Have subway tiles had their day What next?

Choosing tiles for the kitchen is giving me a headache. I like subway tiles, but think I may be a bit Pinterest-damaged, cause they are everywhere.

Anyone got any ideas what the next big thing in tiling will be? Don't want the kitchen to look dated in a year or two.

I think metro tiles were classic, but are no longer do because they've been so overdone. A bit like those old fashioned flowery girl's names that are now everywhere. Metro tiles will definitely date a kitchen in ten years time imo. I do like then though.

lalalonglegs · 18/08/2015 17:25

Yeah, but in ten years' time you'd probably retile anyway Confused.

Suzy-if money was no object I would have had sheets of that marble (or the Quartz copy) for the counter and up the walls. It's so classy and I totally see why you went for it.

I'm waiting for samples of these. Wanted something geometric and a bit mid century.

I'd wonder how dusty and mucky those would get in a kitchen with such heavy texture.

bowsaw · 19/08/2015 11:42

think about how they will look if cut and if cutting will be easy,

rented a house with nice looking tiles until it got to the cut outs, there the design fell apart and it looked nasty

Oh, good point. I quite like the really big tiles but worried about the under window bit.

I like those ones, Lelivre, but they'd be a nightmare behind the hob.

JulesJules · 19/08/2015 19:13

I'm not a fan of metro tiles, I do think they are a bit public loo. The popularity of them wouldn't bother me if I liked them though.

I'm just having my kitchen done at the moment and am going for glass splashback along the wall where the hob is (No grout, no joins, hurrah) and no tiles anywhere. The sink is in front of the window, and the worktop will have an upstand and then cover the windowsill.

And one of the new ovens is a slide and hide (your other thread) which I love so far (3 days in)

Have they had their day? God, got to hope so. I HATE them with a vengeance (public lavatory look, as others have said) and I think I would go so far as to say I wouldn't buy a house if they had them. Or at least, not unless enough was knocked off the price to cover replacing them asap.

As a previous poster said, I think that any tiles in a kitchen is starting to look a bit dated, cooker hood extractors are heading the same way.

MmeTunnocks · 19/08/2015 21:25

JulesJules
Can't wait to have the oven installed!

Stepsharp
What do you mean, cooker hood extractor? How else are you supposed to get rid of the cooking smells? Or do you mean folk will move on to the pop up extractors?

Lelivre · 19/08/2015 23:16

You're all right about those tiles being dirt traps I'm sure. I just wanted something I really liked rather than something that was sensible and practical (as has been the driving force for all the other renovations decisions boohoo)

stepsharp I had the same thought on extractors hoods. I'm thinking of getting powerful bathroom extractor for my kitchen.

I have a slide and hide oven as the oven door would foul the kitchen door, and I like it very much. The novelty is yet to wear off!

wowfudge · 20/08/2015 00:07

Lelivre I think you might have to get a kitchen extractor fan, like a bathroom one but specifically for kitchens because of it having to cope with greasy air, etc. I could be wrong, just know my parents have always had a wall mounted extractor fan in their kitchen which has been updated/replaced a couple of times over the years.

If you can have a vented extractor hood they are great as they take the greasy, smelly air out practically at source.

Lelivre · 23/08/2015 20:56

wowfudge I think you are absolutely right. I have the electrics done for one with isolator etc I just need to pick something I like and apart from the Miele £2000 one ha!
OP please let us know how the search is going any inspiration is welcome! Smile

Kitchen being installed as we speak. I think we are going for a glass splashback behind the hob, since we still haven't decided on tiles!
