Have subway tiles had their day What next?

Choosing tiles for the kitchen is giving me a headache. I like subway tiles, but think I may be a bit Pinterest-damaged, cause they are everywhere.

Anyone got any ideas what the next big thing in tiling will be? Don't want the kitchen to look dated in a year or two.

No, they're classic and great. You can lay them in brick pattern vertically if you want to be slightly different.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/08/2015 12:20

I love them too and I think they're classic. They do mirrored/patterned ones now in interesting porcelain textures if you want to change it up.

hotCocolepew · 16/08/2015 12:29

Nooo Shock Im saving up for them!
I don't think they would ever go out of 'fashion'

wowfudge · 16/08/2015 12:49

You can also get large format ones which look great.

cathcustard · 16/08/2015 12:55

I think the bevelled edge ones are a bit old hat but the plain rectangular are fairly classic.
Love the big format ones in a shower too.

Belleview · 16/08/2015 16:13

Pinterest fatigue has a lot to answer for. Metro tiles aren't old hat, they're classic.

MmeLindor · 16/08/2015 17:23

Sorry, didn't want to start a panic. It's probably because they are everywhere on Pinterest. I think we'd go for non-beveled edges, as they are a bit more modern looking.

Personally I'm over a brick-bond laid metro tile. It's become ubiquitous as you say and as a result it's a bit of an imaginative choice right now plus. Nothing wrong with a rectangular rile though and...Laid uniform; stack or even herringbone would look fresher IMHO.

Lelivre · 16/08/2015 20:38

Sorry baby asleep in arms as I type on my phone I had meant to say...plus I think it will date a kitchen which, having been in that situation before, is a bit annoying down the road!

Bearbehind · 16/08/2015 20:47

I think it's a real love it or hate it look.

Personally, I hate it, too reminiscent of a public convenience.

wowfudge · 16/08/2015 21:07

There are lots of interesting finishes and textures around in tiles at the moment and different shapes too. Choose something you like as you will be living with it.

MmeLindor · 16/08/2015 23:30

Wow
Not planning on moving for a while yet, but it's not our forever home. So has to be fairly neutral, in case we sell/rent in the future.

We have mosaic in the bathroom, in matt tile but DH thinks we'd be better with glossy tiles in kitchen.

I don't think it's a love it it hate it look at all, that's a response to it as if it was a novelty. I think it's classic and timeless.

Nobody complains about square tiles being ubiquitous. I think metro tiles are/will be the same. Just an alternative to square.

wowfudge · 17/08/2015 09:32

I agree Belleview. I've never seen metro tiles in a public loo - they've never been that nicely tiled! In old buildings, yes. I'm not keen on brightly coloured metro tiles, but they are not going to be like those hideous 80s brown tiles with fruit relief patterns in 20 years time!

TremoloGreen · 17/08/2015 11:16

Hexagonal tiles are the new metro Wink

Lay them in a herringbone pattern if you want to mix it up a bit?

I like them - classic - but DM is a real snob about them and when I suggested them for her new kitchen she called them 'toilet tiles' Shock

MmeLindor · 17/08/2015 12:56

I don't think I've seen them in a public loo either. Maybe I've not been in posh enough toilets!

I've been looking at hexagonal tiles - do you mean the little ones? Like this although I wouldn't do them all the way up the wall.

wowfudge · 17/08/2015 13:18

Now to me they remind me of French floor tiles and I've seen the little white ones as a toilet floor!

WitchofScots · 17/08/2015 13:22

They remind me of public conveniences as well, I'm sure they had tiles like that in older, Victorian age/style conveniences I'm showing my age now, don't send me to Gransnet please

KumiOri · 17/08/2015 13:32

no they are classic just had sage coloured ones put in as splash back
level edges ones are much easier to install the dc learned a few new words that day

Panzee · 17/08/2015 13:33

Hexagonal tiles? They sound ace! You could get blue and white ones and play Blockbusters.

TremoloGreen · 17/08/2015 13:58

Yeah, you can get little teeny ones, on a mesh back like mosaic tiles, or bigger indivdual ones

www.firedearth.com/tiles/range/hex/further-refine-by-type/porcelain-+-ceramic/page/2/mode/grid

They're on a floor though no reason you couldn't have them as wall tiles, or in one colour.

Roseandbee · 17/08/2015 14:50

I don't think they'd ever date but I like period properties & country style kitchens and so its my opinion they'll always look nice in that setting.
I think the next big thing in tiling is actually to have no tiling, might not be practical but thats how i'm seeing a lot of the newly installed kitchens done. Plus no tiles is neutral & they wont date either ;)

TremoloGreen · 17/08/2015 14:58

If I were having a new kitchen done no I do not have a Pinterest board for a project I can't remotely afford to do I would spunk most of my budget on the biggest, baddest range cooker I could afford, some sort of lovely stone worktop around the sink (island, obv) and just get some plain white metro tiles if there was any money left.

Saying that, and in response to Roseandbee, my kitchen tiles never really get dirty, the only place with any splashes is behind the hob, so I would consider just having a splashback there and worktop upstands everywhere else, with the walls painted in something wipeable.

PandaMummyofOne · 17/08/2015 15:45

DF had just redone his bathroom (again). He's put white metro tiles in Herringbone fashion. And it's bloody gorgeous. totally not thinking of spending redundancy money on having our bathroom done. Nope not me. Never.

KatoPotato · 17/08/2015 16:02

Once they start becoming the standard on 'homes under the hammer' that means they're overdone!
