New kitchen costs

This is inspired by another thread on here. As kitchen companies are so cagey about advertising their actual prices would anyone be willing to post where they got their kitchen from within the the last couple of years, room size/number of units, how much it cost and what they think of it now it's in?

Ooh Jasper where is your kitchen from, it's lovely

JasperDamerel · 21/02/2016 20:18

It's mostly from DIY kitchens. The units are from the Carrera range, in alabaster. The worktops are Duropal laminate. The appliances were mostly from Appliances Online. I got the handles, sink and tap from other places.

ZombieHunter · 22/02/2016 20:27

10k for ours, but that includes everything:

  • units including fancy ones, such as magic corner cupboards and large pull out larder
  • appliances (oven, hob, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, fridge, freezer)
  • worktop and breakfast bar with stools
  • new floor
  • plastering of walls and ceiling beforehand
  • loads of electrics done including new fuse box
  • all labour from start to end
  • 1k alone went for a huge fishtank plus its equipment, so actually 9k for the kitchen (3rd pic shows the big empty space where the fishtank is now, it was designed around it)

Could I have had it cheaper? Possibly. But I don't care, as I love it. (and totally outing myself now by adding pictures)

Do ikea kitchens need ikea appliances

ZombieHunter · 23/02/2016 06:50

I am in Staffordshire. It's a local kitchen company, but the kitchen units themselves are Chippendale who deliver anywhere in the UK. Maybe your local supplier also deals with them?

wowfudge · 23/02/2016 07:57

Thanks Zombie. There's a supplier local to us.

@shutupandshop nope! We found it easier to go with an IKEA dishwasher because you need something to make the door fit on a non-IKEA one, but you can use any appliances (which we have done).

Thanks lime so much to think about

RaisingSteam · 24/02/2016 00:03

DIY kitchens, I think the whole lot was about 5K including fitting. No fridge or flooring in that price. Did a lot of our own painting. I think £8k would be more like it if getting it professionally done. When I priced up DIY kitchens and Ikea were about the same.

It is nothing fancy but I really like it, and the units were really solid and well made even though we made the poor fitter DH's mate do all sorts of customisations.

RaisingSteam that is a lovely kitchen. I'm looking at DIY at the moment and can't decide between j handle, slab and classic/plain shaker. Which one is yours if you don't mind me asking?

RaisingSteam · 05/03/2016 13:11

Thanks. Broadoak Sanded, we painted it all because we had that big reclaimed cupboard and bits and pieces we wanted to match, but they supply it ready painted as well. It has a slight wood grain from the oak. We have an old house and classic design just seemed to suit it more. I'm extremely unadventurous but second choice was slab door with a simple handle, German style. My mum had hers done last year with the Clayton doors which are lovely too, very smooth when painted, and they made her some custom size ones as it's one of the ranges they make rather than buy in.

langlandgirl · 06/03/2016 14:30

thanks Raising great paint job - i wouldn't risk it with my skills! I'll check them both out. Cheers

Howdens with integrated door handles so the more expensive 22mm doors - around 6m total length was circa 3k (excluding appliences) 1600 for installation in central London. IIRC Howdens prices were around 80% off list prices for each individual unit.

smellylittleorange · 06/03/2016 23:43

My friend who is a Carpenter by trade (now does project management for builders) used to fit Howdens he would charge the trade price for buying the kitchen and charge on top for fitting.

yomellamoHelly · 07/03/2016 08:28

Integrated fridge freezer, integrated dishwasher, ceramic sink and tap, 2 large base units, 1 small base unit, 2 deep pan drawers, 2 corner units, 2 large wall units, 3 small wall units, 1 corner wall unit, 2 bridging units, gas hob, extractor hood, double oven, laminate worktops, worktop lighting - for £6,900 incl VAT + £2,000 for fitting

sweetheart · 07/03/2016 13:53

We're currently in the process of having a kitchen fitted - nearly done thank goodness.

Cabinets were from Howdens who started at about £9k and I negotiated down to £5k for the following cabinets and some lighting.

fridge bridging unit
300 tall pull out larder
800 pan drawer
300 base pull out
300 cupboard
corner base cupboard
800 under sink drawer unit
200 unit with chopping boards
400 wall cupboard
corner cupboard
2 x 500 glazed cupboards
500 cupboard

island with
1000 pan drawers
500 unit with wicker baskets

We paid £2.5k for fitting

Worktops are from Wicks, laminate and with the island and 2x3m lengths cost £700

The only appliance we brought was a Rangemaster which cost £1500 and cooker hood from B&Q for £150

tap and sink were from B&Q and came to about £300

wowfudge · 07/03/2016 15:03

Thanks to those of you who have posted more recently. Helly where was your kitchen from please?

yomellamoHelly · 07/03/2016 16:21

Howdens - Tewkesbury Stone

yomellamoHelly · 07/03/2016 16:21

Burford was £1500 cheaper

madasamarchhare · 07/03/2016 16:41

What was your experience of getting howdens to drop the price? Did you have to negotiate what you actually wanted or were they reasonable at reducing the original cost? I have a galley kitchen it isn't huge
Breakfast bar
Wine fridge
Freezer
Dishwasher
Washing machine
Eye level built in oven and combi microwave.
Nothing fancy 4 walk cupboards and housing unit for the oven then a corner cupboard, pan drawer and a couple of floor cupboards and I've been quoted 11k!! Wow couldn't believe it and this was only with a laminate worktop and ordinary sink.
Am meeting with builder and howdens next week any suggestions as to how to proceed to try and get price knocked down. I have heard never to accept their first price and there's always rooms to manoeuvre but does anyone actually have experience of this?

sweetheart · 07/03/2016 16:44

We were also quoted for Tewkesbury and Burford. I had the initial design done at the branch local to my builder using his account and discount. I knew people with accounts at 2 other branches so I basically played them off against each other. I think Howdens branches are franchises so each one is owed independently rather than being part of a chain so some managers will offer bigger discounts than others.

sweetheart · 07/03/2016 16:45

I also went to various other places like Wren, Magnet, Wicks and then once I had the quotes for all of them I gave each competitor all the other quotes and got them to price match to drive the prices down.

sweetheart · 07/03/2016 16:47

And then, once you've done all that, ask for an extra discount on top - most of them will give it to you to secure the order. The only place that said no to me was Wren. Wicks gave me an extra discount for the counters I ordered. Magnet offered a discount if I placed my order within 2 days (but were still the most expensive so I declined) and Howdens also offered a one off "managers discount".
