've made the mistake in the past of being too bland with colours and beiges and creams are strongly associated with new builds.
Pinterest is quite helpful in getting ideas.

Luv I meant that people comment on how great the doors are and then how great the view is! The doors are the panelled style suggested by Allfish , but are fire doors so are weightier and feel solid.

I agree with what others have said about using colour to make it your own. It sounds like you'll have some fun choosing.
