Ours has been a long time coming, planning permission was granted 18months ago, but our builders finally start on Tuesday.
Would be great to have some build buddies Grin

this sort of thing! or something more sophisticated?

I know a bath is better than nothing, shouldn't grumble.

Carrying on my bathroom theme...
Our downstairs bathroom was put in by the previous owners, 10 years ago according to my builder who found a date on something, anyway the only thing we could keep is the loo, it's modern in design and in fine condition, will post a picture in a sec.

I really wanted to part panel the room and get some funky wallpaper for above and I fancied this

style of sink, do you think the loo will look alright? Or too modern? Am I mad reusing something old?

Loo :)

Yeah pretty much along those lines. It's because last summer we ended up with loads of flies in the house but I don't know if that was because of the fake grass we had. Might just go for French doors, it's so hard to decide.

Can't see your wall paper karcheer

Karcheer · 17/11/2015 20:01

Haven't posted wallpaper not that far in my design yet, but maybe this kind of look...

The sink link is broken isn't it...

try again!

mad the ones I linked to, looked as if you can add afterwards don't they? So you could always try one summer and add in if you have a fly issue.

Madblondedog · 17/11/2015 21:20

I think if you wanted to you could definitely keep the loo and get that kind of sink

To me it's subtly modern

In an ideal world what would you like to do though?

GnomeDePlume · 17/11/2015 21:48

I agree with Madblondedog, it would be a nice subtle look. Not too 'in your face' modern but also not pretending to be older than it is.

Building control man came round. He didnt instantly dismiss the builder's proposal so we are hopeful. Unfortunately he went off to dither think about it.

His parting shot was that he wanted the bottom of the existing soakaway exposed and then bedded on concrete. Apparently the soakaway is too close to the corner of the extension so will need to be firmed up. Not sure how all this digging will affect the stability of the ground. What do I know? I just do the paperwork.

Madblondedog · 18/11/2015 08:47

Fingers crossed for you gnome

Those of you who have gone through the planning process, did you find that the architect pretty much new what would get through and what wouldn't? I'm nervous about putting in for planning on out next stage and not getting it as we can't afford the money wasted

Karcheer · 18/11/2015 10:17

mad yes, but i actually wish we'd tried to see if they pass something else. We will have a very complex roof structure on the extension because the architect said it should be lower than the current build, other extensions since ours was approved have been allowed this.

OP posts:
Madblondedog · 18/11/2015 11:00

OK, I will make sure I push the architect.

What we wants isn't very complex, it wouldn't need planning if our house wasn't so high compared to our garden annoyingly.

Thanks for the tips Smile

GnomeDePlume · 18/11/2015 21:03

Poop! Poop! We are back on.

The man from Building Control has given his benediction to the builder's proposal to re-route the rainwater drainage away from the soakaway.

Builder and building control man back tomorrow to decide just how much shoring up will be required for protect the foundations from the redundant soakaway.

Madblondedog · 19/11/2015 08:50

Awesome news gnome Smile

We are just getting prices for our rear extension but am a bit stumped on one thing, the extension will come off the existing kitchen to make a kitchen diner. The existing kitchen has a flat ceiling, would you a) have an extension with a vault and a sky light so the ceiling would go flat then vault up b) flat roof and continue the current line of the ceiling c) something else?

It's south facing so we don't want to have a lantern, as much as I love them I think we would overheat in there but we are planning to have windows almost all around with pillars in each corner.

What would you guys do?

Madblondedog · 19/11/2015 09:02

Going to make a new thread about that too actually Smile

GnomeDePlume · 19/11/2015 13:07

Madblondedog we are similar in that our extension will be south facing and is extending off the back of current kitchen/dining room. We have decided to go with a flat ceiling rather than a pitch. For us a big reason was being concerned about creating a very hot room in the summer then cold in the winter.

Also cost was a big factor for us. Our thinking was that with a flat ceiling we could stage the work more as DH would be able to put the ceiling boards up but then perhaps wait until we were feeling flush to have the plaster skim done.

Karcheer · 19/11/2015 14:57

Would you be able to see the current flat roof and the pitch from outside? My worry would be it might look odd. I've been told vaulted inside is expensive.

this looks nice (goes from flat to vaulted).

OP posts:
Madblondedog · 19/11/2015 15:08

Gnome Yes cost is a major factor to us, we're going to keep the existing (horrid) kitchen in place and have the extension done first, to stagger it.

Karcheer From the outside I think the pitched roof would look more appropriate as although the ceiling is flat the roof is not (I hope that made sense).

Our next door neighbour has gone flat roof and it looks OK from the outside but I think a pitched roof would be more in keeping

Madblondedog · 19/11/2015 15:10

My builder is currently singing along to Spice Girls, not sure they realise I can hear but its hilarious!

Karcheer · 19/11/2015 17:20

The block and beam floor for the carport is down woohoo!!!

gnome that is fab news for you!

karcheer yay !

Been away most of week and we are back home this evening. Cannot wait to see progress so will be out with torch tonight!!

Madblondedog · 20/11/2015 08:52

Great news Karcheer

Aesops How is your house looking after a week away?

dontcallmelen · 20/11/2015 13:28

Hi everyone, come to join in currently two weeks in on our small (2x4m) side return extension, have a wall,a lintel where the new doors will be & floor ready to be concreted.
So far so good, had a lot of faff with moving drains but that now solved builders have been excellent, even my neighbours have commented, how nice & well mannered they are.
Hope everyone's work is going well.

Marylou2 · 20/11/2015 14:55

Hey Everyone, sounds like good news all round and that you're moving along nicely. We now have lights. Yay! Really pleased with them but will probably take me a year to learn which switch controls which set as there are 8 switches.
Kitchen carcasses also came today and worktops, range and hood arriving Monday. Looking forward to having a functioning kitchen and not veering between salads (pretending to be healthy) but more often takeaways and copious amounts of wine.
Really envious of the lovely new bathrooms. Hopefully that'll be the next project but need to do some serious saving up first.

Karcheer · 20/11/2015 17:20

Today we have steps from garage to the utility room and an actual door from the kitchen to the family room albeit not the final door but hey it's still a door!
