If you want a bare plaster wall in your bathroom

How do you waterproof it?

Anyone know?

I read that you can cover it in linseed oil, but then it would make it very difficult to paint etc if you wanted to eventually.

why do you want a dust-generating wall that absorbs dirt, splashes of water and shampoo and can't be cleaned? And will leave marks on your clothes and towels when they brush against it?

You could paint it matt plaster-colour if you wanted.

Hullygully · 30/10/2015 12:18

Well if you put it like that.

Can't find a proper plaster colour.

Have it mixed?
Take a photo of the colour, take that in to any B&Q and ask them to mix up some bathroom paint for you

Hullygully · 30/10/2015 12:24

They never get it quite right ime (fussy). Also, the thing I like about plaster actual is the slight variance in colour all over.

Isn't there some super-secret moroccan oliveoil plaster thingy? Seems to involve lots of rubbing, but I think it's used in steam baths n stuff traditionally.

I wonder if something like the sealant you get for external brickwork would work? Although I think that would give it a gloss look.

ChunkyPickle · 30/10/2015 12:25

Oh - are do any of the basement tanking compounds you get transparent?

I'd grab a Wickes catalogue and take a browse through the sealant section :)

ICanSeeForMiles · 30/10/2015 12:34

My dh is a plasterer, and I've just text him to ask Grin
Apparently, PVA is your answer....I had a painted wall that marked very easily so we coated it in PVA, but to be honest I've no idea if it would waterproof it.

JeffsanArsehole · 30/10/2015 12:43

Was coming on to say pva, I've used it in my downstairs loo

Make sure you get the one that dries clear

And not buy two different ones and accidentally paint one wall with the white like I did Hmm

Hobby craft was the cheapest for me, you also thin it with water. Don't slap it on one bit like I did and then thin it Hmm

Hullygully · 30/10/2015 12:44

I was hopeful of PVA. Will it do in a bathroom then?

OP posts:
lalalonglegs · 30/10/2015 12:44

If you put pva over it, it will go darker and slightly shiny. You can get a finish called venetian plasterwork that looks like raw plaster but (I hope) is less of a liability, however it costs a fortune to have it done.

lalalonglegs · 30/10/2015 12:46

Actually, I'm not sure even venetian plasterwork would be suitable for a bathroom. Why not use your bathroom for a few days with raw plaster, see how awful it looks at the end of a week and resign yourself to paint and tiles - they're popular for a reason Grin.

PigletJohn · 30/10/2015 12:46

PVA is not waterproof. It softens when damp and comes off when wet.

It is a source of much regret when people try to paint it with a water-based paint such as emulsion.

Hiahia · 30/10/2015 12:48

Try tadelakt or béton ciré. Time consuming though so expensive.

Hullygully · 30/10/2015 13:15

DAMN what use is modern science if I can't have what I want?

Hmmmm?

HoggleHoggle · 30/10/2015 13:18

I think Farrow & Ball do a colour that is very much like plaster...I think it every time I see the colour chart, so could be worth a look?

Hullygully · 30/10/2015 13:21

Yes, I think I am nearly resigned to paint. I think they have one actually called Dried Plaster. How they must chuckle at folk such as I.

OP posts:
HoggleHoggle · 30/10/2015 13:25

I think it is called that now you mention it! How insightful for me to think it looks the colour of plaster Grin

Hullygully · 30/10/2015 13:29

You is GIFTED!

Doesn't look too much like plaster to me. It's a really depressing colour (actual dried plaster, that is)

Hullygully · 30/10/2015 18:26

depressing is in the eye of the beholder. Don't think that colour is relaly like plaster, I agree
